 BOBCAYGEON 
 
 
 Is a Village of about ,,ooo inhabitants, situated in the County o< Victoria, 
 .n ihe Irovmce of Ontario, ., miles distant from the County town of 
 L.ndsay with which town it has easy connection by boat during the 
 season of navigation, U, from the middle o. April or first of Mav until 
 the middle of November. A commodious and. fast passenger steamer 
 makes two trip* daily each way between JJobcaygeon and Lindsay. 
 
 I he vfllage and vicinity is known for its pretty scenery and good fish- 
 ing and boating, and is a popular tummer resort with many Canadians 
 and Americans. Bobcaygeon has also boat. and stage connection with 
 the -County town of I'eterboro', 24 miles distant (,8 miles boat and 6 
 5tage). ^ - ^ ' 
 
 UNDSA Y 
 
 Is a station on the Midland division of the Grand Trunk Railway 69 
 miles north east from Toronto (the Capital of the Province), and 43 miles 
 north from Port Hope, on Lake Ontario, opposite Charlotte, the port of 
 Rochester. The steamer for Bobcaygeon makes close connection with 
 all passenger trains at Lindsay ; and one can leave Toronto or Port Hope 
 m the morning and spend a couple of hours at Bobcaygeon, and be back 
 same evening. 
 
 In winter continue by train one station beyond Lindsay, namely, to 
 Fenelon Falls, which is only 1 1 miles from Bobcaygeon, and has connlc^ 
 tion by stage, which leaves ;^'enelon Falls for Bobcaygeon immediately 
 after arrival of the trains. We will prefer, however, to send cur convey- 
 ance (with fur coats and other wraps) to meet all visitors at Fenelon Falls 
 who wire us of their coming. 
 
 BIG 
 
 Is situated in Pigeon Lake, opposite the village of Bobcaygeon ; contains 
 1,200 acres, and is entirely devoted by Mossom Boyd & Co. to the raising 
 of Aberdeen-Angus cattle and Clydesdale and Percjheron horses. It is 
 ^'stant \ of a mile across the water from Bobcaygeorj. 
 
 On it our cattle are perfectly secure from corl lamination by other 
 cattle outside the herd. I

 OLD JOCK (1) was of the old Keillor stock, and in 1844 was sold for one hundred guineas. He wbk first,

 and again at Perth in i85a4_hf was first at the Royal Irish at Londonderry in 1847, where also he 
 stood s*cend for the great Purcell challenge cup of $500.00, open to all breeda.

 ENCHANTRESS (981) won the first prize at the Highland Society's show at Perth in 1871.

 pair, at the Arlgus Association at Dundee in 1859 ; the third prize as a cow at the Highland Society's 
 show at Perth in t86t ; and the first prize at Arbroath of the Angus A«|ociat ion in the same year. 
 
 EMILY in 1858 gained the Angus Society's second prize, at Kirriemuir, as a cow. 
 
 ERMINE REARER was imported from Scotland when only one year old, and was never shown.

 He is by President 3rd (946), a noted prize winner, dam Flower of Strathmore, 479, by Cupbearer

 liLACK PRINCk OF TILLYFOUR ^366) is by Rob Roy Macgragor (367), dam Maid of Orleans 
 (sSo^ winqer of first prize as the best two-year-old heifer at the Highland Society** thow at 
 Aberdeen in 1 358. Black Prince is tire of several very noted thow animals. 
 
 HANTON (a>8) gained the first prize at the Highland Society's show at Berwick in 1834, and gained 
 the first prize in Parii in 185!^. In 1836 he was alto, first prize aged bull at th« Highland Society'i 
 ' thow at |nvetiicts. 
 
 ANGUS (45) won the firtl prize in the data of bulls of any age at the Highland Society's thow at 
 Edinburgh in 1848, being then two years and two nontht old. 
 
 PANMURE.(si) in 1843 gained the Highland Society's first prize at Dundee at the bcU aged bull, 
 be iting fifteen others ; and the first prize at the Eastern Forlkrthtre Aitociation in thetama year, 
 He gained the Four Counties first prize and numerout othert in Aberdeenthire, never being beaten 
 except by hit ton Monarch (44). '

 . ball at the Industrial Exhibition, Toronto, in 1883, and at the Dominion Exhibition, Ottawa, the 
 
 - samaysar ; aiid at the latter show he won the silver medal as the best bull of any age. In 1884 he 
 
 was first prise aged ball at the Dominion Exhibitioa at London, and at the Industrial, Toronto. 
 
