PRINTED AT THE OFFICE OF THE ANGLO-SAXON, 127 Sparks Street. - • . - Ottawa. c PREFACE. We present the first issue of The Business Directory op the Sons of Jl:^GLAND to the members. It has been suggested that we should include in the Dire:tory all the lodges in the Ottawa Valley, and with that end in view we will arrange to meet the views expressed in the next issue. With the publication of the Directory it was thought advisable to give a brief biographical sketch of the Presidents of the lodges, and where it has been practicable at the short time at our disposal, we have done so In so'iciting advertisements we thank the brethren who have so heartily responded, and we trust the brethren will appreciate the re- sponse by purchasing as far as it is possible from our own members. The objects of the Directory is to bring the members into closer touch with each other, fraternally, nationally and socially. Our num- bers-from a national p int of view-justify a closer uuicn oi LhougLt for national aggr<;s8iveness Ottawa January, 1898. B 4 .t Wo have so often been {ipproai lied with tlic remark— both in the lodge room and outside— that the fie'd wcl.ad to work ii» in Ike east uas limited. To plaec ourselves, jind conviuec the niemlurs that the ma- tjiiil was plentiful, we consulted the Cen>ns of 1S9I. compiled by the Dominion Statistician, Mr. Geoige Johnson. It, su^es: '* In the County of Carleton there were accorriing to the Census of 1891, 935 persons who were born in Knghuid. In the Cit> of Ottawa there were 1,952 persons so born, and in the County of Russell th< re were 624 persons so born. "Th're were in 1891 in the County of Cnrleton 1,950 persons whose fathers were born in England and 1,519 whose mothers were born in Kng- land. In Ottawa City there 1,387 pcr.-ons whost; fat h< rs were born in E »gl md and 3.518 persons whose mothers were fo born. In Kusstll County in 1891 there were 1,413 persons whose fathers were born in Eng- land and 1,050 whos-e mothers were born there." According to tho letter, and we must take that as the spit if of the Constitution, which interprets that the male offspring of cither parent is el gible to become members of our Order. whi( h givts us pra- tically in the City of Ottawa 7,905 of an English population. There ha«? passed through the various Ottawa lodges, f-inco tie in- auguration of the Order home 12 years ago, about 7(0 members, to day there are only about .370 active nu mbers in the lodges of Ottawa. With a little more effort and a better understanding of the full aims of the in- stitution the membership could be mnde to total up several hundred more membera. Let the motto be '" Advance." PLACE NAMES OF LODGES. In looking over the names of lodges we cannot but help asking the question what caused a lodge to be given such and such a name, and find that it invariably occurs that the lodge is named atter some prominent statesman, county or city in England. DERBY LODGE. Derby Lodgfe, No. 30, was named after Lord Derby, on the suggestion, we believe, of Bro. Croft Hulme, P.S.G.P., of Believille, Ont., who came to Ottawa some 12 years ago open the lodge, the members being at a loss what to name the lodge, the suggestion was acted upon and Derby lodge has proved to be worthy the efforts of the' members who have joined the Order under the name of one of Eng- land's greatest statesmen. BOWOOD LODGE. Bowood Lodge, No. 44, is called after the county seat of the Marquis of Lansdowne, in Wiltshire, England, who was Governor-General of Canada in the Jubilee year of 1887. A large percentage of the charter members of Bo- wood lodge were from Wiltshire, and at a preliminary meeting held prior to the formation it was suggested that Bowood be the name, it was duly decided that it shou d be so, in honor of the then Marquis, who was Governor- General of Canada at that time. It is gratifying to the membei'S of Bowood lodge that the Marquis of Lans- downe is at the present time England's War Minister in Lord Salisbury's cabinet. On his lordship learning that Bowood lodge was named after his family seat in Wilts, he sent an invitation — through the then President, R. .T. Wicksteed, LL.D. — to the members to attend an '*At Home," at Rideau Hall, at which a large number of the brethren attended. \% I v> %*. 4 i STANLEY LODGE. Stanley lodf^e is another name familiar both to Cana- dians and English history. Our late Governor-General Lord Stanley was then ruling in Canada, and it was decided that the lodge should carry his name. Stanley lodge is doing a good steady woik, pushing slowly but surely to the front, impressing all that it has its roots deeply planted and will ever hold and cherish its representative name. RUSSELL LODGE. Russell Lodge is called after that famous English states- man Lord Russell, it also is holding its own and convincing others that it is planted firmly and growingas healthy as the old English oak does. The locality is practically a sub- urb of Ottawa, and before the annexation, of what was known as New Edinburgh, it was a municipality of the County of Russell, a name having the same rererence to the same noble person as the lodge — Lord Russell. queen's own lodge. Queen's Own Lodge, No. 236, was opened on Feb. 23rd, 1897. The object in giving the name of Queen's Own was a suggestion by the Chaplain, Rev. H. I. Horsey, it being the Jubilee Year he held it would be in keeping with the cele- Ijration that was about to take place throughout the Em- pire. The idea was acted upon, and the name is destined to be a lasting one among the names in the registry of tde Sons of England. The City of Ottawa has a District Council presided over by Bro. S. J. Davis, D.D., the secretary is Bro, Jos. Berry. The Council meets monthly. The Daughtersof England is also flourishing. It is com- posed of wives and daughters of members of the S. O. E. Lodge Ivy is making very substantial progress. f Bro. Aid. Samuel J. Davis, District Deputy, Ottawa. It is with much pleasure we ^ive a bru»f sketch of Bro. Aid. Samuel J. Davis, the worthy district deputy of the Sons of Engrland, he is the youngest son of the late Wm. . Davis, builder, he was born in the Isle of Wight, 1849, sho»tly after his parents removed to Southaiupton. He was t^duca^ed at Poplar House Av,ctdemy, he left Southamp- ton for Canada in 1870, and with the excr-ption of several extended trips through the United States and many visits to Old England has resided ever since in Ottawa. Bro. Davis joined Bowood lodge some five years ago, ano has filled many offices in the lodge, including that of Presit*ent, be was delegate to Brant ford last year, he is also delegate to St. Catharines. Bro. Davis is an extensive holder of the (capital's real estate, and a large builder, some of the best residences of Ottawa are monuments to tiis skill. Bro. Davis is very popular as a citizen of Ottawa. n ►• 4 I 4 ■t Derby Codge Do. ^o. Meets 2nd and 4th Tuesday at Victoria Hall, Queen Street OFFICE RS • W. R. Stkoud, P.S.G.P.. /'/T.9. John ITuxt. The above named lodge was established by that well- known Ottawa Valley representative— Bro. Ed. Ac- kroyd— who it can be said was the foremost of all or- ganizers that Ottawa has had. Tenryson— a name familiar to Englishmen, was well chosen, at the time of opening the lodge the poet laureate was laying on a bed of sickness, which proved fatal, and the sympathy of the English people throughout the world were turned to one who had handed down some of the most stirring national inspirations which have thrilled the English mind. Lodge Tennyson, Hull, P.Q , is named after England's greatest poet— Lord Tennyson. m fe Jos. H. mm. ^461^ SPARKS STREET, - OTTAWA. Sole Agent for Latest CALMAPH & REI-SHO TYPEWRITERS.
