The Midland District Agprlcnltural Society 
 
 Hdd their Adjourned Meeting at Bath^ on Tuesday the 
 2bth July, 1837, whe-% the following CONSTITUTION 
 was agreed upon. . ■ , 4 
 
 Whereas an Act was passed in the first Session of the 
 Provincial Parliament for the encouragement of Agriculture, 
 in which it is provided that whenever the sum of twenty-five 
 pounds or upwards shall have heen raised by Subscription?, 
 by Agricultural Societies in any District, a bounty of double 
 the sum actually subscribed and paid shall be allowed by Go- 
 vernment : Wherefore to assist in carrying more fully into 
 effect the judicious views of the Legislature for the general 
 improvement of the Province, the Society heretofore estab- 
 lished and designated by the name of the Midland District 
 Agricultural Society, be and is hereby continued by the name 
 and designation of The Midland Distbict Agricultural 
 Society, conformably to the following ^ 
 
 Mule^ an^ Kesulatfon:^. 
 
 1st. That the affairs of this Society shall be conducted by 
 a General Board, composed of the President, Recording and 
 Corresponding Secretaries, Treasurer, together with the Vice 
 Presidents and Directors of County Boards, to be chosen 
 once a year from among the members at their general Annual 
 Meeting, to be held at Bath on the first Tuesday in May in 
 each and every year. 
 
 2d. The General Board of Directors, either by order of 
 the President, or upon a requisition made by any three mem- 
 bers of the Board, to the .Recording Secretary in writing, 
 shall, at any time after their election, meet at such times and 
 places as may be deemed expedient, any four of whom, toge- 
 ther with the President, or in his absence one of the Vice 
 Presidents, shall form a quorum to do business. The Vice 
 Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurer shall be ex-officio Di- 
 rectors. All questions shall be decided by a majority of votes, 
 and in case of an equal division upon any question discussed 
 at such meetings, the presiding officer shall have a casting 
 vote. 
 
 3d. It shall be the duty of the Recording Secretary to give 
 notice of all meetings of the General Board, called by the Pres- 
 ident, or upon the requisition of any ^r <i Directors, giving

 at least. ten days' previous notice thereof In one or more of 
 the newspa|)ers of the District. He shall also keep regular 
 minutes of the proceedings of each meeting in a book provi- 
 ded foi the purpose. The Corresponding Secretary will com- 
 municate with and forward to the Secretaries of other Agri- 
 cultural Societies within the Province, or elsewhere, if requi- 
 red, the Rules and Regulations of the Society, and such other 
 information respecting its proceedings as shall from time to 
 time be thought advisable by the General Board expressed 
 to that' officer at any of its meetings. 
 
 4th. It shall be the duty of the Treasurer to receive and 
 pay all monies belonging to the Society under the direction 
 of the General Board, and to furnish a regular account of the 
 same at the General Annual Meeting of the Society, or when- 
 ever called upon at any meeting of the General Board. 
 
 6th. The whole of the money received from Government 
 conformably to the existing Statute, and also all subscriptions 
 obtained within the Town of Kingston, shall be under the 
 control and at the disposal of the General Board, to be by it 
 exclusively<«appropriated to objects connected with the lilSti- 
 tution, in conformity with its Rules and the Act of the Legis- 
 lature. 
 
 6th. County Boards shall be established, consisting of two 
 Vice Presidents and seven Directors, with authority to choose 
 their County Treasurer and Secretary, to collect and appro- 
 ))riate the sums subscribed within their respective Counties, 
 to appoint Cattle Shows, Ploughing Matches, Inspection of 
 Farms and Crops, and to award Premiums to successful com- 
 petitors to any amount not exceeding the sum subscribed 
 within the County. One of the Vice Presidents, or in the 
 absence of a Vice President, one of the Directors shall pre- 
 side at their meetings. Those County Boards shall also have 
 the right to make and ordain their own Bye-Laws, provided 
 these are not inconsistent with the existing Statute, and the 
 General Rules and Regulations of the District Society, to 
 whose Secretary a copy of their Bye-Laws shall be trans- 
 mitted. 
 
 7th. That there may be no disappointment of the hopes 
 entertained by the Legislature in the improvement of Agri- 
 culture throughout the Province, it is needful that the several 
 Branch Societies in the District be supported with that de- 
 gree of steadiness and zeal which the subject merits by all 
 those whose interests are more immediately promoted by it, 
 vjz. "the farmers," who, with the friends to Agricultural im-

provements, will compose the members. A Subscription of 
 Ten Shiulimos per annum shall constitute a member. The 
 General Board n^ay also nominate o£Gicers of other Agricultu- 
 ral Societies and individuals who have by their writings or 
 othery^ise contributed to the improvement of agriculture, to 
 be honorary members of this Society. 
 
