 Considering the expense and difficulties of publishing a separate 
 Directory of this city every etfort has been made that was possible, 
 to insure accuracy, and being the first work of the kind undertaken 
 in Vancouver, the indulgence of business people generally is request- 
 ed, with the assurance that the next issue will no doubt be an im- 
 provement on this one. The price is reasonable, and we trust that it 
 will be acceptable to the citizens generally.

 fflflTUATED on aa extensive and wonderfully beautiful site for a 
 (55^ large city, as it is possible for one to fonceive. The contour of 
 the land combined with the fact that the soil is of a light sandy 
 nature, naturally affords excellent drainage, which is one of the many 
 important advantages this growing place possesses. The general 
 view from any stand point is magnificent, and presents to the eye a 
 varied and beautiful sight. The more elevated portions overlook the 
 extensive land locked harbor to the eastward, while to the westward 
 is seen the roadstead of English Bay stretching far out towards the 
 Gulf of Georgia. The scenery is grand in every particular and is' 
 sure to please the lover of mountain scenery or one seeking the many 
 other varied and beautiful scenes that are in succession, as it were, 
 in grand panoramic style placed before the delighted beholder. The 
 peninsula portion or Coal Harbor frontage is that on which the 
 greater part of this rapidly growing city is at present built, consisting 
 of a very large area almost divided by an extensive Arm of the sea 
 stretching inland rrom English Bay for a distance of nearly two 
 miles. This placid water named " False Grsek " is extensively used 
 by mill owners for anchoring booms of logs in its secure land locked 
 waters and for manufacturing and saw mill sites and the extensive 
 works of the C. P. R. car shops and round houses. It is spanned by 
 two bridges, one abutting on Westminster avenue while the other is 
 the C P. R. railway bridge connecting Vancouver proper with English 
 Bay. The general progress of this city has been a surprise to many 
 ana her growth in the future, if it is to be judged by that of the past 
 will be marvelous. 
 
 As early as 1882 the issue of the B. C. Directory for that year 
 predicted to a great extent the future progress that Burrard Inlet 
 would make and at this juncture the description then published is 
 very applicable and will b^ar repeating.

 " Burrard Inlet, the principal harbor of the mainland of British 
 Columbia, is situated some thirteen miles north of the entrance of 
 Fraser river, having for land marks. Point Grey on the south and 
 Point Atkinson on the north, on which latter a revolving light is 
 placed. The Inlet is the chief centre of the great lumber interests of 
 the New Westminster district. Of the different varieties of wood, 
 which are converted into lumber here, we may mention the two which

 make up the greater proportion, viz. : Douj^las Fir (abies douiflasai) 
 and Ceuar (thuja gigantea). The former, which has gained a world- 
 wide fame, for its great strength and durability under all tests, is the 
 staple article of the lumber trade on this coast, and is fortunately 
 very abundant. This tree grows from one hundred to three hundred 
 feet high, and reaches a diameter of eight feet or more. The prin- 
 cipal ports of shipment are Australia, South America, China, Japan, 
 Sandwich Islands and South Africa. Besides suwn lumber, spars 
 form no inconsiderable part of the trade of this port. Until within the 
 last few years no systematic attempt has been made to utilize, as a 
 profitable industry, the vast number of fish found in these waters. 
 Recently, however, manufacturies are being established for procuring 
 the oil from herrings, oolachans and other fish which during the winter 
 and spring months, give employment to quite a number of white men 
 and Indians. But this industry is only in its infancy ; and as salmon, 
 halibut, cod, whiting, smelt and tom cod are to be found here in no 
 inconsiderable numbers, with the increasing encouragement for new 
 enterprises which must neces.sarily follow with increased population, 
 the export of fish, fish oil and fish guano, will doubtless take a 
 prominent part in the future trade of this port. Although Burrard 
 Inlet has for years played no second part as an industrial portion of 
 British CSolumbia, it ha.s within the last year, received a new impetus, 
 from the fact that the terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway has 
 been located here. The Inlet is twenty miles long from its mouth to 
 the head of the North Ai^n, and twelve miles to the head of the 
 South Arm ; with a width, varying from one hundred and fifty yards 
 to two and a half miles, affording safe anchorage, over a greater part 
 of this area, for the largest ships afloat Objection has been made to 
 Burrard Inlet as a harbor of easy access, from the fact that the tide 
 near its entrance marks as high as eight knots an hour, but this 
 rate is only attained at its strongest ebb, and it is not an unusual 
 thing for ships to come to anchor inside, aided by sail alone. The 
 scenery of Burrard Inlet is very tine, and a trip up the harbor, 
 especially if taken at the time of year (June) at which our observa- 
 tions were made, is one of varied interest A range of mountains, 
 their sides for the greater part of their elevation densely covered with 
 the different varieties of forest trees peculiar to this northwest coast, 
 skirts the northern shore throughout Towering above the surround- 
 ing heights of this range are the twin |)eaks whose snow covered 
 summits casting their shadows almost over Moodyville, form a beau- 
 tiful back ground to that little hive of industi-y. On the south the 
 country is comparatively level, and from the waters edge, as far back 
 as the eye can, reach, stands the almost inpenetrable forest, the ever 
 changing colors of foliage, as the mountain breeze tosses it in and