 Ha was killed by an accident on baard the Bii Island ferry boat, on tolh May, 1887.

 old. He is the sire of Coquette iiih (7838), the champion fat heifer at the Smithfield Fat Stock

 SYBIL (974} the foundress of this Sybil family, won first priz« as one of a pair of cows at tAe Rvyal - 
 Northern Society's show in 1869, and was second at the Highland Society's* how at EdinlipHrgh samtl -^ 
 year. In 1870 she won first at the Royal N6rthern and first at the HichlMirf Sociel^s show at 
 . Dumfrtrs, and in 1871 the gold medal at the Highland Hockt/a sImw at Perth. The Sybil family 
 hassinceproducedanumber of prize winners. A group of this family won Lord Aberdeen's prize 
 at the Royal Northern Society's show in 1884 for the best family of polled breed. 
 
 CHIVALRY (1763) in 1883 gainad the first prize in his class at the Dominion (Canada) Exhibition and 
 at the indnstrial Exhibition, Toronto, and the silver medal for best-bull of any age. Ih 1884 he

 " In the Queen trib« there is a monument to Mr. McCombie's skill and success as a 
 
 breeder. Wehaveinit theresultofthecombined iffortsincattte breeding of Mr. Fullerton 
 
 '^and Mr. McCombie, but chiefly of the latter, as the material was maniputated by him 
 
 during a period of no less than thirty-seven years. In examining the career of the 
 
 Sueen tribe, the first point that excites notice is the illustration which it affofds of Mr. 
 cCombie's remarkable faculty of instantly and with unerring accuracy perceiving the 
 inhererit qualities and possibilities of development in an animal. This rare acquire- 
 ment was undoubtedly perfected when he was transacting his immense business in buy- 
 ing and selling store cattle. It came to his aid on the occasion when he attended 
 the late Mr. Fullerton's sale at Ardovie, in 1844, and made purchases that have 
 ■ become historical in connection with the polled breed, tn that year Mr. McCombie 
 brought to Tillyfour, from Ardovie, two young heifers, Queen Mother (348) and Jean 
 Ann (ao6), (uU sisters, both out of Queen of Ardovie (29) and after Panmure (51). The, 
 breeding and achievements of these animals have already beeii deicrilied. 
 
 " There was something in their appearance and in their pedigree which fascinated 
 Mr. McCombie, and he determined on securing more of the same sort. lie obtained, 
 after considerable trouble, the bull Monarch (44), who was got by Panmure (51 )< and 
 out of Julia (671K the latter after Panmure (51), and having for dam Susanna, a fujt^ 
 sister of Queen of Ardovie (29). ■ ii 
 
 '" With the produce of these closely-allied animals Mr. McCombie resolved to risk 
 hitfaine as a breeder, and he had no reason to regret the choice, for the strain has made a 
 reputation second to none in the annals of the breed. 
 
 "Monarch was twice put to Queen Mother and the produce in 1847 was Lola 
 Montes (208), and in 1849, Bloomer (201), both of whom became celebrated prize cows.

 " Very few female Ericas have been parted with from Ballindalloch since the fkmily 
 acquired its reputation, and it is thus difficult to indicate witli precision the market value 
 of the tribe. Young Viscouht fetched 225 guineas in pnblic competition, and a female

 «• A few remarksabout the sires used at Kinnochtry will be interesting. The fi"' "<"• 
 •blesireiused were the early Keillor locks, as already mentioned. Both Black Jock (3) and 
 Young Jock (4) were W. K«rgu8on\ property. They were as good as the most of the 
 bulls to be seen at the timirprfcseot, and both were splendid jitters. After them came 
 Hush, 130, from Mr. Watson, who had been using him. Hugh was th« last calf of Old 
 Grannie, i, and was also a very superior bull, leaving some excellent stock. The 
 last Keillor stud bull. President 3rd, 2*6, bred at PalwylTo after Tresident 2nd, 54, ind 
 out of Isabella of Balwyllo, 423, was also used. He was a long, level, stylish bull, and a 
 prize winner at the Highland Society. The Baronet, 33Q, bred at Crathes, but from 
 Keillor stock, was also used. He was quite e^ual to President 3rd as a getter, and was 
 kept for a good many years. In 1863, when eight years old, he gained the first prue at 
 the Scottish Midland Agricultural .Society's show, and at Perth. ^ . . 
 
