In making the Report required of them, the Executive Committee of the Church Society submit in the first place an Abstract of the Reports from the Local Committees. WOODSTOCK. The Reverend S. D. Lee Street forwarded a Report from the Woodstock Committee, in which they declare their unabated attach- ment to the Society, and their thankfulness for the measure of success which has attended its exertions, as well as those of similar Institutions in Canada and Nova-Scotia. They look upon these Societies as the best and most efficient means that could have been secured for advanc> ing the interests of the Church and the consequent extension of true Religion, and most earnestly and sincerely trust that all Churchmen may be induced to come forward to their aid, considering it not merely as a boundcn duty, but as a high privilege to do so. They refer with admiration and thankfulness to the great exertions which have been, and continue to be made in the Mother Country for the extension of the Church abroad as well as at home, and trust that the noble exam* pie there set will be followed in the Province. They fear, however, that the extreme pressure of the times will render tlieir own contri- bntion far less than they would wish. The destitute state of many populous Settlements in all parts of the Province, not excepting their own extensive County, excites them to urge strongly upon the Society the adoption of the most ready means for securing the employment of additional labourers in the Lord's. Vineyord. e 1- la IS e e n y h E'J They express gratitude for the liberal Appropriations hitherto ex> tended towards that section of the Province, and beg leave most respectfully to urge upon the Society the increasing importanue uf further liberal grants of Uooki*. Out of former grants they have laid the fouadution of a Lending Library, which is kept in the Vestry Room of Saint Luke^s Church, and promises to be of great utility . They request Books for the enlargement of the Library, and alwj Prayer Books, Bibles and Tracts. CHATHAM. The Reverend S. Bacon has transmil^ted a copy of the Minutes of a Meeting of this Local Committee, held on ihe Festival of the Epiphany, af\er Divine Service in Saint Paul's Church.. Among the Resolutions passed on that occasion, one is to the effect that the formation of a Lending Library in that Parish is desirable, and that the Rector make this known to tho Society. It was also resolved, that the Honorable Joseph Cuiard, and John A. Street, Es- quire, be re-elected Lay Deputies tout - ;;'■ the Annual Meeting of this iSociety in Fredericton. That the Rector and Lay Deputies be requested to bring before the next Annual Meeting of tho Society, the great advantage of transmit- ting immediately, on the arrival of Books from England, a full Cau-i- logue of all Books imported for the Society, for the information of the Members of the Church in this Mission. That the Committee recommend a liberal grant from the funds of this Society towards the building of a Church about to be erected in the Parish of Nelson. SAINT ANDREWS. Reverend Dr. Alley transmits the following Resolutions, passed at a Meeting of the Saint Andrew's Local Committee, on Wednesdy, Ja- nuary 10th. Re-solved, That while we continue to regard the Church Society with the most lively interest, as in the highest degree conducive to the advancement of the Church, Nve deeply lament that the unavoidable and unusual pecuniary pressure which still exists, prevents the pay- ment of subscriptions by many who, under other circumstances, would be most ready to support it, and- that consequently the amount to be rc.niltcd this vear, must b(! much less limn we would othcrwi.se wish. m 6 Resolved, That J. W. Chandler, and G. D. Street, Esquires, be Lay Deputies to the General Meeting of the Church Society, to b« held at Fredericton on Wednesday and Thursday, the 7th and 8th of February next — and that they recommend that a grant be made towards putting a Tower on Chamcook Chapel of Ease, with the usual grant of Books and Tracts. In a letter accompanying these Resolutions, Dr. Alley acknowledges the receipt of the Society's last appropriation of Books, and states that they have been distributed as follows : — 20 Prayer Books for the use of Chamcook Chapel, and the remainder for that of the poorer class in the Parish Church. The other Books have been added to the Lending Library. The Chapel at Chamcook, he says, is complete and comfortable, capable of accommodating from 150 to 200 persons, and well built with stone, with a burial ground of one acre. The Tower referred to in one of the above Resolutions will cost i£60, of which he hopes the Society will contribute one third. He remarks that the people of his mission make up ;£^100 per annum for the support of a Curate. KINGSTON. The Local Committee of this Parish met on the 1st January, and ResolVed, That this Committee return thanks to the Society for having in the past year favoured this Parish with a grant of Books to the value of .