CORRESPONDENCE. BaRxaay Office, Halifax, lih May, 1869. Gentlemen, — I havo now to inform you timt tlio plitns and profilon of tho survey of tlio lino of railway from Annapolis to Yarmouth aro now ready, that Mr. Schreibor has prepared a report and an approximate oatimato of tho cost of proposed line of Railway, and that tho dis- burnements made on account of this survey, Slc, amount in all to $2176.95. The plans and profiles of the survey aro now in ray office, in this city, and may be inspected at any time. I cncloso herewith copies of Mr. Sehreiber's report, approximate estimate, and statement of expenditure, the amount of which should be paid him ns soon us possible. I shall be happy to hand over the plans and profiles at any time, together with the vouchers for expenditure, which Mr. Schreibor has placed in my hands. I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, SANDFORD FLEMING. J. K. Ryerson, Esq., M.P.R, W. H. TOWNSEND, Esq., M.P.P. V Halifax, 30«A April, 1869. Deau Sir, — Early in December last, I, by yonr instructions, made a tour of tho country between Annapolis and Yarmouth, to take observations preparatory to instituting a survey of vho proposed extension of tho Windsor and Annapolis railway to Yarmouth. On ray return ta Halifax, I reported that in my opinion, the best location for tho proposed railway would be to the south of the Hessian lino and Mumford roads, east of the Tusket road, passing lake Wentworth and Geizer's lake through Hebron's corners to Yarmouth, that the coun- try was rougher than you had led me to suppose, but that I thought a fair line might be had. On the 17th of the same month you further (liroil^ted mo to orgftnizo a Htaflf of Knpfinoora mid tako tho fiold as early an possildo, alter rocoivii; a written jjiumuitfo for tho payinont «)f $'J(M)0 t()\v;inlrt (IctVayiiif; tho cxpciiMos of tho Hurvoy. On tho 20th tlie (lociimont canio to hand, I forthwith coniniencod to make tho ;ie<:essary Hrran;^einuntrt for startiiij; tho snrvcy, oxporioneing proat difliculty in Hconriin; tho sorviro« of conipotcnt usKiHtants ; however, after a little delay, I iriadc most Ratisfactory arranj;emonts, and early in January I rttartod for tho field, having as you desired, first ooni- inunicnted with tho Yariiiouth gentlemen, to ascortain what was really wanted. Tho repl}' was — " VVo want you to survey the line, where in your jiidgniont it would most benetit tho country, and bo tho least costly to build." I then explained my views, which wore approved. I therefore at oiico commenced operations on tho lino described to you after my first visit to tho district, and on tho 7tli of January, \V. G. Thompson, in charge of a party, took the fiold at Sissiboo, to operate upon tho section towards Yarmouth. On the 2l8t of tho same month, Walter 0. Bcllairs took another party into tho field at tho samo point, to make up tho section towards Annapolis. Through their energy and activity tho field work was completed ou the 24tli of the following month. Rigid economy having been exer- cised throughout in conducting tho survey, novortlioless tho expen- diture bad exceeded the amount of tho guarantee, owing to tho following reasons : — Tho lino being much longer than was anticipated, and passing through the woods tho greater part of tho distance, ana the country between Sisfliboo and Clenientsport proving very rough, lieavv, and intricate, from these various causes the time absorbed in seeking out favorable ground was mucli greater than if tho country liad been, as you wore evidently led to believe, of a level, easy character. Inasmuch however, as it appeared to bo your wish to bavo tho plans so far advanced and the profile of tho traverse plotted, BO as to niako tho drawings intelligible, I have done so, and from these tho general character of the country can bo readily under- Btood. The gradient and curvature is by no means objectionable, no grades necessarily being of greater severity than 70 feet to tho milo, and no curve of a less radius than 1000 fijot. The cost of construction would bo very moderate, and by no means oxcessivo, tho bridging being very light, and tho general character of the wotk easy. In obedience to your instructions, I have proiiarod an approximate esti- mate of tho cost of construction and equipment of the road, which, while ample and sufficient, appears very favorable and satisfactory. I now beg to hand it to you with all the plans and profiles, for tho unfinished state of which I have made explanation. For all expenses and disbursements connected with the survey, I hold vouchors amounting to $2170.95, which I now enclose, and trusting to the services performed meeting your approval, to vJ '■■.^- ■u'i :: ;„ (Signed) I am, dear sir, Yours truly, COLLTNGWOOD SCHREIBER.
