 On W(jdue»(lay, Jutio 20, at 2 30 p.m., the great coa- 
 flag ration broke out in McLaiighlia'a boiler shop, Port- 
 land. A strong north westerly wind was blowing at the 
 time, and in aa incredibly short space of time Uames 
 burst out, carrying with them hundreds of houses, stores, 
 and lumber yards. Tlio fire spread rapidly towards the 
 business portion of St. John, clearing in its career entire 
 streets of buildings. Dock Street, Market Square, the 
 whole of Prince William Street, Water Street, south 8i<!e 
 and part of north side, King Street, King's Square, Ger- 
 main, Canterbury, Princess, Duke, LoiLster, Charlotte, 
 and Orange Streets* The whole of Lower Cove district, 
 Sydney and Carmarthen Streets, portions of Wentworth 
 and Pitt Streets. In fact, the entire city south of King 
 Street, including wharves and shipping have been totally 
 destroyed. 
 
 Among the public buildings destroyed are the now Post 
 Ollice, valued at |2()0,000; the Custom House, Victoria 
 Hotel, Academy of Music, Dramatic Lyceum, Koyal 
 Hotel, Bank Now Brunswick, Maritime Bank, Agencies 
 of Banks of Montreal and Nova Scotia, Savings Bank, 
 Victoria School House, Grauomar School, Trinity Church, 
 St. Andrew's Church, Centenary Church, Germain Street 
 Methodist Church, City Hall, Water Commissioner*s 
 Ollice, Banking housf s of Simeon, Jones A Co., Western 
 Union Telegraph Office, Daily Telegraph newspaper, 
 oflices of Daily News, Globe, b'reeman and Watchman 
 newspapei^ ; News Room, all Insurance oflices, Ritchie's 
 building, Law ofBoes, etc. 
 
 Among the leading business houses destroyed are those

 James Domville A Co., W. H. Thome & Co,, Thos. R. 
 Jones & Co., Geo. F. Smith, Evoritt & Butler, J. & W. F. 
 Harrison, Hall & Fairweather, Turnbull & Co , Magee 
 Bros., Stewart & White, Jas. Manson, J. & J. Hagan & Co., 
 Watts & Turner, Eastern Express Office, H. Chubb & Co., 
 Thos. Furlong, rianington Bros., Geo. 8. DeForrest, Geo. 
 Stewart, Jr., Logan & Lindsay, Thos. H. Hall, Landry &

 The only Bank saved was tho Bank of Noith Aniorica. 
 The Western Union Telegraph Ollice only saved instru- 
 ments and books. Kafts laden with goods and household 
 wares readily caught tlie ilanaes, and were consuiufd. 
 Tlio fierce wind drove tho ilames to the south and east, 
 and destroyed everytliing they met till they reached the 
 water's edge. Thousands of people wandered tho fctreets 
 homeless and in despair. Ttie destructior* of provisions 
 of all kinds pointed to famine ; had not relief cuDqo in 
 speedily, many must have peiishcd from want, as but 
 lew saved even their clothes. 
 
 The Gas Works were destroyed leaving the city in dark- 
 ness. 
 
 The lire 11 end not satisfied with getting decidedly the 
 best of the hand-to-hand encounter, the destroyer began 
 artillery practice in an etfective manner, kindling the 
 roofs of numerous houses with his fiery shots. Houj-o 
 after house in Germain and Horsiield St»^e9ts caught from 
 the air-bcrne messengers of destruction, and nothing but 
 the coiistant watchfulness of men on the roofs prevented 
 their burning. One volley of fiery particles, higher and 
 of longer range than the other^i, struck Mr. John E. Turn- 
 bull's factory and beautiful house at Lower Cove, more 
 than a mile distant, and quickly wrapped them in fiames. 
 So quickly did Mr. Turn bull's stone house succumb that 
 little or nothing was saved, and Mrs. Turnbull bad to be 
 taken out of the second story window, her escape by ihe 
 stairs having been cut oft* by the fire. This became the 
 centre of another fire radiator, and the surrounding build- 
 ings were soon a flame, there being no engine to interfere 
 with the progress of the devouring element. 
 
 Soon after this, one or two buildings in Horsfield Street 
 were ignited, a building or two in Germain Street next 
 caught, and Trinity Church began lo b'aze, carrying con- 
 sternation to every beholder. The flames ran up the 
 tall steeple, danced merrily on its pointed summit, and 
 ran along the gable-ends and roof ridge. It was a sad 
 sight to see the noble old structure, which had pointed 
 the way to Heaven for the loyalists and the generations 
 that have walked in their Ibotsteps, burned to the ground. 
 The neighboring buildings on Germain Street soon caught 
 fire, and the flames ran down the street to Notman'a 
 Studio, to the Germain Street Methodist Church, to St.

 only in the extreme northern portion of the town. Men 
 women and children, ull huddled t< gether, ran frantically 
 from one point to another. JJoats from Portland and 
 CcLileton conveyed load afier load to both these localities. 
 To the misery of wretchedness and despair was added 
 the pangs of hunger. 
 