 coming through the narrow passage at its eiitrance, the harl)or 
 stretches to a width of two and a half inile.s. To our right is Coal 
 Harbor with the town of *Granville on its eastern boundary, centrally 
 situated, containing a nunil>er of general stores, hotels and churches, 
 and occupying a level and beautiful spot connected by a good road 
 with New VVestminater. A quarter of a mile further on is the estab- 
 lishment of the Hastings Saw Mill Company, with its inces.sant rattle 
 of machinery and clouas of escaping steam. Opposite, on the northern 
 bank, stands the white cottages and simple church of the Indian 
 (Catholic) Mission. Steaming on we pass, on the .same side, the town 
 of Mootlyville, where again the buzz of .saws, the hum of innumerable 
 drums and pulleys, and the noise of shifting lumber as it sweeps 
 down the incline.s through the ports of the different ships, greets our 
 ears. Three miles from *Granville, nestling aniong the green foliage 
 which skirts the southern bank, is the village of Hastings, from which 
 point a morning and evening line of stages carries the traveller across 
 the narrow peninsula to New Westminster, nine miles distant. 
 Passing Hastings, we almost immediately enter the second narrows, 
 and four miles further on, we reach the North Arm of the Inlet, a 
 stretch of water twelve miles long and from a quarter of a mile to 
 two miles wide. Along the shores of the North Arm few signs of 
 civilization are to be met v/ith, and with the exception of one or two 
 settlers near its mouth, this portion of the Inlet remains in its almost 
 primitive wildness. On the 12th of June, 1792, Capt. George Van- 
 couver on a voyage of discovery round the world, anchored nis- two 
 ships — the British sloop of war, "Discovery," and armed tender, 
 " Chatham " — in Birch bay and proceeded in open boats to explore 
 the line of coast nnd waters to the north. Rounding Point Grey he 
 sailed up the Inlet to within half a league of its head, where, anchor- 
 ing his boats for the night, he took possession in the name of the 
 British Government, calling it after Sir Harry Biirrard of the navy. 
 A new state of things is about to be inaugurated ; and taking into 
 consideration the fact, that a great city must necessarily mark the 
 western resting place of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the amount 
 of trade and commerce which such a place will eventually create, and 
 as Burrard Inlet, with all its natural advantages, its wealth of lumber 
 and with an inexhaustable store of coal and iron within a few hours 
 sail, has been chosen for this location, it may not be drawing too 
 much on the imagination to picture its shores peopled with an eager 
 and active population. Two miles from the mouth of the North Arm, 
 we reach Port Moody, and looking back, an almost unbroken line of 
 sight, reaches to the mouth of the harbor ten miles away."

 GENERAL PROGRESS. 
 
 That which was written in 1882 has been realized to a greal 
 extent and is only a quention of a very short time when the whole 
 shore line of Burrard Inlet will be peopled with a vast population as 
 before predicted and Vancouver will extend so that Hastings (George 
 Black's) will be absorbed in the city proper just as the Hastings mill 
 site has at the present time. Tho writer visited Vancouver wnen it 
 was known as Granville :»im^ his visits have been yearly or more fre- 
 quent since. Any one who has watched the progress of this prosperous 
 port of Canada on the Paciiic cannot fail to be impressed with her 
 grand situation and every surrounding that help to make a great 
 city. The time will come in a very few years when the farmers on 
 the vast agricultural lands of the great prairie section will tind an 
 outlet in Vancouver. This fact added to a quarter of a million acres 
 of Delta and other excellent lands at her very door, pltices her in a 
 most enviable position amongst the cities of this great North West 
 
 GENERAL PROGRESS. 
 
