 111 a very few day« you will be called upon to decide whether you will support a National' 
 System of Education, or allow the Romish Priesthood to destroy it. This is the great question to be' 
 decided at the Polls. You will be asked to say, in fact, whether you favor the views of Bishop Charbon- 
 nell and his fellow-priests, who claim a share of the general funds in order to enable them to teach their- 
 own peculiar dogmas, or if you prefer to support that system of Common School Education which has already ^ 
 proved 80 beneficial to the country ! - '. 
 
 Fellow-Protestants ! do not misunderstand the issue. The fatal wedge destined to rend asunder the 
 System we so much prize, has already been inserted, and the Roman Catholic Priests are driving it home 
 with all that determined energy which marked their unswening course from age to age. To your hands 
 has been committed those blood-bought privileges against which the Priesthood urge a continual and malig. 
 nant warfare ; and on your heads, and the heads of your children, will fall the fatal effects of any unfaith*^ ?1 
 fulness to your principles. , .1 
 
 Already the Priesthood have secured under their control Separate Schools in Toronto, Hamilton, 
 St. Catherines, Paris, and in Waterloo ; and in a few weeks London will witness the uprising of another 
 of these pestilential plague-spots. 
 
 The Addresses of the two Candidates, John Cabling and Eluah Leonard, inform you as to their 
 views on this matter. One of them, Mr. Cabling, professes himself to be favorable to the present unjust ^ 
 and !;aneful privileges conferred upon the Roman Catholic portion of the community, which enables them, * 
 and them alone, to erect Separate Schools, to be relieved from any contribution to the Common School Tax, 
 while, at the same time, they are paid large sums of mone by the Legislature. On the other hand, Mr. 
 LEONAno declares himself an opponent to the establishment of Separate Schools under authority of the 
 Legislature, and contributed to by the general public. He professes himself in favor of supporting a 
 National Systt^m of Education, by which means every child in the country would receive an efficient and 
 unsecturian education. 
 
 You, Electors ! have to make your choice. You will decide by your verdict at the Polls if you j 
 prefer a miserable system of Sectarian Education, conceived in a spirit of intolerance, and resulting in 
 ridiculous inefficiency, to a grand National Code of Education, embracing within its influence the entire T 
 youth of this young nation. To you is committed the task of introducing law3 which shall affect future 
 generations. You are to say if those laws shall foster bigotry and intolerance ; if those laws shall confer 
 especial favors upon a clamorous few ; if those laws shall be carried out to the detriment of the majority 
 for the benefit of a minority. You have to declare as between liberal and enlightened education, which 
 tends to blend mankind in one, and that narrow-minded course of instruction which has its base in narrow 
 prejudices, and which arrays class against class, even in childhood. 
 
 You cannot hesitate on which side to range yourselves ! Choose Mr. Lbonabo, the opponent of 
 Separate Schools, as your Representative in Parliament, and thus take a bold and uncompromising stand 
 against the insidious inroads of Poperj-.
