Hotels are first rate, ami their proprietors Inith courteous aiul ohIiKin ;. Then there are the <|uaint old htmsts of the early French settlers ; the historic forts ; the magnificent churches anend a Canadian winter, hi Montreal the air is so intensely dry that the cold is l)nt little felt. It is this fact that is largely resjKjnsihIe for making; the Canadian winter so eiijoyahle. An entire absence of moisture in the air, a brilliant snn in a cloudless sky, the sound of the tinkling sleigh l)ells over the cris|> snow, all combine to make the climatic conditions well-ninh ])erfect. Kememl)er, also, that winter is the season in Montreal. Trade is never so brisk, the streets never so animated nor the folks ever so merry, as when King Frost holds his court. Without mentioning the winter sj)orts anil pastimes ( in which no country excels Canada), surely there has l)een eiiou^jh said to induce some readers to turn their stejis toward Montreal in the very near future. And all are welcome. A few words of explanation as to the arrangement of this Iwok may aj)pro- priately come in now. The early history of the, city has been illustrated, as far as po.ssihle, by photo^jraphs of the old landmarks and buildings that are now unfortunately so rapidly disapjK'aring. A unique collection of old paintings and prints Ins l)een drawn »]mn for leproducing scenes never l)efore used in l)ook illustration. Then there are shown events that although easily called to memory by some as taking place within the last twenty years, will at the same time have a di.stinct value to the younger generation, the stranger and jwsterity. Amongst these may be mentioned, the floods before the erection of the j-uard wall, a remarkable picture showing the construction of the new Victoria bridge over the old t'lbular bridge, the old horse drawn tram cars, and man> others. The moictures(|ue features. May Montreal benefit by it. ^■ 6., STK. l-AMl>.'.'< ^TKKKT, MoNTKKM., -7t»« Sc-rUMuUr. ....-'• ^>«=- ^- , .ouia araw your attention to the foUowin, ,..«... which it wiU U- to your aavantaKc to look over. ,^j ^^j,., ^f the City and in.nu.liate The need ..f a really KcK,a ^^'^^^ J „„., t,,c ..«e or two sa.u,.lc ,.aKe> „ei«h»K,rhood of M---!-^';^^;;'S ^^^ o show you that the nubject .s ...,.« of the work, that is now m hand, «.!! proi-erlv treated at last. Jambh Catiikiiial St. J, \ MI'S C.\- 1 .ii;i>K.\i, on thf last side of Dom- inion Scinarf, with frontaKt on I)or- clicster Street, is as fine an example of church architectnre as can l)e found on the continent. It was started in 1S70 and huilt on the model of St. Peter's at Rome. The fa- cade stone work is remarkably hand- some and is sur- mounted hy twelve -Statutes represent- ing? Christ and the Ajwstles (Judas I.s- canot is apparently unrepresented). The dome, with the huge hall and cross ri.ses to a height of 250 feet from the Rround and forms a strikiiiR landmark from all over the city. The Cathedral is built in the shape of a cross, the dimensions beniR 330 feet long by 222 wide. The interior is impressive as regards size but lacks the rich coloring and fini.sh of older edifices. The singing is exceptionally fine and the .service on one of the Catholic feast days is as impressive to the Pro- testant as to the Catholic. A very different hou.se of worship is the little stone church that is to be found on St. James Street adjoining the city Court- hou.se. This building was erected in 1792 and was the first Protestant church in Montreal. The earliest congregation consisted chiefly of the military garri.son that had quarters close by, but no\. the Old St. Gahriki. Chi-rch. St. IIki.kn's Isi.anh (so iiaiiied liy Cltaniplain. after lli^ uifci lii-s op- jx)Hitc the city and is reached by u ferry at fre(|iieiit intervals from the wharf ()|)|H>»ite Bonsecuurs Church. As a place for an ideal afteriU)on's outing it is hard to iK-at. The greater part of the Island was granted by the (lovernnient to the City in iH74asa l)iihlic park, and there can lie fonml aniiisenients to suit all — from the yonng people who love the nierryno- ronnds. to the weary city man who wishes (jniet and solitude. At the lower end of the Island is an oixjii air swiinniinR hath huilt out in tlu St. l.awrence. The northeast corner of the Island is reserved for military pur|)oses and is surrounded on the land side by a hi«h palisade. An interesting relic of by-gone days remains in the form of an old loop-holed block house situated amidst the trees. From the western end of the isle a .splendid view of the Victoria Bridge is to Ix- had '•full broadside." The chief historical incident in connection with this spot is the burning of his flags by the Marquis de Levis, in the presence of the French army in vSepteml)er. i76I.K OK Il.M HTMATIDNM, A kNOW»HUK TllAMP AKUI'MIl THK M>«• free cfipics Mnlf poKe.