 There has been wonderful progress made throughout the city, as 
 the large expenditure will prove. It has been estimated that during 
 the past twelve months (1887) about Si ,600,000 was expended in 
 buildings, which is a most gratifying showing. The departure and 
 arrival of passengers and the almost constant noise of the moving 
 trains, both local and eastern, gives a busy appearance to Vancouver, 
 leaving twice a day for New Westminster, via Port Moody. The 
 distance by this route is about 25 miles, although in a direct line New 
 Westminster is only ab> ut 10 miles distant. Under the following 
 headings care has oeen used to do ample justice in describing the 
 many mdustries and general points of interest in and about the city. 
 
 The City was incorporated April 6th, 1886, and was fast becom- 
 ing a place of great importance when the unfortunate and disastrous fire 
 occurred in the following June, devastating the entire city, leaving 
 only three houses remaining, but since then by the enterprise and 
 business energy of the citizens it has progressed with extraordinary 
 rapidity, untifto-day, within twenty months of its destruction, there 
 now exists a city with an estimated population of 6,000 with over 
 1,000 houses, 40 miles of planked roads and sidewalks, a number of 
 extensive brick warehouses (wholesale and retail) and offices, the elec- 
 tric light and gas works, a city hall, a very effective system of drain- 
 age, its water works under construction, a well organized and equip- 
 ped fire and hook ladder brigade, two iron foundries, six p: • / mills 
 all doing a lucrative business, soap works, lime kiln, three ^ uttered 
 banks and one private bank, a large number of well-appointu'! .fcels.

 several incorporated societies, five churches, including Episcopalian, 
 Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist, a public school, several 
 influential private ' 'hools, a public reading room and library, a well- 
 appointed opera house, and amidst all this extraordinary commercial 
 progress the citizens have found means and time to enjoy their leisure 
 moments in the formation of rowing, cricket, fo'^+>»«',ll, chess and ama- 
 teur dramatic clubs, all being largely support' , and a recreatio|i 
 ground. The corporation is now laying out an ext»!;isive park where 
 one can enjoy the delightful climate and picturesque surrounding 
 scenery. A site on Cambie street for the Ju'>i ae H ^spita' has been 
 purchnfivd by the Council and shortly will be comm'-nccl a handsome 
 structure worthy of the newly created city, at a cost of $25,000. 
 
 The medical officer of the Board of Health, Di'. J, M. Lefevre, in 
 his fiscal report for the year 1887, shows conclusl '^ely that the climate 
 of Vancouver is salubrious. 
 
 Amongst the principal brick buildings completed may be mention- 
 ed the Post Office Block on Hastings street, where the business of the 
 post office is conducted, and also the real estate agency of Messrs. Ross 
 & Ceperley ; the Wilson Block on Cordova street, occupied by several 
 commercial firms, the Tatlow Block, Mr. T. Dunns store, Cordova 
 street, the Innes Block, Hpstings street, the Lady Stephen's Block, 
 the London House on Cordova street, and Byrnes Block on Water 
 street, the Bank buildings on Hastings St., the C. P. R. Hotel on Gran- 
 ville street, the Hamilton & Wulffsohn block occupied by the private 
 banking firm of Bewicke & Wulflfsohn, amounting in all to about 41, 
 and others in course of erection. The following description of the 
 various manufactories and incorporate societies with the numeious 
 names in the directory — which is larger than that published in 1871, 
 which embraced the entire province — will show more adequately the 
 progress Vancouver has made since the calamity of 1886 : 
 
 MAYOR AND COUNCIL.

 phries, (ward three) Henry Bell-Irving, Robert Clark, (ward four)

 heimer, Robert Couth. City Clerk, Thos. F. McGuigan ; Treasurer 
 and Assessor, G. F. Baldwin; Auditor, John Devine; Engineer, J. P. 
 Lawson ; Coroner, Dr. McGuigan ; Police Magistrate and City Solici- 
 tor, T. T. Bkck. Offices in City Hall, Powell Street. 
 
 The following loans have been contracted by the Council: 
 $150,000 borrowed at 6 per cent., floated at par for street 
 improvements, hospital, fire department and sewerage ; $20,000 at 6 per 
 cent, floated at par for constructing a driving park seven or eight

 miles round the Inlet. To the present time $60,000 have been ex 
 expended in streets and roads (40 miles of plankling), $10,000 in 
 grading and gravelling, $25,000 in sewerage, $15,000 for the tire de- 
 partment, including building, engines, etc., and $5,000 for the City 
 Hall. 
 
