Meeting of Board of Trustees. — A committee, consist- ing of Messrs. iiobertson, McFadden, Barbour, and ^Vhimster, was appointed to draw up a document expressive of the high opinion the Board entertains of Mr. McLellan's ability as a Grammar School teacher, and the regret they feel in parting with him ; the same to be signed by the Chairman. The follow- ing is the document referred to, and which has been handed to us for publication : " This is to certify that James A. McLel- lan, Esq., M. A., has hJd the position of teacher in oar Town during the greater part of the last six years; and sirce the estab- lishment of our Grammar School, in 18G1, he has been Gram- mar School Master, and Principal o^ our Union School, during which time he has given the utmost satisfaction. Although the high standing which our school has attained under his manage- ment, of itself speaks volumes as to his eminent ability a? an instructor of youth, we would add that he is not only highly popular here, but throughout this section of Western Canada is 8 LETTERS AND CERTIFICATES. held in high estimatioi: by all those who watch with interest the educational advancement of this Province. We need hardly- state that it is with the greatest reluctance wc part with Mr. McLellan. He carries with him our highest esteem and sincere well-wishes. We hope he may long be spared in his sphere of usefulness, and that the eminent success which has hitherto char- acterized his labours may attend him in whatever situation it may please Divine Providence to place him. D. A. Robertson, Chairman. From the Yarmouth (M. S.) Herald, 22dJuhj, 1865. Educational. — Thursday and Friday of last week were occupied in an examination of the different Departments of the Yarmouth Seminary. The attendance of visitors during both days was such as to show that the community generally are be- coming more and more interested in the cause of education. We are also happy to be able to say that the visitors were well pleased with the manner in which the pupils answered the ques- tions proposed to them. The examination in all the Depart- ments was of such a nature as to test the real attainments of the pupils Our time was devoted to the High School, and particularly to the room occupied by the classes under the imme- diate superintendence of the Principal, Mr. McLellan. And though we are aware that the exercises in the Primary and Grammar School Departments are more generally interestinf^ than "Exponential Theorems and Logarithms," or the "So- lution of Triangles," or " Latin Orations," or " Greek History," we felt it both a duty and a privilege to sit and listen to the ex- amination of the students in these branches. Principal McLel- lan is evidenly at home in the branches of study just named. He is also on earnest and eirective teacher. His aim is to teach his pupils to think, and at the same time so to direct their thoughts that all mental effort shall be expended to the best ud- vantage. We do not intend to in^^titute any comparison between the " High School " in Yarmouth, and the various collegiate » f 1. 1 iMili LETTERS AND CERTIFICATES. 9 I institutions in other parts of the Province ; but this much we will say, that iiaving examined with considerable care the " Cir- cular " issued six months ago, setting forth the course of study to be pursued, we were prepared to expect that students attend- ing this Seminary would rank with those of the same "year" attending colleges in this Province or in other places : and so far we are not mistaken. The students have completed the sec- ond term of the " first year," and they have passed a very credi- table examination in Latin, Greek, French, English, Euclid. Algebra, History, &c. ; and with another terra as well employed as the two 'ast, they cannot fail to come out on a level with stu- dents (of one year's standing) attending other collegiate insti- tutions. Judging from report, we also feel warranted in recom- mending the Female Department, which is under the immediate management of Miss Lane, as one of the best Female Seminaries in the Province. The evening of the second day was taken up with music and recitations. On that occasion, the large hall of the Seminary was crowded to its utmost capacity by a delighted audience; and the students, male and female, acquitted themselves in such way as to reflect credit on the i istitution with which they are connected. j> » r 10 TESTIMONIALS. TESTIMONIALS FROM EMINENT SCHOLARS AND EDUCATORS. From T. J. Robertson, M. A., Principal Upper Canada Normal School. Normal School, 11th January, 1858. My Dear Sir,—! am in receipt of your letter of the 5th inst., stating your intention of applying for the office of Super- intendent of Schools. On this subject I take the o .portunity of stating that, in general, none but a skilful teacher can inspect a school effectively, because he ought to be prepared to examine every class according to some recognized system of teaching : he should also be capable of organizing a school, and of advising a teacher in difficulties, &c., &c. A merely well educated gen- tleman can rarely do this, any more than I can take charge of the School of Anatomy. Hence I have always been of ophiion that the office of Superintendent should be the reward of supe- rior teachers, and should be made worth their acceptance. I have every confidence in your being able to discharge the duties of that office, and have great pleasure in recommending you for '^' I remain, my dear sir, yours very truly, Tnos. J. Robertson, M. Coll., Toronto. University College, 4th Aug. 1864. My Dear Sir, — It gives me great pleasure to state, for the information of any person whom it may concern, that you at- tended my lectures in ethics, metaphysics, &c., during the whole of the session 1861-2 ; and, that at your final examination be- fore the University, besides the other honors you obtained, you goineH first class honors, enming you to a medal in logic, ethics, metaphysics, and civil polity. Any person acquainted with these subjects, and with the books required by the University to be read in order to obtain this medal, and with the nature of the examination itself, will be sensible that the study of the works required a previous preparation, which must have enlarged and strengthened the mind, besides an amount of application and thought in preparing for the examination itself, which will add to these effects, and which, especially, when united with the otlier subjects in which you obtained honors, would tend to ren- der the person who has pursued this course of study a man of of superior information, and a highly qualified instructor. With my best wishes for your success in the arduoas profession of teaching. I remain, dear sir. Yours faithfully, James Beavan, D. D., Professor of Mecaphybics, Ethics, and Civ. Pol.,Uuiv. A., Teacher, attained a very high standing as a student of the Provincial Normal School, of which I was at that time one of the masters, and he has since been one m Si 12 TESTIMONIALS. of our most successful teachers. When last, as Inspector, I visited the St. Mary's Grammar School, in 1862, of which he was then head master, I was highly pleased with the order and activity everywhere manitested, and with the progress and proficiency of the scholars during the year, Mr. McLellan is, in my opinion, well qualified, by naturnl endowments, scholastic ottamments, and personal experience, efficiently to conduct any grammar school in the Province; and his character, so far as known to me, is above reproach. I can most heartily commend him to any Board of Trustees who may require his services ; and most heartily do I wish him suc- cess in the profession to which he has devoted himself, and for which he seems so admirably adapted. WxM. Ormiston. From Professor Rohertson, Principal U. C. Normal School. This is to certify, that J. A. McLellan, M. A., at present Principal of St. Mary's Union School, attended the Normal School for Upper Canada, and obtained the highest certificate the institution could award. During his attendance on lectures, Mr. McLellan exhibited great assiduity, zeal, and ability as a student, and in every respect merited my warmest approbation. Mr. McLellan has since been engaged, for several years past, in the profession of teaching, and has throughout been very suc- cessful, manifesting, invariably, earnest zeal, and great efficien- cy, and always obtaining the fullest confidence of his employers. Since leaving this institution, he has graduated in the Univers- ity of Toronto, and taken his degree of Master of Arts ; he has also obtained many honors and scholarships, in various branches, and completed his course with great credit to himself. Mr Dear Sir, —It has given me great pleasure to learn that you have been appointed Principal of so important an institu- tion as the Yarmouth Seminary. I have been glancing through the class-lists of the Uni versity with an eye to your performances ; and I find, that in every year of your undergraduate course, you took high honors m different subjects, especially mathematics. At the final ex aminationfor the degree of B.
