'Uie first of four qiHarto volumes is mainly devoted to the Population of the United States, us represented by number, sex, age, claq3, nativity, and occupation ; the whole arranged by States, Counties, Cities, Towns, &c. The present compilation is confined to numbers and class, giving the total 'j/hite and colored population, all being alike free citizens. This arrange-* ment has never before been given to the public, and will form a new era in our enumeration when the Ninth Census, of 1870 is completed. It is deeply interesting to watch the progress of the Union, in population and weaLh, as the decades occur, running through the present century. In 1800, the population of the then twenty States and Territories was 6,805,925; ii 1810, the population of twenty-five States, &c., was 7,239,814 ; in 1820, the population of twenty-sevien States, &c;„ was 9,638,131 ; in 1830, the population of twenty-eight States, &c., was 12,866,920; in 1840, the population of thirty States, «fcc., was 17,062,566 ; in 1850, the population of thirty-two States, &c., was 23,191,876 ; in 1860, the population of forty -two States, &c., was 31,448,321, including 3,9^3,760 slaves of African descent. From the foregoing increase of population, (about three per cent per annum), the United States contained in 1865, 35,000,000 inhabitants, and ia 1870 will contain 41,839,000 ; in 1880, 55,822,000 ; in 1890, 73,977,000 ; and in 1900, about 100,000,000 of free inhabitants. If Bkitish Amerioa, which now contains about the same population as the United States in 1790, increases in the same rapid ratio, in 1871, there will be 5,200,000 inhabitanto; in 1881,^7,000,000; in 1891, 9,500,000: \iX 1901, 12,800,000, being about the same as the United States contained in 1830 ; altogether making a total of upwards of 112,000,000 of inhabitants, speaking the same language, being, no doubt, destined soon to form one great Kepublic.
