 Scuthers has long loved. I learing that Kent has been selected as Capt,, .Scuthers, ilirough

 ship for Kent, and secretly vowing to "break him" in .South Africa, on the first availnble chance

 is a RECEPTION (ilVEN HV .MRS. B.\THURST and hor nieces, Gwendolyn Sinuoe 
 and Gladys Sydenham, in honor of ('arling Kent and his friends of the London Contingent, at 
 ACT. noon on the day of tlie departure of the London boys, Oct. 24th, i89(). The action of this act 
 opens the plot against Kent, shows .Scuthers' intentions, and brings forward many of the prin- 
 cipal characters in the drama. Scathers offers himself again to Gwendolyn, and is again 
 rejected. The act ends with the departure of the l)oys, as viewed through the windows, band 
 playing, jieople cheering, etc., etc. 
 
 is CHRISTMAS DAY IN THE CAMP (the stage showing a part of the encamp.nent of 
 the London ('onipany) on Orange River, ('apt. Kent has been wounded in a sortie, and is 
 ACT. lying in his tent reailing a news|)aper Soldiers engaged in various occupations, some polish- 
 ing bayonets, some shaving, others cleaning accoutrements, Kaffir servants flitting in and out 
 doiiig the rough camp work, some playing cards, and all lamenting that they have "no news 
 from home.' During the action of the act the mail arrives, and a wagon load of Xmas boxes. 
 Mrs. Halhurst and her lu'eces opportunely arrive also, as Red ('ross nur.-es Two of the strong 
 character parts of the play introduced in this act, are Uulagoa lie( huna Higgs, an educatrd 
 Kaffir, a B. A. of Cambridge and a loyal British subject, yet in touch with his tribe, and a 
 Kaffir woman, L'naUmdi Maio, a noble specimen of this primitive race, who wishes, and has 
 longv/ished, the elevation of her j)eople, and who prays earnestly that the civilization of the 
 Anglo-Saxon may cause Africa to blossom like the rose, and that not alone her people, but all 
 so-called savage tribes, may after this war enjoy the full privilege of civil and religious liberty. 
 Mrs. Schreiner Kimberley, a wealthy mine-owner from Kiniberley unrl .n Hriiisli lefngcc, i-* 
 also introduced in this act. At the Christmas dinner are introduced an old Kaftlr cocoa-nut 
 dance, and many patriotic songs. Scuthers plots with Boer sjiies and Kaffir renegades to 
 have Kent arrested as a traitor to his country, accusing him of selling to the enemy full ])lai,s 
 and m:ips, ])oiniing out the intentions of the Britisli generals, the locations and quantities of 
 their stores, ammunition, guns, etc. The act closes with the arrest of Kent, just as the Con- 
 tingent is ordered to break camp to join Gen. Methuen in the relief of Kimberley. Scuthers 
 is placed in coniniand of the London Com])any. Kent protests his innocence. His fiancee 
 is thoroughly convinced of Scuthers' hand in the ])lot, and with Biggs, Maio, Dooley and 
 Tavistock-NIews determines to bring Scuthers to justice. 
 
 is a r\'PICAL BOER HOME. Scene opens with morning prayer, reading of Scriptures, 
 and singing of Old Hundred. In this act is developed the average Boer life of the Transvaal 
 AQT. — the superstition, the ignorance, the hatred of the British, the home customs, etc On the 
 march to join Gen. Methuen, there has been a short, 'sharp and decisive contlict with the 
 Boers, ending, through the treachery of Scuthers, in the caj)turc of the greater part of the Lon- 
 don Company ; and we find Kent, Powell and others in chains in one corner of the room. 
 Sciuhers' reward for this act of treachery was to be ;^i,ooo from Kruger, and a Colonelcy 
 in the Boer army under Joubert. At an opportune n-.oment Scuthers is to be releasetl, take 
 horse, and join the Boer forces ; but, hajipily. Biggs has discovered this, and has jilaced 
 trusty Kaffirs on neighboring kopjes to cut off his escajie. A very thrilling scene takes ])lace 
 when Mews heliographs to these kopje.s, offering large s.uns to the Kat'tir who brings in 
 Sciuhers alive— ultimately, Scuthers is condemned to be .=hot.

 Eng'and. General Roberts and staff arrive. Kruger sends Joubert to make peaie. Absolute 
 surrender and univer^al allegiance to the British Mag. with the total effacemeni of all other 
 governmcnis in South Africa is demanded and granted. The fall of Pretoria and the wiping 
 out of the S >ui.h Afi'ican Republic is thus assured.
