Original copies in printed paper covers are filmed beginning with the front cover and ending on the last page with a printed or illustrated impres- sion, or the back cover when appropriate. All other original copies are filmed beginning on the first page with a printed or illustrated impres- sion, and ending on the last page with a printed or illustrated impression. The last recorded frame on each microfiche shall contain the symbol —^ (meaning "CON- TINUED"), or the symbol V (meaning "END"), whichever applies. Maps, plates, charts, etc., may be filmed at different reduction ratios. Those too large to be entirely included in one exposure are filmed beginning in the upper left hand corner, left to right and top to bottom, as many frames as required. A N AN S W E R TO Gilbert Barkly's REPLY the ad of Novcfnber^ i7<^4- THE Public will obferve. That Gilbert B<»r,*^'s' Reply is anfwered in almoft every Point, by my former Anfwer to his firft Reprefentation to the Public, which I will not trouble the Reader with a Recapitulation of here; but Ihall beg his At- tention to the following Remarks : Firfi. If one Man will be hardy enough to fwear a Debt againft another, he can have him arreftcd, even in Pbiladelthia, till he findd Bail, which tho" I migfit have procured there, in the then Situation ot the Company's Affairs in Canada, would have probably been attended with the worft Effefts, as it would have occafioned an unavoidable Delay in my Return here, where my Prefence was Extremely nciellary. ■ — -r So much for Mr; Bar/i^s fenfible Reference to the Co«//<7>JJ'/«fl/>/f Conrtitutiorti Secondly. TheX,'240 Halifax Currency, faid to be accepted of by me in full of all Demands in the Settlement of the 2 h of OBober, 1762* can only be laid in full conditionally, viz. Providing there fhould appear no more due to me, ujion a Revifal o^all the Company's Books kept at Halifax, Louijbourg, and elfewhere, from the Beginning of our Cohcem* in Trade } ahd Mr. Borkly confirms the Clftufe in the above Settlement, by feying his Books and Compting-houfe are ftill open to me. Thirdly. I have already Imd before the Public Gilbert Barkly's unnatural Behaviour to me after his Arrival here, and given my Reafonsrfor taking my Books out of his Poffeffion; and thefe Reafons I doubt not are fatisfaftory to the Impartial: Fourthly. The Errors (or Frauds, as Gilbert Barkly ttfes tho Freedom to call them, without condefcending upon one Particular) will naturally fall to be reftified when we come to a legal Settlement. Fifthly. My complaining of Grievances in any Letters that I wrote Mr. Barkly, betwixt my leaving Philadelphia and his Arrival here, could have ferved no Manner of Purpcjfe, becaufe thofe Grievances could not be redrefled without a full Revifal of our Books from the Beginning of our Concerns; and all the Company's Books, excepting thofe that relate to our Canada Trade, were at Philadelphia. Sixthly. Gilbert Barkly, in one Paragraph of his Reply, acknowledges he gave me a Concern in Trade with him, and in a lubie^uent one abfolutely refufes the Articles of Co-partner(hip. I leave it to the Public to judge of that Contradiftion, and Ihall only obferve that Mr. Barkly is weakly and meanly leeking a Subterfuge from that fufpicious Ciicumitanceof his changing his Subfcription. Seventhly. Gilbert Barkly accounts for his making Affidavit that I was his Debitor in the Sum of j^Si 19 - i - 4 Halifax Currency, by alledging his Demand is fupported by Vouchers, viz. Bills of Exchange given Credit for, the Fate of which were unknown. Re-exchange on Bills returned. Bills of Ranfom to pay, Intereft of Money, &c. and of all thefe Thmgs Mr. Barkly has never formerly taken any Notice to me; and forgets to mention. That he is obliged by the Settlement at Philadelphia to free and relieve me from all Debts contrafted by him in the Name of the Company, except thofe mention'^d in faid Settlement. Eightly. Mr. Barkly's endeavouring to account to tiie Public for the acknowledged Faude of an Overcharge againft me of X^i 1 36 - 7 Halifax Currency at our Settlement at • Philadelphia, I freely fobmit to their Judgment, with this Obfervation, That I would be glad to DC informed, if Goods fent from one Place to another are charged at the Price they really fell at, how are the Profits arifmg therefrom to be afcertaincd.? Does not fuch a Method of charging evidently prove, beyond the Power of Quibl) ro contradict, that the Intention is to monopolize the whole, and ajllow the other Perfon (equally concerned) no Share at all ? The The Public may judge from what I have above faid, and what is contained in my for- Mr. Barkly'i printed Libel, of my prefent Situation with this moft extra- ordinary Man; and if there remains any V>o)jjk, I repeat my former Offer, to beg lliey mcr Anfwcr to Mr. Barklyi printed Libel, of my prefent Situation with this moft extra- ordinary Man; and if there remains any UoMt, 1 repeat my former Offer, to beg Uiey will take the Trouble to come to my Iloufe.^nd look at the Vouchers for what I have afleited. ,. . , I am forry that I fhould thus twice be forced to trouble the Public with my own Vm- dication in Print, but at the fame Time happy, that I can fopport whatever I have ad- vanced, and have no O