£6. That this Committee recommend that one-third of the amount raised in this Parish during the past year be applied to increase the fund for defraying the expenses of Travelling Missionaries ; one*third to the building and enlarging of Churches, and the remaining one-third to the general purposes of the Society. That this Committee respectfully urge a favourable consideration from the Executive Committee of the application to be made on behalf of the new Church on the Long Reach in this Parish. That David Pickett, Esquire, one of the Wardens, be appointed a Lay Deputy to attend with the Rector the General Meeting at Frede- ricton, in February next. They transmit a list of Subscriptions amounting to <£14 2 4^ Collection after Sermon, - - - 4 6 jei8 8 4i .S, N. SPRINGFIELD. The Local Committee of Springfield again assure the Society of the interest they take in its welfare, and return thanks for a valuable addition to their Parochial Library. They regret that the causes which led to a diminution of their Subscriptions last year still exist ; but trust they may not be forgotten by the Society when distributing their favours for Parochial Libraries. The Reverend W. Scovil reports a sum of jC7 6s. already collected, and hopes it will be increased. NORTON. The Committee return thanks for the very acceptable grant in aid of their Parochial Library, but find themselves compelled reluctantly to apply to the liquidation of a debt contracted in repairing the Church what they would otherwise have contributed to the funds of the Church Society. They refer to the Third Annual Report, in which a statement ap* pears that in the year 1838 the sum of ^100 had been expended, and that i^90 would stilt be wanted to complete the repairs then in progress. In addition to these repairs, the Church Corporation found themselves obliged to increase their debt by erecting a Gallery at the Western end ; and although desirous to testify an undiminished interest in the Church Society, they feel it to be an object of primary importance to free the Church in which they worship from all pecuniary incum- brance. " They trust, however, that their object will shortly be accomplished, when they will be enabled to renew their exertions on the Society's behalf, and by increasing subscriptions make amends for the necessary relinquishment of their aid at the present time.** SUSSEX VALE. The Reverend H. N. Arnold reports that he has found it impossible to collect any thing this year for the Church Society. His Parish Church has undergone a thorough repair during the last season, and the altered state of affairs in the Parish has made it a work of diffi< culty. He indulges the hope that in another year they will be enabled to renew their subscriptions. SACKVILLE. The Reverend John Black writes that he is directed to acknowledge with much thankfulness the receipt of Dooks and Tracts in November last to the amount of Six Pounds, and to state that the tiooka received by that Committee since the formation of the Society have been set apart for the commencement of a Lending Library, with the exception of such as seemed more suitable for distribution. The Tracts have been principally used in the Sunday Schools of Sackville and Dor- chester. The Prayer Books and Testaments also have been chiefly required for the same use, but in future shall be sold, and the proceeds remitted to the Treasurer at Fredericton. The Honourable A. E. Botsford will again be present as our Delo* gate, and will pay the amount of our contributions into the Treasurers hands. Mr. Black snys, he has done what he could from the Pulpit and otherwise to make the people sensible of the claims of the Society upon their support ; but there is such a scarcity of money in that quarter, that he fears the collection will be less than that of last year. SHEDIAC. The Local Committee of this Parish met and Resolved, That the Rector, and Lay Deputy, D. Hanington, Esquire, be requested to solicit from the General Committee a grant of Books, adapted to the higher classes of a Sunday School in this Parish, containing about fifty pupils, and also calculated to serve as a Lending Library for the sumo. RICHIBUCTO. The Reverend T. N. DeWoIfe reports that the Local Committee of this Parish met on the 20th December. There was a good attendance, and a lively interest manifested in the proceedings of the Society. The contributions, which are much larger than Inst year, (£12 lis. 9(2.) will be immediately forwarded. At the Meeting the following Resolution was unanimously adopted : That Uiis Committee feel grateful for the assistance already given by the Society to the erection of the Church at Richibucto ; and that, as the Church requires the addition of a Tower, and the completion of the Gallery, an application be respectfully made by the Reverend the Rector to the Church Society for some assistance to enable the Vestry to defray a pari of tlie expenses, incurred. > r I Mr. DeWulfe states that thu Church is very neatly finished, and when tho Tower is addpd will bu ari ornament to the place. Tho contemplated work at the lowest calculation will cost :£100; and as the people are moking great exertions lo raise the necessary means, he hopes the Society will give its aid. WELDFORD. The same Reverend Gentleman reports that the Local Cummitlce of Weldford mot on Monday, January 8, and passed the following Resolution : That tho Members of this Cummittce feel grateful to the Church Society for assisting them lo erect a Church in this Parish, and that os the Tower is not yet finished, and as they are unublo to finish it with* out farther aid, un application be respectfully made by tho Reverend the Rector to tho Church Society for some assistance. Mr. De Wolfe expresses confidence that the Society will favorably entertain this application, ok coming from a very deserving Congrega* tion much in need of old. They built their Church without the aid usually afforded by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Purls ; but it must remain in its present unfinished slate unless they can now obtain help. The small number of Subscribers in Weldford is to bo attributed not to want of willingness, but to want of ability. • GAGETOWN. Mr. John J. Millidgo, the Secretary of this Cummittec, slates that they return thanks for the Books received from tho Society during the past year, and flatter themselves that the purpose to which they have been applied wi!) meet with approbation. Anxious to muke them gc« nerally useful in the Parish, it was agreed