The Treasurers statement just read shows the Receipts and Expenditures during the year. All things considered the year has not been an unprosperous one. Commencing with a deficit of $371.68 we have been enabled to make some very necessary repairs and close the year with a deficit of only $72.94. The amount raised for church purposes was .^2,126.57. as compared with 12,076.90 in 18S3, and $2,158.40 in 1882. At the same time the church has given more to the different denominational objects than lor some time past, the figMfPS being $1,068.79 in 1884. Si.064.95 in 1883 and $9^5-35 i" '882. The Committee was extremely anxious to close the year with a clean sheet, and had all the pew rents been paid promptly, could have done so, as there is more than enough outstanding to have paid all claims against us. As to the wisdom of the change in the mode of raising funds from the offering to the rental system the committee are not prepared to advise. The exceptional circum- stances of the year just closed prevent any comparison with former years, but we are of the opinion that the rental system has worked better than the offering system would have done had the latter been in force. A pastorless church is a wandering church, and consequently a slack paying church, especially under the offering system. In such times it is better to tax the pews than the mem- bers, as the former are always in their places. A number of our members have advised us of their preferance for the former method, but we believe that the present plan is working well at present, and should not be interfered with under the existing state of cliurch mauers. The amount of work in connection with the finances of the church is so great that the committe felt justified in engaging the services of a competent party to look alter the accounts. Such a one they found in Hro. James Cox, and accordingly the books were handed over to him and the result has been quite satistac. tory. ' We have made very considerable changes in the musical service of the church The improvement in this respect is too > noticableto need comment, but it has not been effected without some extra expense. We trust this will meet with your approval. Through the liberality of two of the members of the church we have been enabled to engage a leading voice for the choir. A change of some kind is needed in the Hymn and luue Books at present in use, and the matter will be brought before you at once. Repairs to the amount ot $ioo have been made, but more are needed, and the new Committee you elect will have to raise a con- siderable sum ior this object during the coming year.