 The Council have voted $25,000 as a bonus for the erection of 
 smelting works. Several applications are now being considered. 
 The Council have also exempted from taxation for the period of thirty 
 years the extensive works of the C. P. R., and for a period of ten 
 years the Vancouver City Iron Works. 
 
 The City's Assessment. — The following information is taken from 
 the report submitted to the Council February 6th, 1888, by the As- 
 sessment Commissioner, Mr. George F. Baldwin: Real property, 
 $3,471,245 ; personal property. $204,660 ; total, $8,675,905. An in- 
 crease of nearly $1,000,000 over last year. The population, as 
 near as can be ascertained, is 6,085. 
 
 Vancouver Water Works.— First survej-^ December, 1885. In- 
 corporated April, 1886. This company have just commenced the 
 construction of the water works and the contract is given to Mes.sr.s. 
 Keefer & McGillivray. Directors : Hon. J. W. Trutch, C. M G,, 
 Thos. Earle, John Irving, R. P. Rithet, D. M. Eberts ; secretary-treas- 
 urer, J. W. McFarland ; solicitor, D, M. Eberts, Esq.; chief engineer, 
 G. A. Keefer, M. I. C. E.; resident engineer, H. B. Smith, C. E. Offices 
 Alexander street, Vancouver. Capital stock $250,000. Water is being 
 taken from Capilano river, 6^ miles north of tiie first narrows of Bu/- 
 rard Inlet. At this point a dam 360 feet long and 15 feet above bed 
 of river will be constructed, forming a magnificent reservoir. From 
 the Jam the water will be conveyed a distance of 2^ miles by a 22-inch 
 steel rivetted main. This 22-inch pipe will connect with a 16-inch 
 steel rivetted main which will carry the water to the first Narrows. 
 The crossing of the Narrows will be eftected bv means of Ward's 
 flexible cast iron pipes; two parallel rows twelve inches in 
 diameter and lA inches thick will be laid on the bottom of the Inlet. 
 A 16-inch steel-rivetted main will connect on the south side of the 
 Narrows, which will carry the water across the Government Reserve 
 and along the centre of Georgia street to Granville street, which will 
 be the central point of distribution. The distributive system has been 
 designed by Thos C. Keefer, C. E. C. M. G., the highest authority on 
 waterworks in Canada and the United States, thus insuring a perfect 
 fire and water service throughout the whole city, It is contemplated 
 to lay, as a commencement, 8^ miles of distribution, an<l as many

 Inlet. Tho average level of the citv is 100 feet above hiirh-water 
 mark, the extreme height south' of False creek being 200 feet. The 
 .south mains will be capable of discharging three and-a-half millions of 
 gallons daily in the centre ot the city. It will thus l)e seen that a 
 tire service une([ualled anywhere in Canada or the United States will 
 be pi'ovided. 'J'he water is of unexceptionable quality, being clear, 
 cold and entirel}' free from any animal, vegetable or mineral impuri- 
 ties. The supply is unfailing, the river discharging, at lowest known 
 water, 440,000,000 gallons daily. Tliis mngnificent scheme for tlie 
 water supply of the Terminal City was originated by G. A. Keefer, 
 M. I. C. E., and under his skillful supervision, assisted by Mr. H. 
 B. Smith, C. E., the whole of the details of this great engineering 
 undertaking have been successfully arranged. It is expected that 
 water will he distributed throughout the city by the middle of June, 
 1888. 
 
 Sewerage. — The system of sewerage adopted in Vancouver is 
 that generally known as the " Separate System," i. e., the .sewers are 
 constructed for the purpose of cai-rying the fluid and feculent waters 
 from dwellings, and are not intended to convey surface or sub-soil 
 waters, which can be more easily and cheapl} disposed of by other 
 means. In designing the work the future was not forgotten, but a 
 thorough and comprehensive system for the whole city was adopted, 
 of which the sewers now laid will, without alteration, ultimately be- 
 come a part. The outlet and manholes are permanent works built in 
 concrete. The sewers are of timber which will when necessary be 
 replaced with vitrified pipe. The timVjer will last in all probability 
 ten years, perhaps unich longer. From the manner in which they 
 have been constructeci and laid, the sewers are perfectly water tight, 
 while as regards the flow in them the principle of the egg-.shaped 
 sewer ha.s been acted upon. Provision has also been made for auto- 
 maticily flushing them from end to end daily or of tener if necessary. 
 The sewage is Anally discharged into Bui card Inlet through a cast 
 iron pipe, 360 feet long, at a point beneath the surface, and about 50 
 feet beyond extreme low water mark. The works were designed by 
 Mr. E. Mchun, M. Con. Soc. C. E., under whose supervision they have 
 been executed.

 declined the offer, as the site was not considered suitable, and pur- 
 chased ten lots in block 28, at S250 each, where a large and coininodi- 
 ous hospital will shortly be erected. 
 
