TIME FOR GOING THROUGH THE FALLS. • ' NEAR THE CITY OF SAINT JOHN. Tike Fall.s are level or still water at about three and a half hours bn lluijlood, and about two and a half on the ebb, so that they are passable four times, in twenty four hours, about ten or fifteen mi- iiites each time. No other rule can be given, as much depends oa llhe floods in the River Saint John, and the time of high water or JTull eea, which is often ha^ttened by high winds, and in proportion to the height of them. : 1> f 1 »«W— WHf ^ > ". The nearer the time of the moon's chanee. first qaarter, fiill and last quarter, are to midnight, the fairer will the wea| ther be during the seven days following. 2. The space for this calculation occupies from ten at night till two next morning. 3. The nearer to midday or noon, the phases of the moon happen, the more foul or wet weather may be expected during the next seven days. 4. The space for this calculation occupies from ten in the fore- noon to two in the a^ernooni The^e observations risfer principally to the summer, though th^y alTect sprijng and autumn nearly in the same ratio. 5. The moon's change, first qntgrter, full and last quarter, happen ine durJng.six of* the afternoon hours, i. e. from four to ten, may be followed by fair weather; but this, is mostly dependent on the wiwl, OB is noted in the table. 6. Though the weather, from a variety of irregular canses, is more anoertain in the latter part of autumn, the whole of winter, and the beginning of spring, yet, in the main, the above obseryatiuhs will apply to those periods also. 7. Tlie egg is iinmedi- j at«ly hatched hy the warmth and moisture of the tongue, and the j little worm conveyed into the mouth, whence it crawls down the j oeaphagus into thn stonineh. It adheres, to the cuticular coat of the ' stomach hv means of little hooks, with which its mouth is furnish- 1 ed ; and tfiere it remains from the summer of one year to the spring I of the next, nourished by the mucus of the stomach, or the food ! which it contains. Then having attained its full size as a maggot, it loosens its hold, and is carried along the intestines with the other contents of the stomach, and evacuated with the faecus. Before it drops, it generally clings for a while to the verge of the anus, and tickles and teases the horse to a very great degree. Except they exist in most untisiinl numhers, bots do neither good nor harm du- ling their residence in the stomach of the horse. It is the habita- • tion which nature has assigned to them ; and the safety of so no- ble an animal as the horse would not have been compromised for the sake of a maggot and a fly. The best advice that can be given therefore is to let tiiem alone, orat most to be content with picking i them off when they appear under the tail. There arc two good I reasons f(Sr this. The first is, that there is not any medicine that ; will expel them ; the strongest and intoat dangerous purgative is insufficient. The second reason is, that if the bots are lo^ ulone they will, in due time come all away without our help or meddling. Green food however expels them reu'Jily, as does common salt in the proportion of two to four ounces to a quart of water. The most pimple and efficient remedy is a quart of miik, mixed well with a quarter of a pound of honey or brown sugar, given fasting, This is much better than aloes. The following are stated to be the symp- toms shewn by the horse when he is much infested by these in- sects. He loses flesh, coughs, eats sparingly, and bites his sides ; at length he has a discharge from his nose; and these .symptoms are followed by a stiffness of his legs and neck, staggering, diffi- culty in breathing, convulsions, and death. The preventive means are very simple, consisting only iu scraping off the eggs or nits of the fly every day. Farm Accounts. — Let any farmer make the experiment of keeping accounts and he will find it both interesting and useful to know from year to year the actual products of his farm Let every thing theretore which can be weighed and measured be so tested ; And let that which cannot be brought to an exact standard be esti- mated as if he himself wore about to s«ll or to purchase it. Let him likewise, as near as possible, measure the ground which he blants, the quantity of rfeed which he uses, and the manuie which he applies. The labour of doing this is nothing compared with the satisfaction of having doi^ it, and the benefits which must arrive from it. Conjecluie, in these cases, is perfectly wild and uncer- tain, varying often, with riih.rent individuals, almost 100 per cent. Salt as a Manure. — Wc know that plants require for their sustenance and growth a certain supply of each of the constituents of common salt, which supply in general they must obtain from the soil. If the soil in any field contain naturally a suflicicnt quantity of common salt, chlorine and soda in any other state of combination, it will be unnecessary to add this substance; or, if added, it will riroducc no beneficial efiect. If on the other hand the soil contain ittio, and has no natural source of supply, the addition of salt may cause a considerable increase in the crop. Now there are certain localities in which we can say befurehand that common salt is likely to be abundant in the soil. Such are the lands that lie along the sea coasts, or which are expo;?ed to the action of prevailing winds. Over such districts the spray of the sea is constantly borne by the winds high in the air, from which it des- cends afterward in the rains. The application of common salt is most likely to be beneficial in districts which are renioto from the sea, or are sheltered from the prevailing sea winds. This consi- deration, it may be hoped, will induce many practical men. to pro- ceed with.mqre confidonqe in making. trial of its effects on inland situations. Some plants are mgre likely to bcbonefittcd by the application of common salt than others Observations are still wanting to show which of our cultivated crops is most favored ,by it. Some crops may delight more in salt than others ; and if weco.i8idor how much alkaline, fijted salt, mutter is contained in the top and bulbs of the potato and tiiraip, wc aro almost justified in concluding that generally salt will benefit green crops more than crops of grain, and that it will promote more the doveropment of the leaf and stem than the filling of the car. If this be so, we can re.idily understand how a soil may already ooHtain abundance of salt to supply the wants of one crop, and yet too little to meet the demands of another. To 8AVE Oats in Feeding Horses. — Bruise or crush your oats in a nut mill, or otherwise, as convenient, and the horse will become fatter on half the usual allowance, than on double the quantity unprepared. If you cannot bruise the oats, pour hot wa- ter on them, and let them soak lor a few houra. To Find the Weight op Cattli. — Take the girth behind the shoulder, and the length from the fore part of the shoulder-blade to the buttock, both in feet. Multiply the square of the girth by 4 tiin^s the length, and divide by 21 ; the quotient is the weight, nearly of the four quarters, in Atones of 16 lb., each lb. 17^ ounces avoirdupoi.s. Never keep your cattle short: — few farmers can afford it. It boils, broils, and bakes well, and I would not part with it for double its cost if I could not get another of the same pattern. M. NUGENT. Saint John, N. B. I purchased of Mr. T. C. Sir, — I beg to inform you that the inhabitants of this Island especially those who cannot afford to employ medical gentlemen, are very anxious of having your astonishing Medicines within their reach, from the immense benefits some of them have derived from their use, as they have been found here, in several cases, to cure Sores and ulcers of the most malignant and desperate kind. One gentleman in this Island, who had, I believe, about fifty running ulcers about his legs, arms, and body, who had tried all other Medicines before the arrival of yours, but all of which did him no good ; but yours cured him in about six weeks, and he is now, by their means alone, quite restored to health and vigour.
