 TRENT VALLEY CANAL.

Till! valloy of the Saskatchewan ia
the point to which the Old World is
now looking as the source of its future
food supply. It is as certain as any-
thing in this world can be that the
industrial population of Kuropc in an-
other „'cneration will have to bo fed
witl' food raised in the Canadian North-
West. Therefore it becomes of the
most vital importance that the cheapest
{.ossihle means should be adopted for
 tran^pol<■ll^: wheat from the Saskatche-
wan to Liverpool. It is ctiually im-
portant that every available route should
be utilized without delay. This being
the position the project now under con-
dideration, for eoii.structing a canal from
(Georgian Bay to the St. Lawrence,
is becoming of the deepest interest, and
ehouhl bo received with great favour
 alike by Liverpool, Quebec, Montreal,
Ontario, .Manitoba, and the North West.
The construction of the canal shortens
t'. distance between Sault 8t. Marie
Bod .^lontreal by :250 milei, and furnishes
the cheapest of all means of transport
for the produce of the Nei;th West on
11 considerable porlion of the distance
to be traversed. The Canal leaves tho
Georgian Hay, either at the Severn
Harbour, or at the mouth of the Not-
tawasaga, and following a splendid chain
of small lakes, eoonccted by short rivers,
runs info the IJay of Qjinle at the
head of the St. Lawrence. When this
Canal is opened the wheat of the North
West will be carried by the I'acitic
Railway to Thunder Bay on Lake
 Superior. Kroin thence large propellers
will convey it to (ieorgian Bay. There
it will 111' put into the Trent Valley
Canal barges, carrying 500 tons each,
or l.),00tl bu.shels of wheat, and 20 of
these barges will be towed in a string
direct to Montreal, parsing 'hrough the
Trent A'alley Canal and down the St.
Lawrence. No large lake to traverse,
no danger of wreck, no expense beyond
that of the wages of one man to c^:'.
barge to steer it. At Montreal largo
ocean bonie ves.sels, or Allen's steam
ships, convey it to Liverpool. Can any
means be found cheaper than ttiis for
the trau.sport of grain? This journal
is not an admirer of Sir Charles
Tupper. WT can it forget that Sir John
 Macdonald has certain idiosyncrasies of
character and peculiar views on the
subject of Chartei-s, but we are bound
 to acknowledge that the (Jovernment
which Sir .Tohn leads, and the Depart-
ment of which Sir Charles is the head,
has shown a brond and statesmanlike
capacity in dealing with this subject
of the North West, and the means of
 transporting its pioduce, which contrasts
most favourably with that of their pre-
dcci'ssors, .vho, however honest they may
have been, never succeeded in projecting
their vision a pimple's length beyond
the end of their noses. Tho public move-
ment in favour of the construction of
tho Trent Valley Canal now in progress,
may have tho most important influence
on tho future of the North West, inas-
much as it will provide another, and
cheap means, of transporting the bread
stuffs of tl)' great wheat belt of tho
wcft, to the hungering workmen of tho
 industrial nations of Europe.
