Deputy Minister of Inland Revenue. Sir, — I have the honour to forv.ard you herewitli a report upon the examination of 152 samples of Olive Oil, purcha.sed by our inspectors throughout Canada in April of this year. Of this number 139 samples are found to lie genuine, and 13 »ample» are adulterated under the terms of ti.e Act. The adulteration consists in every case of an admixture of Cotton Seed Oil, 'an inferior or cheaper substance' (iSec. 3 (h), without declaration of this fact (Sec. 3 (d). It appears from cori-espondence had with iiuporters and vendors, that in some cases this article has been sold in good faith, as believed to be genuine Olive Oil. It is imported for the most part, in sealed containers, and apparently represented as Olive Oil. While this fact seems to exculpate the immediate vendors from any charge of intent to defraud, it does not warrant me in describing the samples as other than adulterated under the Act. Olive < )il lias been collected and examined on four different occasions, with the following results : — Hnlletii! l)Ht.'. iKsn 19(6 litllH mil Total Samples. 40 IMi l>4 13!l A.lnl t.
