The Kewcastle District formerly comprised the Cotmties of Victoria, Peterboro', Nortiiumberland and Durham. The Population of this District in 1810 was 2,316— it is now over one hundred thousand souls! The assessed va^ue of property in 1810, for the whole of the above District, was £36,000. Kow the assessed value for Korthumberland and Durham alone 18 THEEE MILLIONS SEVEN HUNDRED AND BEVENTY-NINB THOUSAND POUNDS I In 1810 there was not even a road. The settlfere passed from one clearing to another by a path along the LaJie shore. Kow vre (the United Counties of ^Northumberland and Durham,) have tie greatest num- ber of gravel roads of any Counties in Upper Canada. In pl^e of the canoes or batteaux of 1810, we have magnificent steamers, and no less than three lines of rfittlway intersect the Countiis in various directions.
