Am th« Cornel )iat now (October, 1886,) ieached4,(i nrarcit puint ofnp" j^roacli to thr erirllit and if hurryini; oflf townnJe the Sun, wo think that lome fHeti in relation 10 it, (culled from foreign journala,) might not be uninteresting. ^ The early history of this remarkable body nay be traced* with some degree of probability, as far back as 130 veara before Uie Christian era, when a comet is said to have appeared of cen- siderable magnitude and briUinncy, shining with a brightness which surpassed the iplendour of thnsunr it was supposed to have signalised the birth of Mithridates. — There is reason to bel ieve a lso that the comets which were seen in the years 223 iMid 899^, wePI||llurns ef the same body; in the latter year' it is also described of prodigious mngnitude and horrid aspect. In the years 630, 856, 990, and 1006, it probably was again obserTed ; the latter year described as four times as large as the planet Veniw. It was also visible in 1230, 130^, and 1380; at the second of these returns it was termed ** eometa hortndat magnitu^i" fijf ;" whence U may Ije concluded that its aspect was very conspicuous. In the year 1456 the Comet returned again, and was beheld by all Enrope with fear and astonishment.^ The Turks were then engaged in « suqceisiul war, in which they* destroyed the Greek Empire; they, tiiwrefore, might have regarded it as an auspicions omen. The Chris- tians thought that their destruction was portended by its appearance, espeoially as i4s tail was turned towards the east. The Pope Caliaus regarded it as at once the sign and instrument of Divine wrath ; he ordered public prayers to be onfered up, and granted » gear's indulgence ,|ef all who, rtt the tolling, of the noon-bell, should say three paternosters and three ave-marias, to (Propitiate the mercy of Heaven. In the year I5P1, it appeared of a bright gold coloof. In 1607 it pur* sued nearly the same ap|mrent path tbrough> ihe lieavens which it is new pvrsuiRg.— The celebrated Kepler observed it on his return from a con- vivial party on the 26ih September. I^ continued visible about five w e eks . (Subsequent to its return in 1688^ the laienlien ef tlie> celebra- ted Mtronomer Halleyi^ wae directed to the periodical return of these bfHfleSy ftttd from a comparison of the elements of various comets on re- diird, ht ventured to assert, that those which appeared in the y0ar8 al- -rwdy Bpecified vrere not different comets, but the same body returning at intervals of seventy«ffve and a half years. At that time, he also l>fedicted that the same eoraet would again make its appearance about tbe end of the year 1758, or the cbmmencement of 1759. The predic- tion was verified. U was first seen by George Palitzch, a farmer, near Dreeden, on Chriatmaa day, 1768| and wae afterwards recognised by several Eurdpwn olMervateries. • The eonspletion ef anothiHrjBeriod efeevenfy-five years has just arrived. a4d a secoad ferifieatiaa ef Ha)lev*e prediction has been accomplished, 'I'hrough what aaisMiglnable reafeu of epace maet ikie body have tra- velled daring that pmod t What migkt]^ assoaialions are cortnected with lie history t It is the^eaene CoiMMvbich in ages back *< perplexed ■Mmarebi,'* and m the imagimuioaB of the people, «« From ite horrid ha ir» .
