 On retiring from office, the Committee of ^NFanagcment are de- 
 sirous of placing before the Members a brief account of their 
 administration of the affairs of the Society during their term. 
 One of the first duties of your Committee was to carry out the 
 often expressed wish of the Society in procuring a Diploma and 
 Seals. The work has been well executed by ^lessrs. Standidge, 
 of London, and the diploma* are now signed and ready for deli- 
 very to such Members as are not in arrears this day. St. 
 George's Day was celebrated by the Society attending Divine 
 Service. Prayers were read in the Cathedral by the Revd. Geo. 
 Mackie, D. D., and an excellent sermon delivered by the Revd. 
 A. W. Mountain, 13. A. An admirable musical service was 
 performed by the late S. Codman, assisted by the ladies and 
 gentlemen of the voluntary choir. The collection on the occa- 
 sion amoinitedto £14 lUs. After .service, the Society marched 
 to Ru.ssell's Hall to witness the presentation by the Right 
 Revd. Lord lli.shop of Quebec, (Patron of tha Society,) on behalf 
 of the Members, of a gold watch and chain to Robt. Symes, 
 Ksq., as an acknowledgment of his services as Treasurer to the 
 Society for a term of l(> years.* Owing to the small number 
 of Members offering to subscribe, there was no dinner on St. 
 George's Day. 
 
 The Report of the sub-Committee of Charity will prove to 
 Members that the Society has not been backward in attbrding 
 
 * Connected with that pleasing circumstance, Mr. Symes presented to 
 the Society, a collection of its Records, from the foundation of the Society 
 1835, to the end of the year 18.51, carefully arrautjed and bound into three 
 Volumes. Those books are valuable, contaiuingusthey do, all the early pro- 
 ceedings and the names of the Originators of the Institution, with'^niuch 
 other curious information connected with the Society. Mr. Symes presented 
 three Seta which are placed in the custody of the President, Secretary 
 and Ti-easurcr, for the time being, open to the inspection of any Member 
 upon application to any of the above named officers, and to be handed 
 over to their successors in office for ever ; a fourth Set of the same docu- 
 ments Mr. S. has retained in his possession. The papers above alluded to are 
 the more valuable in consequence of the loBS by Fire of the greater part 
 of the early proceedings of the Society.

 He died on the l'.)th July, 1852, at the age of SCi years, rcgrf'ttcd by a 
 large circle of friends, to whom ho was ondciared by liis amiable disposi- 
 tion and affable deportment. 
 
 fStephen Codnian dietl on the 6tli October, 1852, nged 50 years. He 
 was a native of Norwich, l-'.ngland, where he received his Musical Ivhiea- 
 tiou under we celebrate<l Dr. Heckwith. For the last Wd years he was 
 Organi-t of tlie Cathedial Church of this City, he possessed miisical talent 
 of the highest oi'der, united with refined taste, as is abundantly evinced 
 by liis coni])ositii'ns; and his ])owers of perform.'uu'i' were <'(jual to his 
 natural gifts. But he was distinguished not for iirofessional ability only : 
 for the pursuits of litei'ature he displaycil a keen relish and a cultivati'd 
 taste, and his memory will ho long cherished by a numerous ciich^ of 
 friends to wliom he endeared himself hy his many excellent ((ualities.

 the elioir sang with solemn effect to tht^ burial hymn, " Dust unto Dust."

 j^oeiety, being among the followers, and to j)erpetuate the resi)ect of the 
 'I'ongregation for his memory, the Select "N'estry have erected a Jbirblo

 REPORT OF THE SIT.-COIMMITTKE OF CHARITY 
 
 The CharitnMc Committee of the St. Coorge's Society in 
 making the usual statement of its j^occediiigs at the close of 
 the period for which they were elected to conduct that depart- 
 ment, hep to congratulate the ]\I embers on the continued jn-os- 
 perity of the Institution, and of the future prospect of a long 
 extended sphere of uscfulncai. 
 
 The Cunnnittee have to report that they have granted relief 
 to forty applicants during the past year, among whom a sum of 
 £711 lis. 4d., has been distributed. This amount of assist- 
 ance, as the ( 'ommittee feel assured, has been rendered in 
 every instance, to i)arties who were considered as having a 
 just claim on the fiuids of the Society, and worthy to parti- 
 cipate in the benefits which it confers. 
 
 Among the i)crsons relieved are several sailors who were 
 discharged as convalescent, from the Marine and Emigrant 
 Hospital, in the course of the season of Navigation. These 
 cases have formed a considerable charge on the I'unds of the 
 Society, at the disposal of the Charitable (onnnittee. as, 
 although convalcscnt, the men were in all cases unfit for duty 
 and unable to work. 
 
 The Committee would strongly recommend to i\l embers the 
 necessity of being very cautious in signing applications for 
 relief, iii order that the funds of the Society may be judiciously 
 applied.

 Treasurer of the St. George's Society, 
 
 FOR 
 
 THE YEAR 1852. 
 
 In presenting the Seventeenth Annual Account of the Finances 
 of the St. (Jcorge's Society, the Treasurer has much pleasure 
 in advertinjj; to the steady increase of its resources, more par- 
 ticularly as exhibited in the increase of the I'c i manent Fund, 
 and that notwithstanding that the usual expense* of the Society 
 have been largely augmented this year. 
 
 The increase of the Fund this year has been £28 13s. 4d., 
 and the total amount is now fljJJDo lis (Id.— fil.oOO of which 
 ii invested in Hank Stocks and other Securities, and £5 14s. Od. 
 is deposited in the Saving's Hank. 
 
 The receipts from the Annual Subscriptions, Donations, and 
 Entrance IVcs during the past year have been £44 lOs. — £5 
 of which is due to the liberality of William Jackson, Esq., M. 
 P. The Treasurer must, ho'./cver, draw the attention of the 
 Members to the large amount of subscriptions outstanding, an 
 amount which is annually increasing, to the prejudice of the 
 interests of the Society. 
 
 The largo increase which has taken place in the expenses 
 incurred during the past, arises from the Resolution of the 
 Society that Diplomas of IMembcrship should be furnished to 
 the .Members — the cost of the jilate and of <j*)(» copies of the 
 J)iplomas. with two seals engraved on steel has been £4!) 8s. 9d. 
 cy.; notwithstanding the large increase of the usual expenses of 
 the Society, the object for which the Society has been formed 
 has not been interfiered with, £71» I4s. 4d. having been ex- 
 pended in aiding and assisting those of our brethren who have 
 called upon the Society for aid.