 NEWSPAPERS. 
 
 Daily News-Advertiser — Cotton & Gordon, proprietors. Pub- 
 lished daily ; well edited, and what may very correctly be termed a 
 live energetic paper in every sense. Well- written articles and neat 
 typographical work are the chief characteristics of the News- 
 Advertiser. 
 
 Vancouver Herald — Daily and Weekly editions. The Weekly 
 Herald was the first paper printed and publislied in Vancouver. T\v'. 
 first number was issued in January, 1886. The city was not then in- 
 corporated. The office was destroyed with the city in the great fire 
 on the 13th June of the .same year. Arrangements were made to 
 print a small weekly edition in the Columbian office. New West- 
 minster, until a new plant and a building could be pi'ocured. It was 
 not till the latter part of August that the building and plant wero 
 ready, and the first issue took place from the new office on the 3r<l 
 September. The Weekly Herald was continued up to 1st of June, 
 1887, when a daily edition was added. Both are now issued regularly 
 from th? Hirald offije, on the corner of Hastings and C.imbie streets,

 SAW AND PLANING MILLS. 
 
 Royal City Planing Mills Co., Vancouver— A branch of 
 the firm of the same name in New Westminster, situated on False 
 creek, at south end of Carrall street. Mill bulking 310x66, boiler 
 room 24x40, engine room 20x80, blacksmith shop 20x24. Machinery: 
 One double rotary gang, saws 56 diam., one resawer, three trimmers, 
 two planers, one shingle saw and jointer, one lath saw. Capacity, 
 40,000 feet lumber per day, 30,000 shingles, 10,000 laths ; one engine, 
 50-horsepovver, one engine hO-horsepower, four boilers, one dry kiln 
 24x36. One sash and door factory containing 19 machines, building 
 210x50 ; one warehouse 36x100 ; one boarding house 24x60. This 
 coMipany manufacture all kinds of building material and house furn- 
 ishings, and employ 100 men. They contemplate adding more ma- 
 chinery in the spring to both sawmill and factory; a blower to carry 
 the shavings from the planers to the burner being about the first to 
 be put in. 
 
 Commercial Mills, Sash and Door Factory. — These mills 
 have been in operation since 1886, and are owned by James 
 Leamy and George F. Kyle, both gentlemen being well and favor- 
 ably known throughout British Columbia, having resided in the 
 Province for some years. The mills are situated on the .south shore 
 of False Creek, and the advantages for booming out logs at almost all 
 stages of the tide, are unequalled by any mill on the coast. Besides 
 carrying on a general sawing business and manufacturing all kinds 
 of building material, this firm with its usual enterprise has started to 
 erect a sash, door and blind factory on the opposite side of the creek 
 and directly across the stream fi'om the mill, the land having lately 
 been purcha.sed from the Canadian Pacific Ilailway Company, and at 
 the present time all the foundations for factory, wharf and boiler 
 house have been completed, besides a switch which runs from the 
 main line of the C. P. R. directly in front of their building. This 
 will enable them to load directly from tlie saws and machinery on to 
 the cars, saving time, money an(' labor. The Commercial mill has 
 during the short time it has been in operation obtained a far greater 
 share of public patronage than that which usually falls to the lot of 
 new companies, when brought into competion with these who have 
 been longer establi-shed. This firm every week ship per rail to near- 
 ly all patts of the Northwest Territories and to the interior of British 
 Columbia, all kinds of building material, bridge timber, shingles and 
 doors. In connection with their mills, the enterprising members of 
 this firm 1)uilt and launched lately a steamer some 80 feet long which 
 does all the towing of logs and scows necessary for their business.

 This company's chief business is mostly foreign shipping, principally 
 to America, China and Australia. The outturn is above fifteen million 
 £tet annually, having a daily capacity of 75,000 feet. The mill gives 
 employment to about 189 men, in addition to their logging camps — 
 one in English Bay and two on Thurlow Island, about 130 miles 
 distant. The machinery consists of one cnrcular double 60-inch saw, 
 one pony gang with •t4'-inch gate, lath and picket mill, one edger and 
 two planers, &c , &c. 
 
