 suggestions as to the principle and mode of distributing 
 relief as they may be able to afford.

 Resolved— That an application be mads by this Coni- 
 mittee to His Excellency the Governor General, request- 
 ing His Excellency to bring under the view of Her 
 Majesty's Government in England, the calamity which 
 lias latelv befallen this city, and to solicit Her Majesty's 
 Government to take into consideration the expediency of 
 some aid being given on the part of the Imperial Govern- 
 nient for the relief of the inhabitants of Quebec, whom 
 this disaster has reduced to destitution.

 cellence de mettre sous les yeux du gouvernement de 
 Sa Majeste en Angleterre la calamite qui a frappe cette 
 ville etde solliciter le gouvernement de Sa Majeste de 
 prendre en consideration I'expedience de la part du gou- 
 vernement Imperial de donner quelque aide pour le 
 soulagemer t des habitants de Quebec, que le d^sastre a

 The Committee for the suggestion of measures for pre- 
 venting fires, presented a further report, and it was 
 adopted. 
 
 TUESDAY, 17th JUNE. 
 
 The following Resolutions were then adopted, viz : — 
 
 1. — That it is necessary lliat the proprietors of the 
 
 houses destroyed at the late fire, wlio may liave the 
 
 means of re-huilding, efieet that object as speedily as 
 
 possible before the return of the winter season. 
 
 2. — That the alignment of tlie streets to be widened, 
 as well as the other streets, be given without delay. 
 
 3.— That as it is desirable to obtain the consent of the 
 proprietors on the str'^ets to be widened, this Committee 
 will come to the assistance of the Corporation by promis- 
 ing to allow to the proprietors who may be the most 
 reasonable, assistance proportionate to their sacrifices 
 for the common interest. 
 
 4. — That it be recommended to the Corporation, to 
 issue public notices for contracts for building bricks, 
 covering tiles, slates, lime and other building luateriais, 
 to such amount, and to be given in by such time as they 
 may judge best, to be disposed of on the best terms that 
 can be afforded to the sufferers. 
 
 5. — That it be recommended to the Corporation to 
 enact a By-Law which shall establish tlie precautions to 
 be taken hereafter in buildings of Stone and Hrick, and 
 the mode of covering the roofs v»'itli incombustible 
 materials, to provide as much as possible against ihe 
 progress of fires. 
 
 6. — That in the opinion of this Comnutlcp, it is im- 
 practicable, at present, to compel the proprietors to 
 rebuild their houses with brick or stone ; but that all 
 those who build with wood on the streets, ought to lath 
 and plaster the outsides of their buildings to the thick- 
 ness of at least oiiC inch, or to paint and sand the same. 
 
 7. — That it be recommended to the Corporation to 
 prohibit immediately, and for the future, the use of 
 shingles and double boarded roofs within the limits of the 
 City, and to provide that at the expiration of ten years 
 from this date, buildings situated within the said limits 
 have their roofs covered with incombustible materials. 
 
 8. — ^That this Committee will allow to the Corporation, 
 for the widening of the streets, and the aforementioned 
 materials, such aids as may be practicable out of the 
 funds, which may be at the' disposal of this Conuuittee, 
 after it shall have provided for the other wants of the 
 sufferers. 
 
 9. — That this Committee, in the distribution of aid to 
 the sufferers of the 28th May, will grant to the most 
 necessitous of them a sum of i)er cent on the

 maisons, lequel lattage devra fitre reconvert de nmrtier

 passer im reglement a I'effet de defVndre a I'avenir et 
 des a present I'usage du bardeau ainsi que celui des 
 doubles couvertures en planches dans les limites de 
 la cite, et aussi d'ordonner qn'a rexjjiration de dix ans,

 Uesolved — That a Committee of five members be 
 named to act in concert with Mr. Smolensk!, in the esta- 
 blishment of a Brick Manufar ry 5 and that a sum no"; 
 exoeejiing £800 be placed at the disposal of such Com- 
 mittee, to be advanced lo Mr. Sn)olenski, according to 
 rlieir discretion and repaid by him in bricks at their 
 valuation ; such bricks to be afterwards distributed to 
 the sutTerers ; and that it be an instruction to the said 
 Committee to proceed with the utmost possible diligence. 
 
 FRIDAY, 4th JULY. 
 
 On motion of Mr. Sheriff Sewell, seconded by Mr. 
 Jones, it was 
 
 Resolved — Tiiat it be expedient to encourage the 
 immediate construction of st(.iie and brick buildings, to 
 be covered with incombustible materials, iu the hurut 
 districts, and with a view t() the carrying out of this 
 Resolution, tljat as soon as (he city Conticil shall have 
 jjecided U()on the width of the streets to be given, and 
 alignments to be made, this committee will grant to 
 such uninsured projjrictors, Who shall built houses of 
 brick or itone, ami covered with incombustible materials, 
 an encouragement for doiug so. 
 
 On motion of H. S. Huot, Esq., seconded by the Revd 
 B. O'Ueilly, it was 
 
 Resolved — That there be granted to every destitute 
 proprietor of a house destroyed by either of the late fires 
 ah aid according to circumstances, not exceeding ten 
 pounds in any one case, towards erecting between this 
 time and the next autumn a temporary lodging for him- 
 self and his family — provided -the Corporation enact a 
 bv-law to the effect that every person building in wood 
 in the burnt district shall demolish what he may so build 
 within eighteen months, and take security for that being 
 done ; and that the funds at the disposal of this Commit- 
 tee be not advanced to any person who shall not have 
 given such security, to the satisfaction of this Committee.

 by the Honble. W. Walker, it was resolved — 
 
 That this Committee consider the Hy-law adopted by 
 the Corporation on the 8th instant, as substantially 
 meeting the views with which the Kosolution of this 
 Committee passed on the4tli instant, was agreed to ; and 
 thatso soon as any person rebuilding a wooden temporary 
 house in either of the burnt Suburbs shall produce a 
 certificate from the Corporation, that such house bus 
 been built, and shall shew to the satisfaction of the Com- 
 mittee of Distributioh that he has givin good security to 
 demolish the same in the time provided by the taid JJy- 
 law, or repay the sum advanced to this Committee, when 
 thereunto required, there be advanced to such person a 
 sum not exceeding £10 ; such adviiiicc in each case to 
 be made by the Committee of Distribution, and to be on 
 account of such sum as the person building shall be con- 
 sidered entitled to receive from any |)nl)lic fund wliatcver 
 for indemnity for his loss by fire, and lor rebuilding.
