L'lnstitut a microfilm^ le meilleur exemplaire qu'il lui a iti possible de se procurer. Les details de cet exemplaire qui sont peut-^tre uniques du point de vue biblioarks and gardens adorn the hills, while l>elow, the hum of machinery, the substantial factories, and the tnjops of siturdy workmen bear witness to the prof, perity and enterprise of its citizens. As a manufacturing centre, ('.alt has earned the title of the " Manchester of Canada,"' and an inspection of its numerous industries furnishes a wide field to the intelligent tourist, while a glance at the numerous Diplomas, etc., held by our manufacturers show that their superior skill has been honored as well abroad as at home. Milling is carried on very extensively, while manufacturers of safes, looms, wood working machinery, saws, edge tools, toilet pins, carriage goods, fdes, furniture, knitted goods, tweeds, shirts, plush, pumps, furnaces and stoves export to every pomt in the country. The streets are lighted by electric light and gas, and an extensive system of paving and draining is under consideration. Negotiations are in hand for an unlnmted water works service, eciual to the best: and the efliciency of the Fire Department is shown by the immunity enjoyed from any serious conflagrations. Land for building purposes is comparatively cheap, while building materials abound, some remarkably fine quarries and brick yards being situated in the immediate vicinity. Nowhere are better educational advantages enjoyed, particular care being taken ia the selection of principals and teachers for the three large Ward Schools whose substantial appearance and extensive play grounds are remarked by visitors. Ihe (ialt Collegiate Institute has a continental reputation, and is presided over by a carefully selected staff of teachers. The retail trade of the town has ever been marked for its enterprise and push, the brilliantly lighted stores that line the business streets are stocked with all the leading, lines and novelties, and in several instances a healthy wholesale trade is being developed. At the hotels, ample first-class accommodation can be obtained, as they are all well fitted and conducted in an orderly manner. The spirit of philanthropy has not been wanting in Gait, a new hospital being in the course of erection which wdl contain ample accommodation for the sick and helpless. The Old Ladies' Home, a most excellent institution, is well worth a visit. The Churches cannot but be remarked. All are handsome substantial structures- that would do credit to any large city. Athletic sports of all kinds find ready patronage, and a handsome park is provided where games of all kinds cail be indulged in. A feature of the town is the handsome structure of the Gait Curling Club. The Railway facilities are unsurjiassed. The Canadian Pacific Railway main line from Montreal to Chicago taps the northern portion of ttie town, while at the west the Grand Trunk Railway have located their depot and Ireight sheds. On the south, near the centre of the town, the G. W. division of the same line has another depot. Trains arrive and depart at all hours, and ample accommodation for both freight and passengers is provided. The population of Gait is now about 8,000 which is yearly increasing. Its resources and location are such as to attract business men and others, and its success is assured. The Handsome Arches on Main Street were designed by MR. F. W. MELLISH, Architect.