to give them as a coiti* mencement of a Lending Library ; and they are happy in being able to say that the public appreciate the gift, and that it is already doing much good. The Committee feel bound to apologize for the small* ness nf the contribution they now hand in ; but boldly assert that it is not occasioned by any diminution of afTection for the Church or tho Church Society : on the contrary, it is their increasing love of the Church which must account for the deficiency. The Committee with others of the community have been continually engaged in fostering the Church for the last twelve months •, duritig which period a 10 Parsonage house has been built, the Burial ground inclosed, and some improvements efTected in the Parish Church ; in addition to which a very considerable enlargement of the sacred Edifice is now in progress. With these works on their hands during the past year, the Committee, though sorry, cannot acknowledge themselves ashamed of the small* ness of their contribution, {£9 6s. lO^d.) At the meeting of this Committee on the 15ih January, it was re- solved to solicit assistance from the Society to an enlargement already commenced, which, besides adding a Chancel to the Church, will afford ninety or one hundred new sittings. The frame of this addition will be raised and boarded in by the 20th instant. DOUQLAS. The Reverend John Dunn, who has very recently assumed the charge of this Parish, writes that he found it in circum* stances which seemed to render it inexpedient to attempt this year a general collection for the Society ; and consequently the amount of its contribution will be small. A long destitution of Pastoral care has necessarily proved injurious to the flock, reduced its numbers, and cooled the zeal of many. The present demands upon the few who have the interests of the Church at heart are very weighty and urgent. A Parsonage House has to be built, and of the two Churches which the Parish contains, one is incomplete, and the other requires repair. And these extraordinary demands are to be supplied at a time when the scarcity of money is universally felt. He hopes therefore that the course pursued will not be attributed to indifference or abated interest in the objects of ih'i Society, either on the part of the Missionary or on that of the people. The Committee thankfully acknowledge the recent grant of Books to the amount of Five Pounds. The Committee would respectfully represent that there is in Douglas a great dearth of Prayer Books and Books in which Church principles are taught ; and earnestly solicit an increase of the Parochial Lending Library, and Books suitable for a Sunday School. They hope too that, considering the many and urgent wants of this mission, they will not be deemed unreasonable in asking aid to complete the Chapel in the upper part of the Keswick Settlement, and add a Vestry Room thereto. 11 GLENELG. This Committee met on Saint Stephcn^s Day, December 26, imme- diately aAer Divine Service in the Parish Church ; when the following Resolutions were adopted : 1. That the Members of this Meeting have Heard with much thank- fulness to Almighty God, that the Church Society of New Brunswick continues in a prosperous state, and that its past exertions to promote Christian knowledge throughout " the neglected Settlements" have been in some measure at least successfully crowned. 2. That the fact of the Church Society being a Missionary Society, n Bible Society, a Prayer Book Society, a Religious Tract Society, a Church Building Society, and a Sunday School Society, should con- stitute a very powerful appeal to all who prize the faith of Christ, as professed by the Reformed British Catholic Church, to contribute gladly and liberally to the timely support of that Institution. 3. That a moiety of " The Offertory" collected in this Church du- ring the present year, be immediately transmitted to ihe Treasurer of the Church Society, and that the same be limited towards the building of Churches and Chapels. 4. That the Visiting Missionary (Reverend James Hudson) be re- quested, in the name of the Local Committee, to make an early appli- cation to the Executive Committee of the Society for pecuniary aid towards providing the great blessing of a House of God in the large, scattered, and religiously destitute Parish of Nelson, in this Province. CARLETON. _ The Reverend F. Coster (Secretary of the Society) writes, that on the evening of the day preceding that appointed for the meeting of this Local Committee, he fell and sprained his ancle so severely that the meeting was of necessity postponed, in consequence of which his return cannot be in time. FREDERICTON. The Local Committee of this Parish held a Meeting on the 8th Ja- nuary, at which were present some of the Non-commissioned Officers of the 52d Regiment, who contributed last year so handsomely to the funds of the Society. The following Resolutions were passed : 1. That the Committee have no special object to recommend to the consideration of tho General Committee for the benefit of Fredericton 12 and its vicinity, except that it may particlpatn in the next importation of Books and Tracts, and that the allotment may include Books, which, together with those already in their possession, may form a small Re- ligious Lending Library. 