WHEREAS the persons hereinafler named have, by petition, .set forth that it is desirable that they, together with such other persons as may be hereafter associated with them, be Incorporated into a society by the name of "The Canadian Society of Civil Engineers," having for its objects and purposes to facilitate the acciuireiuont and inter- change of professional Knowledge among its Members, and more particularly to promote the acquisition of that species of knowledge which has special reference to the profession of civil engineering, and further to encourage investigation in connection with all branches and departments of knowledge connected with the profes- sion; and whereas it is expedient to grant the pi-ayer of the said petitioners; therefore. Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows: — 1. Thomas C. Keefer, Ottawa; Casimir S. Gzowski, Toronto; John Kennedy, Montreal; Henry T. Bovey, Montreal; Frederick N. Gis- borne. Ottawa; Edmund P. Hannaford, Montreal; William T. .Jen- nings, Ix)ndon; Samuel Keefer, Brockville; lx)uis Lesage. Montreal; Hugh D. lAimsden, Toronto; Alan Macdougall, Toronto; Henry F. Perley, Ottawa; Hurd Peters, St. John, Now Brunswick; Peter A. Peterson, Montreal; Henry S. Poole, Stellarton, Nova Scotia; Henry N- iRuttan, Winnipeg; Collingwood Schrieber, Ottawa; Percival W. The said Society shall have power to acquire and hold all lands and property necessaiy and required, in order to carry out the ob- jects and purposes for which incorpoi-atlon ia sought, provided that the annual value of the real estate, held at any one time for the ac- tual use of the Society, shall not exceed five thousand dollars; and the said Society shall also have power to sue and be sued, and im- plead in their corporate name; and to malte and pa^r .-eguiations and by-laws for the direction and management of the said Society, Including all rules that may be deemed necessary for the mainten- ance of the honour and dignity of the profession. Every candidate for election as Member must be at least thirty years of age, and must have been engaged in some branch of En- gineering for at least ten years, which period may include appren- ticeship, or pupilage in a qualified Engineer's office, or a term of in- struction in some school of Engineering recognized by the Council. The term of ten yeais will be reduced to eight years in the case of any candidate who has graduated with honours in his Engineering course. In every case the candidate must have had responsible charge of work for at least five years, and this not mt>rely as a skilled workman, but as an Engineor qualified to design and direct Engineering works. Two months after such action on his part the Council shall hnally consider the case, and if resigna- tion has not been temlered, or a satisfactory defence made, will then notify the Meml)er that he will be expelled in one month, un- less he elects to appeal from this decision, in which case his appeal shall be voted on by letter ballot. Neither the Council nor the Members bringing the charge shall vote. If ten per cent, of the votes are for expulsion, the Member shall be expelled, and the Council shall notify the said Member and the Society of the re-.::ult.