 MooDYViLLE Saw Mill — Is situated at Moodyville and is the 
 most extensive north of Puget Sound. New machinery is being 
 erected which will increase the output over 25 per cent during the 
 next year. In connection with the mill is an hotel, store, reading 
 room and library and capacious dwellings for th" employees. 
 Machinery: One engine 500-hor.se power, 11 boilers, and lighted by 
 ten electric (Brush) 20,000 candle-power and driven by water-power, 
 large double circular saw, re-sawing, edging, lath, picket, planers, 
 &c., &c. Employ 100 men, and about 100 employed at the logging 
 camps and 30 'longshoremen engaged in loading and unloading. The 
 company has also a yard an<l wharf at Vancouver, on Water street, 
 under the superintendence of M. Matheson. The mill is owned by 
 Welch & Co., of San Francisco, and Welch, Rithet & Co. are their 
 agents in Victoria, while Mr. B. Springer makes a most efficient 
 manager at Moodyville. 
 
 Vancouver Saw and Planing Miu-s. — Situated on Fal*e Creek 
 at the foot of Granville street. Present building 40x100 feet with 
 all the latest improvements in machinery for turning out rough and 
 dressed lumber, mouldings, etc. Employ about thirty hands and 
 shortly propose increasing the works ar u erecting more extensive 
 boilers and machinery. Although only started in June, the increase 
 of business necessitates this extension. McKay & Sweetman, props. 
 
 Shingle Mill. — G. F. Slater, manager. Situated on False creek. 
 Capacity 35,000 shingles daily, and is constantly increasing and add-

 STEAM SHIPS. ^ 
 
 The Canadian Pacific Steam Ship Co. — Run daily steamers 
 (except Monday) between Victoria and Vancouver and Moodyviile, 
 lea%nng Victoria at 2 a. m., and returning daily (except Monday) from 
 Vancouver on the arrival of the eastern express train. 
 
 Steamer Premier — Leaves Vancouver each Monday and Thurs- 
 day at 14 o'clock for Port Townsend, Seattle and Tacoma, returning 
 from Tacoma, each Tuesday and Friday at 14 o'clock. This tine 
 steamer's registered tonnage is 602, with a crew of 70 hands, fitted 
 up with all the most modern improvements and lighted throughout 
 with the electric light. The business between the Sound and Van- 
 couver has, within the past twelve months, increased over 60 per cent. 
 
 Pacific Steam Ship Co.'s Steamers — Arrive and depart weekly 
 between Vancouver and San FranciscQ. The vahie of goods passing 
 the Custom House by this route has doubled itself. The value of the 
 United States goods in transit for one trip of the Mexico in June last 
 amounted to S70,576.10. 
 
 China Steamers. — Steamers on this route arrive and depart from 
 Vancouver monthly. At present the steamer Parthia, 2,.S00 tons net 
 register, j;he Abyssinia, 2,500 tons, the Port Victor, 2,500 tons, and 
 the Port Augusta, 2,500 tons, are the only vessels on this newly es- 
 tablished route. As the Australian trade is being developed a very 
 large business is anticipated. The Parthia on her last outward trip 
 (Nov. 10th) had a full cargo. The passenger traffic has been so great 
 that in each trip both inwards and outwards accommodation was with 
 difficulty found, and in one instance passengers were refused. The 
 company are building three large steamers, 4,000 tonnage each, which 
 when completed will be placed on this route. They will be fitted up 
 with all the most modern improvements. Capt. Webber. Cordova

 and Lu'u Island on Tuesdays, Thursda}'^ and Sundays, nt 7 o'clock, 
 returning to Victoria Mondays at 12 o'clock, Wednesdays and Fridays 
 at 7 o'clock ; for Plumper's Pass from New Westminster Sunday at 
 7 o'clock, returning Monday at 3 o'clock. Steamers for Hope and way 
 landings leave New Westminster every Wednesday ; for Chilliwhack 
 and way landings every Monday and Saturday at 7 a. m. The 
 steamer Maude leaves Victoria for Alberni and Barclay Sound ports 
 once a month. 
 
 Northern Route. — A steamer leives Victoria twice a month 
 for ports on the Northern Coast, from Alert Bay to Wrangle. 
 
 Portland (Oregon) Route. — The steamship Sardonyx leaves 
 Victoria about twice each month for Portland direct. Head office,
