TORONTO: WILLIAM BRIGGS Montreal: C. W. Coates. Halifax: S. F, Huestis. 1896. Lrv^ve.s.ta^ ^^ Entered, according: to Act of the Parliament of Canada, in the year one thousand eight hundred and ninety -six, by Fanny Bate, at the Department of Agriculture. \2U INTRODUCTION After preparing this book for the press, the compiler's attention was drawn to one of a somewhat similar nature, with an intro- duction by the Archbishop of York, from which the following beautiful words are taken, and are inserted here with the kind permission of his Grace : ' ' We are too unmindful of the blessed dead. We live too little in their fellowship. W^e forget that they are still members of the one body, although hidden from us by the veil of death : brothers and sisters in the family of God ; although they have passed into the inner chamber of our Father's home. They are not dead. They are more truly living than ourselves : for they have laid aside all that is mortal, and they are now all life. They walk before the Lord in the * true land of the living. ' " Their departure from us is only another and a higher regeneration. The day of their death is a JntroOuction. ct of this littlf; book is to keop alive, more especially in the fanuly circle, the iiK'Hiory and the inlluence of the blessed departt?d : to associate these memories with thankfulness and hope, and in some measure to bury our sorrow in their joy. Each month is introduced with Scripture reminders, as lielps to a Jioly life. The bhmk pages are for the registration of the names of loved ones opposite the date of their death, and words of comfort from Holy Scripture. O child of sorrow, be it thine to know That Scripture only is the cure of woe ! Thut field of promise, how it flings abroad Its perfume o'er the Christian's thorny road ! The soul, reposing on assur'd ])elief, Feels herself happy amidst all her grief, Forgets her hdx)ur as she toils along, \V^eeps tears of joy and Ijuists into a song. — Cow PER.