 " Young Hugh, 131, after Hugh, 130, and out of Prjrie, 586, was then used, being 
 about the most gay and stylish bull Mr. Ferguson ever had. He was never fed for 
 showing, but in 1851 he was exhibited at the Perth show of the Highland Society and, 
 althougli in lean condition was highly commended. Young Hugh carried all before him 
 at the local shows, and was sire of the cow Piinces.s 2nd, 916, now sixteen years old, • 
 and who has twice, in lean condition, beat Highland Society prize cows. It was, Mr. 
 Ferguson informs us, mainly from this bull that the Kinnochtry Princesses got tAeir high 
 bred looking and characteristic heads. Yojing Hugh was sold to Mr. William Watson, 
 who was then engaged breeding polled cattle at Binns, near Dundee. After the 
 Baronet, 339, and Young Hugh, 131, Crathie Jock, 34D, calved in 1863, was used, Ured 
 by Mr. Ferguson, he was out of Princess of Kinnochtry, 914, and got by the Baronet, 
 339. He gained a large number of prizes and wa-s a remarkable instance of early 
 maturity. Meeting with an accident, when under three years old, he was sold by 
 weight to Mr. Young, Whitelawstone, near Dundee, when his four quarters were found 
 to weigh 132 stones, dead weight. After Crathie Jock, Crathie 2nd, 342, also bred by 
 Mr. Ferguson, was used. Crathie 2nd was got by the Baronet, 339, out of Miss Scott, 
 913, by Hugh, 130; g.d.. Beauty of Kinnochtry, 595, by Young Jock, 4; ggd-. Prize, 
 586, being thus of the Baroness family. In Mr. Ferguson's possession he gained the 
 first prizes as a yearling at the shows of the Scottish Midland and Stormount Union 
 Agricultural Societies, iili 1868. He w*s sold when two years old to Mr. William 
 Owen, of Blessington, County Wicklow. and, in Mr. Owen's possession, won the first 
 prize as a two-year-old at the National Show, in Ireland, in 1879, the first prize at the 
 Royal Dublin Society's spring show, in 1870, and the first prize at the Irish National 
 «how, the same yemr. Crathie 2nd was a lengthy, gay, and fine handling, stylish buU. 
 and Mr. Owen kept him a long time. Mr. Ferguson Ijelieves that this bull gave an 
 impetus to the breeding of polled cattle in Ireland, leaving excellent stock in Mr. ,Owen s

 "Mr. Brown was perhaps, of all bicederii of |Killed cattle, the most systematic. 
 There was no haphazard in his mode of breeding. He fixed upon a certain strain of 
 blood and a certain type of cattle, and he labored to realize a distinct aim with such 
 skill and method as has been displayed by the Messrs. Booth and Mr. Bates, in breeding 
 Shorthorns. His cattle were bred from close affinities, but the dangers Of excessive in' 
 breeding were guarded against by keeping a large number of stock bulls. As the result 
 of Mr. Brown's rare tact and judgement, a thoroughly characteristic herd was built up. 
 His animals possessed a uniformity of type and^tyle that was quite unmistakable. In the 
 show-yard the herd had reached nigh eminence lor several years previous to i860, when 
 it sustained a serious reverse. At the Highland Society's show at Dumfries that year, 
 Mr. Brown exhibited three animals. They all won prites, but the victory was dearly 
 bought. = The cattle caught pleuro- pneumonia at Dumfries, and communicated it to the 
 rest ot tlie herd, which, before the plague was stayed, was reduced to seven animals. 
 Mr. Brown courageously, and with renewe«l energy and determinatiofi, resumed breeding 
 with this remnant of a previously splendid herd. Showing was abstained from until 
 1868, when the bull March retreived the laurels of the herd, and until Mr. Brown's 
 death in 1874, show^yard honors again fell thick and fast. The new herd had thus been 
 actually in existence for only about fourteen years, a period too brief for the maturing of 
 Mr. Brown's plans. Had his life been spared a few years longer, it was confidently 
 expected that Mr. Brown would have made Westertown the scene of as wonderful 
 achievements in cattle breeding as Warlaby or Kirklevington. But this was not to be. 
 Mr. Brown's death in 1874 abruptly terminated a career that was full ofpromisc. At 
 the dispersion of his herd in 1874, the animals fell into goo<l hands. They enriched 
 many already valuable stocks, and specimens of the Westertown families still exist in 
 considerable numbers. It is to be regretted, however, that no one has attempted to 
 complete the half-finished work commeinccd so systematically and successfully by Mr. 
 Brown."