2. That Mark Needham, Esquire, and Dr. Robb, be the Lay Depu- ties to the General Committee. These are tho Returns upon which the Executive Committee had to frame their Report ; and they are happy to have again to say that they have not found in any of them the slightest complaint against their management of the business intrusted to them. The Report from Chatham contains a suggestion from that Local Committee, which it is presumed the Society will readily adopt, unless a better way of an- swering the same purpose should be proposed. It will however bo impossible while the importation of the Society is so limited in extent, and nearly the whole continues to be distributed within the year, to guard entirely against disappointment by any arrangement that can be adopted. The best which occurs is, that the Executive Committee should fix the amount to which each Local Committee shall have a claim as soon as possible after the General Meeting ; and the order not be made out until the several Committees shall have signified in what sort of Books they would severally desire to receive their appropriations. The Visiting iVIissionaries have been employed during the year in tlie stations originally allotted to them. In the Miramichi District, the scene of the Reverend Mr. Hudson^s strenuous exertions, another Church, in addition to two already erected, is about to be undertaken ; and the Society's aid is solicited for it by the Committees of Chatham and Glenelg. In the Reverend Mr. Thomson's District, two Churches are making progress; but the precise state of them is at pro- sent unknown to them. Mr. Hudson has drawn for travelling ex- penses since the last General Meeting, £37 ; and Mr. Thomson for £20 18». The Books and Tracts imported during the year 1843 cost £100 sterling, and out of these and the residue of former importations, grants have been supplied amounting in tho whole to i^lOG ICig. Qd. The Secretary reports that all the lust grants made by the Execu- tive Committee have been applied for, und hij furnish*] one of .£3. -•xccpt 13 Out uf the .£80, allotted last year to the building and enlarging of Churches and Chapels, seven appropriations were made, of which £21 I3s. 4(2. have been drawn on certiHcates that the condition of each grant has been complied with. To that is to be added ;f 90, paid to satisfy existing claims, making a total of £111 13«. Ad. The un> paid grants to Churches stand thus, viz., Nelson (two grants together), £25 ; Richmond, i£lO ; Tobique, ^15 ; Mugundy, i£10 ; Canning, £15. Total not yet called upon, £15. The income of the year 1843 was i^308 12s. Gd. The balance in the Treasurer's hands February 1, 1844, exclusive of the Visiting Missionary Fund, .£118 5s. 9d. The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel have not appropriated any part of the £250, placed last year at their disposal by this Society. In reply to our pressing application for the supply of additional Cler- gymen, the Secretary has written to the Archdeacon, commending the efforts making in this Province for the support and «;xtension of the Church, and regretting that this Society, with an expenditure largely exceeding its income, has been unable to afford a larger amount of assistance. They will however, so far as their funds allow, always be ready to second the exertions which are made in the Colony. He added, that a Clergyman had lately sailed from England, who would, he hoped, be sent to New Brunswick, for which he lamented that so few labourers had been engaged during the last ten years. The Cler* gyman alluded to is the Kcverend £. Roberts, now stationed at Fredericton. That the Subscriptions will fall short this year of what they have been seems but too probable. The Committee understand however that ill many of the Parishes of the Archdeaconry, a great deal has Lnen contributed for local Church objeots. Perhr.ps it might be ad visablu that the Society should request those of the Clergy who are favorable to the Society, to preach in its behalf on some early day ufier they shall have received the printed Reports, in their several Churclies, and solicit the contributions of the people on the occasion in addition to their subscriptions, and report the result as soon as may be convenient afterwards. From several of the Parishes an application has been made for aid to add a Tower to the Church. But a question has been occasionally raised in the Executive Committee, whether such an addition be such an enlargement of th« Church as the Society contemplates. This 14 question we therefore recommend to the decision of the General Committee. (Signed) E. J. W. ROBERTS, Sec^y. to the Executive Committee. The General Committee then took into consideration the reference made by the Executive Committee, whether the addition of a Tower be such an enlargement of a Church as is contemplated by the Rule, and decided that it is not. Resolved^ That the sum of Eighty Pounds be placed at the disposal of the Executive Committee, for the building and enlarging of Churches and Chapels, and that it be an instruction to the Committee to comply« as near as may be, with the reconamendations of the several Local Committees. Resolvedj That the sum of One Hundred and Sv.xty Pounds be placed at the disposal of the Executive Committee, for the purchase of a Bill of Exchange, to be remitted to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, for a supply of Books and Tracts. Resolved^ That the General Committee do recommend to the General Meeting the adoption of the following regulation, in compliance with the wish expressed by the Executive Committee, viz., that the Execu* tive Committee be requested to make the division of the appropriation for Books as early as possible, and that for this purpose the Committee do meet on Monday next ; and that information be sent to the Clergy, connected with the Local Committees to whom grants may be made, of the amount granted to them respectively, together with a list of the Books to be included in the order for importation, with a request that they will select therefrom such Books as they may prefer to the amount granted them respectively, and forward their lists to the Se- cretary in time to be in his hands by the 1st of April.