 8th. The Directors residing in the several Townships shall 
 receive the subscriptions for their respective counties, and 
 pay over the same to their County Treasurer, who shall 
 transmit the amount so paid to the District Treasurer, with a 
 list of the subscribers, on or before the 35th day of August in 
 each year. Persons who do not pay their subscriptions on 
 or before the third Monday in August in each year, cannot 
 be i&dmitted as members for that year. 
 
 9th. The District Treasurer shall make up a Return of the 
 sums subscribed and paid by the different Counties on or be- 
 fore the 1st day of September in each year, and deliver the 
 said Return to the President in the form prescribed by law. 
 
 10th. The President shall sign his approval to the Return, 
 and forthwith make his application for the Government Boun- 
 ty, to be applied conformably to Rule 5th. 
 
 11th. Besides the Cattle Shows, Ploughing Matches, and 
 Inspection of Crops, made and appointed under the direction 
 of the County Boards, there shall be annually one District 
 Show, at such time and place as may be agreed upon by the 
 General Board, to be under the management and direction of 
 the General Board, and where successful competitors at the 
 County Show will have the privilege of entering the same 
 stock as competitors for a District Prize. 
 
 12th. At all exhibitions three Judges shall be required to 
 award premiums ; these Judges to be members of the Society 
 but not competitors. 
 
 13th. The names of successful candidates, and the pre- 
 miums thiey have received, and for what received, together 
 with the proceediiigs of each meeting, whether of the Coun- 
 ty or of the District Boards, shall be published in the news- 
 papers, under the superinteudence of the Recording Secreta- 
 ry to the Society. 
 
 14th. As soon as it may be found practicable, a Library 
 s^jE^ll b^. formed for the use of the Society, to consist of tl^e 
 vap&i approved and useful works on agriculture and domestic 
 economy. Donations of Books suitable to such Library shall 
 be received with due acknowledgment by the General Board.

 16th. These Rules and Regulations shall not be altered or 
 amended except at General Meetings of the SoQiety.

 bursed for all incidental expenses that they may incur ia the 
 execution of their office.

 Resolved, That with the view of encouraging useful expe- 
 riments, and of ascertaining more accurately the real value of 
 such experiments, whether in the raising of stock, or in the 
 cultivation of the soil, competitors for premiums shall, previ- 
 ous to any Agricultural Show or Inspection of Crops, intimate 
 in writing to the Secretary of the Society, their intention to 
 compete ; and at the same time specify the description of 
 stock which they intend to exhibit, and the kind of produce 
 which they intend to submit for inspection.

 Resolved, That on the application for the entry of any 
 description of stock at any County or District Show, the ap- 
 plication must be accompanied by an authenticated statement 
 of the age and pedigree of the animal so to be entered, the 
 manner in whidh it has been fed, the value and quantity of 
 food it has consumed ; and it will also be gratifying to the 
 Society to receive any observations from competitors, show- 
 ing the comparative superiority of one mode of^treatment oyer

 another, so as to exhibit the greatest improvement at the least 
 expense.

 Resolvedf That every competitor for a. premium on the best 
 cultivated field or farm, shall, previous to the inspection of 
 the same by any committee appointed for that purpose, deli- 
 ver to such committee a written statement, as nearly as may 
 be, of the number of years since such field or farm was first 
 cleared, the quantity and value per acre of the three previous 
 crops, with an account of expenditure and income for each 
 successive year. 
 
 Mr. Pringle also submitted a scheme of management for 
 the more efficient expenditure of statute labor, and for laying 
 out and keeping in repair the highways and roads in each 
 Township in this Province, which document was referred to 
 a committee, consisting of Messrs. Pringle, Eraser, Clarke 
 and Church, to consider and report thereon at the next gen- 
 eral meeting. 
 
 Moved by the President, and seconded by Isaac Eraser, 
 Esq. 
 
 Resolved, that the Corresponding Secretary be directed to 
 acknowledge the receipt of the communication of Major Lach- 
 Un, President of the Western District Agricultural and Hor- 
 ticultural Society, of the 14th May, 1837, with the thanks of 
 this Society for the honor conferred upon its officers, and to 
 request that the same officers in their Society be, and are here- 
 by invited to become Honorary Members of the Midland Dis- 
 tnct Agricultural Society, and that a printed copy of the Con- 
 stitution of this Society be transmitted to the Secretary of 
 the Western District Agricultural 9ud Horticultural Society.
