> s--f- he Qfr^on f I I morial Jitnl LIST OF CONTRIBUTORS UP TO JAN., 1885, ilith (iiif|)laiiatoi!5 ItDfj, AND A STATEMENT OF THE FUND. t EXPLANATORY NOTE. The Committee in charge of tl^e Ryerson Memoeial Fund desire to present, in the following pages, f.he result of their appeal of two years ago, (and subsequent appeals,) ia behalf of that Fund. The object of that appeal was to raise a sum of money sufficient to enable the Com- mittee to erect an enduring Memorial, in the shape of a Bronze Statue, to one of Canada's most distinguished sons and benefactors — the late Rev. Dr. Egerton Ryerson. The appeal, as it will be seen, has met with a somewhat unequal response in the several counties. Some have done nobly ; others have done — nothing . In the large proportion of cases the result of the several appeals made have not come up to the reasonable expectation of the Commit- tee. In the other cases their expectations have been exceeded. The result is, however, now published, and with a two-fold object: First. To acknowledge with grateful pleasure the gratifying in- stances in which a liberal response has been made to the various appeals of the Committee. In this connection the hearty and untiring exertions of the Inspectors of the Counties of Ontario, Halton, the southern part of Hastings, the northern part of York, and the Counties of Brant, Waterloo, etc., deserve especial mention. Secondly. To give the friends of the cause of Education who have either made no response hitherto, or a very slight one, to tiie statement and appeals sent out, another opportunity to do honour to the memory and labours of one whose name will be forever honourably associated with one of our great national interests, — that of popular education — and one whose memory is in every way dear to the hearts of Canadians of all classes, as being the means, under Providence, of promoting their intellectual anct moral advancement as a people. Jas. L. Hughes,)^ „ o , J. GEORGE HODGINS, Jas. Carlyle, I ^'^ ^ ^'' '■ Chairman. Toronto, Jan., 1885. N. B. — Further contributions to the fund, (which is yet quite in- sufficient for the purpose aimed at) will be gratefully received by the Treasurer, Mr. Walter S. Lee, 70 Church Street, Toronto. At Irast $2,000 more will be required so as to enable the Committee to erect a suitable Memorial to the distinguished founder of our system of National Education. >. -.J •_ J - .. 4,.