 The steamer *' j^inipiesb" could not land her passengers

 until it became evident that King Htreet was doomed did it

 Among-t those who were l)adly burned was Thorn ns 
 Cloven, who has been noted for hs bravery by saving of lile 
 from drowning. He lias now distinguishtu himself by saving 
 the lives of children from lire. 
 
 An unknown lady did noble service in deluging tie walls 
 of a building in danger with water from a pail; and a boy, 10 
 years old, son of the late Jeremiah Murphy, seized his little 
 brother, 2 j ears old, and jumpeil from tlie second storey 
 window, thereby saving the child's life. 
 
 A woman and her new born child, born in the midst of the 
 panic, were picked np dead in the street— one of the saddest 
 scenes of this horrible tragedy. 
 
 A poor woman who locked her four children in a room to 
 prevent their straying: while she went out to ascertain the 
 extent of the fire, had not time to return before her dwelling 
 with its inmates were wiapped in flame?. 
 
 Before relief could be fully distributed some of the citizens 
 had been a day and a half without food. Eighteen dollars a 
 barrel was the exorbitant demand for flour belore relief came. 
 
 A very sad story is in connection with the burning of 
 the Victoria Hotel. When the man who was supposed to 
 he the last to come out before the walls fell in, oame out, 
 ho left about 15 or IG mon in the collar, where they had 
 gone some time before to get liquor from the casks which 
 were stored therein. As far as can be ascertained, it is be- 
 lieved that they all perished when the building fell.

 three men were found deliberately retting lire to a houHO. 
 In the confusion the rascrla made their escape. Four other 
 incendiaries are under arrest ; one of these hr^d a n.oTrow 
 escape from beinj^ lynchod by the mob ; f»a it wap. he re- 
 ceived a ballet fired from a revolver in the hands of un 
 indignent citizen. Ta'o others wore arrested for bnrninj^ 
 a house in Indiantown. 
 
 A determined attempt was made to set lire to the In- 
 tercolonial freight house, which was occupied by the poor 
 homeless unfortunates. 
 
 Two men were found with oakum, saturated with par- 
 affin, attempting to fire a building, but escaped.

 Whore all those who were depiivotl of house and 
 home have packed themselves can scarcely be 
 imagined. Of course every hotel and boarding

 are for the most part unable or unwilliiig to do any- 
 thing in the way of providing accommodation tor 
 tlicmselves. Very few avaiUd themselves of tlie 
 tents and marquees placed at the disposal ot tho 
 Co.nmittee by the Militia and regulars. Only one 
 or two fiimilies have been passing the nigljt in the 
 tents of the 97th in Chipman's field. The great 
 bulk ot homeless paupers are at present in the Kink. 
 Had this splendid building been destroyed, it is hard 
 to imagine, what could have been done with the 
 hordes of gaunt famishing creatures now stacked 
 about its walls. It affords a most curious and 
 melancholy scene. A double row of barrels and a 
 circular counter, guard the stores of provisions from 
 the clamoring tlirong outside. Behind this barrier 
 stand the Active Relief Committee, distributing food 
 and supplies of clothing. One man on duty at the 
 building, and on full pay, asked for a barrel of flour 
 from the relief supplies, and, of course, was refused. 
 Another was more successful ; a man, the proprietor 
 of two houses in Carleton, at present crowded from 
 root to cellar with lodgers, demanded and received 
 a barrel of ilour, which Avas made into bread and 
 sold at exorbitant prices to his im])Overished 
 boarders. Such instances as these have forced the 
 committee to adopt stringent methods of distributing 
 relief. On the raised platform that encircles the 
 skating floor of the Kink, is encamped a squalid and 
 most miserable tribe ot people. They are mostly 
 old women, too feeble to travel about the city, 
 women with infants in arms, and small children. 
 They lie huddled together for warmth, and in the

 majority of cases, with notliin2j at all to cover them 
 but an old and tattorccl ijuilt. The number that 
 thus find accommodatiotj varies from 400 to 000. 
 The worst sign is their evident intention of gettiniij 
 as much as possible out of the Relief Fund. A lot 
 of hulking loafino: vai^abonds, who have lived on 
 charity since the fire, were to be seen standing about 
 the door of tlie Rink, where a contingent of Hour 
 arrived. They were asked to assist in rolling the 
 provisions intended for ilu^fr own use and that of 
 their families into the building, and they actually 
 refused to do so unless pnid at the rnte of twenty 
 cents an hour.
