Gun Group Commander "Prepare for Action and Examine Gun." Gun Captain "Prepare for Actio!i." At "Prepare for Action" each number brings up his stores as fellows : — Gun Ijayer.— Sights, tubes, tube box, lanyard, pricker, vent service, and 6 ft. Imndspike, and for drill purposes a drill tube. Xo. 2.— Side arms and support, and a 6 ft. hand- spike. No. 3.— A 6 ft. handspike. ^ No. 4.— Elevating screw, 6 ft. handspike, and as- sists No. 2 with side arms. No. 5.-6 ft. handspike, wedge wads, and assist No. 7. No. 6.— Two cartridge cases, bucket filled and brush, and for drill purposes a drill cartridge. No. 7. — Fuzes, and fuzeimj^lements, piece of chalk, waste, and for drill purposes a drill shell, running back tackle and one or two selvagees. The stores having been brought up, they will be laid down as follows : — Gun Layer.— Receives the tubes from the shell store. He straps the tube box round his waist on right side, and lays the lanyard over the cascable, placing the loop over, and the hook through the lanyard guide. He fixes sights, taking care that the fore-sights fit cor- rcctly, and that the deflection leaves of the hind sights \york easily. He places the pricker in the loop on the side of carriage, examines the vent server and places it III the vent with the loop over one of the hind sights, and his handspike in rear of the carriage, bevel up, clear of the recoil. 2 places the side arms on right of carriage, parallel to gun, heads to the rear rammer nearest gun. In hiying the gun after loading, no elevating of the breech with handspikes, or movement of the quoin, shoidd be necessary. The quoin should be properly adjusted, half way in, also the elevating screw run down till the gun is elevated two or three degrees, when )uep;ii-ing for action. Afterwards idl elevation shouhl be done by the screw. Should any variation of elevation grcnt«r than that obtained be screw by re- quired, quoins should be re-adjusted at the command ''Wit/i hundspikcs elevate,'' when 2 and 3 apply their !iand»pikes (5 doublemans 3's). After Qach number Ins completed his work as above, he goes "under cover." The positions of the various numbers "under cover are as foUov/s.