 '* The foundation of the piesent Rothiemay herd may be said to have been laid by 
 the purchase by Major Tayler of two black polled cows named Old Lady Jean and Mist 
 Morrison, from the late General Hay, of Kannes, and a bull named Finfray 125, from 
 the late Mr. James Walker, Wester Fintray, about the year 1846. The cows were very 
 large and strong. Their descendants have been regularly retained and bred from, and 
 
 . in the * Herd Book ' the pedigree of the strains established by these line animals trace 
 from Old Lady Jean 187, and Miss Morrison 833. Another cow early added to the 
 herd was Victoria, of Glenbarry 534, calved in 1855, after B'ack Jock of Mulben 104. 
 She was acquired from her breeder, Mr. Paterson, Mulben. From Old Lady Jean 
 the Rothiemay Georgina tribe has sprung, through Georgina of Rothiemav 53a, by 
 Fintray 125, calved in- 1852; from Miss Morrison the Rothiemay family of that name 
 descends^and a third family comes from the Mulben cow, Victoria of Glenbarry 534., 
 This thtn was the material on which Mr. Tayler's fine herd has been reared. For many 
 yetiTJi no females were added besides those bred in it,^hd much.of its success is due to 
 
 ^he careful selection of sires. At Mr. McCombie's sale at Tillyfour, in 1857, the bull 
 Napoleon 257 was bought for 40 guineas. Napoleon was out of Bloomier 201 , a daughter 
 of Queen Mother 348, and after Hanton 228. He was described by Mr. McCombie in 
 the sale'catal(^ue as being 'goi by the best bull, and out of the best cow in the world 
 in the opinion of the exposer.' Napoleon was also individually a first »class animal ; he 
 won the second prize as a two-year old at the Al)erdeen show of the Highland Society, in 
 ■858, and was used in the herd for a considerable time. The next sire used was 
 Damascus 495, bought when a calf at the Earl of Southesk's sale in 186 1. After the 
 Queen bull Windsor 221, he was out of Deodora 1232, of the Kinnaird D6ra family. 
 Damascus was' a splendid bnlf, and left excellent stock . By these two bulls some of the 
 best blood in the country was infused into the herd. Napoleon was very strong in th? 
 Tillyfour Queen blood, which was also continued by the sire of Dainascus ; while the 
 dam of the latter was after a son, and out of a daughter of Cupbearer 59, through whom 
 the Keillor and Mains of Kelly strains were introduced. - 
 
 " Then followed Elector 427, bred by Colonel Gordon, winner of the third prize at 
 the Highland Society's shows in 1870 and 1871, and second in 1872. The other ^ires 
 used were Bon Accord 446, bought Jrqm the Earl of Fife in 1871, winner of the second 
 prize at the Highland Society's show at Kelso, in 1872 ; Cantnore 626, bought in 1874 
 from Mr. Ellnslie, Cardenston ; Waterside King 870,, after Mr. Bowie's Major 3rd, 662, 
 and of the Kinnaird Fanny family, purchased in 1876 from Mr. Wilken, Vvaterside 
 of Forbes, and Sir Maurice 13 19, of the Fyvie Flower family, purchased at Colonel 
 Gordon'ssalein 1876, when a calf for 42 guineas, . • . . . . * • • • • • 
 At least three distinguished bulls have been bred in the herd, viz. : Clansman 398, of 
 the Miss Morrison family, third prite winner at the Highland Society** show at Inver- 
 ness in i8i55, second at the same Society's show in 1868, and first at Edinburgh in 1869 ; 
 Sir Roger 702, of the Georginn family* who was second ^prize one-year-old at the 
 Highland Society's show at Glasgow in 1875, and died when rising two years old ; aind 
 
 'Sir Wilfrid 1 166, of the Georgina -family, first prize one-year-old at the Highland 
 
 Society's show at Aberdeen in 1876, and second prize two-year-old at Edinburgh, 1877.

 I have been introduced to the herd. Among these, however, may be named Fashion 
 982, and Nosegay 2nd, 2156, from Sir George Macpherson Grant, and Crocus 2nd, 
 3765, from Mr. Hannay. Mr. Tayler has succeeded in rearing three families of much 
 merit, the Georginas, Miss Morrisons and Victorias. From what we have already said, 
 it will be seen that the members of these families have proved themwlves worthy of the

 age. He is got by the noted bull challen«er (iste) whose picture is chosen to adorn the fifth volume 
 
 ' ^ of the Polled Herd Book and who sirtfd Coquette i ith (7838X the champion fat heifer at the Smith-
