 According to a cablegram from Rome it is stated that the diocese of St. 
 Albert, in tlie North-West Territory, has been subdivided and a portion of 
 it erected into a diocese named that of the Saskatchewan, to be administered 
 by a Coadjutor of Bishop Grandin, whose appointment has not been officially 
 announced up to January, 1891. 
 
 The Peace River, Athabnsca and McKenzie Districts, a portion of whi 'li 
 l)clonp:s to tlieso dioceses, compii.se numerous missions and about 15,000 Roman 
 Catholic Indians, of whom the Oblate Fathers are the sole missionaries.

 MISSIONS AND PARISHES OF CANADA. 
 
 . 1621 TO 1800. 
 
 In 1666, under the administration of Francois DeLaval do Montmorency, 
 Bishop of Pctree, and also of the Governor De Courcelles and of Talon the 
 Intendant, New France comprised only seven parishes or missions which 
 kept registers of the parishioners, viz. : —

 3. Sillery do 1636 
 
 4. Montreal do 1642

 At the time of the cession of the country in 1760, the number of parishes 
 was 113, and at the end of the century (1709) it had reached 141. At the

 of Canada is about 1,170, and that of the Missions, exceeds 450. 
 
 RELIGIOUS ORDERS. 
 
 During the past 650 years, the Order of Saint Francois lias furnished :— 
 •217 saints and blessed, 1,500 martyrs, 10 Popes and Cardinals, 4,000 Arch- 
 bishops and Bishops. 
 
 The Order of Saint Dominique has contributed :— 4 Popes — Innocent V, 
 Btnoit XI, Saint Pie V, and Bcnoit XIII ; more than 80 Cardinals and 
 l^(JOO Bishops. 
 
 The Order of Saint Benoit has furnished :— 43 Popes, 200 Cardinals, •25tJ 
 {patriarchs, 600 Archbishops and more than 40,000 Bishops, besides 25 
 Enjpcrors, Kings and Queens who abandoned their Thrones for the Monas- 
 teries of this celebrated Order.
