 A Ktudy of cloven was made in this lalmratory in 1900, and the re«ult« are pub 
 lished in Bulletin No. 73. The method* of examination there deocrihed have been 
 mainly follnwo i in the work now placed in your handH. Mo fur ox determiaationii 
 of ail fixed oil, tannin and total volatile matter are concerne<l, the well known procesHea 
 have \>een employed. The diHtinction betwenn that portion of the volatile matter which 
 reprexents a(iue<>ii!t moisture, and that fiortion which reprenents volatile oil haa been 
 effected (an deucriix-d in Bulletin 73) by drying »n vacuo over Hulphuric acid, to the 
 point of incipient dixeoloration of the acid, and taking thi« loes to rr^'rentnt the 
 mointuro of the sample. 
 
 The mean values found for volatile oil, in 28 aamplcH of genuine cloves by thia 
 method, are as follows : —

 Cloves are defined by the FikhI Standards Committee of the United States (Circ. 
 No. 19 ; Dept. of Agriculture, Wa«hinj,'ton, June I'JOfl) as follows : — 
 
 " Cloves are the dried flower buds of Curyophyllus aromaticus, L. ; which contain 
 not more than five (5) per cent, of clove stems ; not le^s than ten (10 percent, of volatile 
 ether extract ; not less than twel- c 12 per cent, of quercitannic acid ; not more than 
 eight (8) per cent of total ash ; not more than five tenths (0 S) per cr nt. of ash insoluble 
 in hydrochloric acid, and not more than ten (10) percent, of crude fiber." 
 
 The " volatile ether e.ntract" mentioned in this definition is not strictly identical 
 with volatile oil, for the reason that it is determined on the cloves after drying by a 
 method which involves a considerable, and an unknown loss of volatile oil. The limit 
 of 10 per cent, for volatile ether extract, named in the definition, is certainly too low 
 to apply to volatile oil. I huve elsewhere (Bull. 73) suggeste<l a minimum limit of 14 
 per cent, for " volatile oil" in cloves ; and I am convinced that an inspection of this 
 report will justify my recommendation. It is true that 17 samples classified as 
 " probably genuine" yield less than U per cent, of volatile oi'. The samples in question
