 ment, in 1844, until his retirenicnt, in 187<i, and until tho end of 188!) -has in 
 the press of our ruhlishing House a wori< on tii? "Legislation and History (>f 
 8ei)arate Schools in Tpper Canada," from their inception, in 1841, to the pass- 
 age of the "Finality Act" of 18(,"0-l8(;;i On this latter measure were based 
 the provisions of the Britisli Nortli Americfi Act relating to Separate Schools. 
 In this connection will he given the text of the legal o])inion of three noted 
 Queen's Counsel on these provisions, which was published in March, 18()7. 
 The work will o.vtend to between 200 and 250 pages of printed matter. It will 
 contain a sketch, or narrative, of the ])rincipal proceedings, incidents, and 
 more im[iortant correspondence and conferences which took j)lace on the sul)- 
 ject of Separate Schools from 1841 to 18(),'5, and such later proceedings in regard 
 to these schools, down to 187<), as may be of interest. The text, or a sunnnary 
 thereof, of the various Separate School Bills, amendments, etc., prejjared by 
 promoters of Separate Schools, members of the Legislature, or other.", during 
 those years, will be given ; also, the [)rincii)al division lists, with the nii'ues of 
 the members voting, etc. In thii. work will be given the [jarticulii .s <,!' *-h.e 
 innnediate causes which led to the introduction of the principle ot Sej)' .ate 
 Schools into the Legislation of 1841 — the early o[)inions of rejjre.se'.laiives of 
 the Roman Catholic Clnu'ch and others upon the school system of Upper 
 Canada — tributes to Bishops Power and Charbonnel — extracts from corres- 
 pcmdence on the subjects-Bishop Micdonell's friendli relations with tlie Home 
 (Government - gi'ant to him for churches and schools —the Rev. Father Stafford 
 on Bishop Macdonell's educational eff(n'ts, and other matters ; also, opinions on 
 the Sejjarate School Question by jjublie men — Sir John IMacdonald, Rev. Dr. 
 Ryerson, and Senator Penny (giving a Lower Canada view of the (puistion), 
 William Lyon Mackenzie, J. Sandtield Macdonald, John Elmsley, ireorge 
 Brown, John G. Bowes, J. W. Gaml)le, and several other public men ; ami Dr. 
 Ryerson's confidential rejiort to the Governor-General on Se])arate Schools in 
 1858— ])ersonal and jiarliamentary incidents of the struggle on the Separate 
 School Question in 1850, 1855, and 18(;.'5— attitude of the members of the 
 Legislature on l)oth sides, and methods emph)yed in nuadding the Se[iarate 
 School legislation of these years, etc. The number and variety of these per- 
 sonal references to preeminent individuals will give an especial intei'est to this 
 work. Altogether, this l)ook will prove to l)e a most vahial)le radc nu'ciim of 
 wholly authentic and reliable information on the interesting su))ject of which 
 it treats. Tlie name of the author is a sutHcient guarantee for both the fulness 
 and correctness, as well as accuracy, of the information given.

 not only ot Deputy, but also of intimate friend and confidant. Dr. Hodgins is 
 able to give us an iinier history, of which, in its comitleteness, no other living 
 man is cognizant. The work itself, ft)r which he is tlius so perfectly qualified, 
 he evidently performs as a loving duty to the dead, vindicating by the clear 
 light of inner facts the consistent and jjatriotic aims of the great Canadian in 
 this, the most difficult part of his life work. He has written that posterity 
 might fully understand the inner motives as well as the public acts of his life- 
 long friend and fellow-worker, the man to whom he was united by ties of rare 
 atl'ection."

 "This work is of great interest to all concerned in educational matters, and 
 to those who desire to trace the intricacies of the Separate School ipiestion. . . 
 Dr. Hodgii s, in giving the History of Separate Schools, adopts no controversial 
 tone, but presents the facts r.s they were developed, fairly and frankly assigning 
 to each individual concerned ... in the settlement of the question, the place 
 to which he belongs. . . . There is a very general desire to know the history 
 of Separate Schools in Ontario, and Dr. Hodgins' admirably written book meets 
 the popular requirements in that regard."

 " Dr. Hodgins was for a long time Deputy Minister of Education, and was 
 a personal friend and colleague of Dr. Ryerson for over thirty years, during the 
 progress of Separate School legislation. As might be expected from the

 ". . . Evidently Dr. Ryerson had no easy task, but Dr. Hodgins, who 
 knew him better than any one now living, . . . maintsiins that he discharged 
 his dutj with fairness to all. That he had sharp controversies with . . . clergy 
 and laymen, with lawyers, men of business, with school boards, professors and 
 editors, was unavoidable in his ])osition. He was a man of great courage, and 
 never declined a challenge. . . . Dr. Hodgins' record of Separate School legisla- 
 tion and controversy — of which he was a witness, and in which he had a con- 
 8idera})le share— must be found of value to the student of our educational

 This volume by Dr. Hodgins is most readable, and throws a .strong and 
 continuous light on this much vexed <piestion. The author had exceptitmal 
 advantages in the preparation of this work. He had been foi forty years the 
 intimate friend, and for thirty-two years the chief assistant, of the Founder of 
 our System of Education. . . . He writes from an extended educational exper- 
 ience [of 55 years, in 1899], and with the fullest historical data at his command. 
 . . . The details are brightened by a vast amount of private and confidential 
 corresjxmdence which reveals the inner history of the movement with a clear- 
 ness and reliability which greatly adds to the interest of the reader."
