APf-lKI^K/^lN men SCHOOL, The Building. New \\\^h School Huildin^ recently oj)enc(l in the city of Moncton and now occupied for school purposes, is situated on the site of the central grinnids, which were formerly occupied by \^ a nund)er of small woeulen school buildings which, being utterly inadecjuate to the re(juirements of the times and to the growing populatior> of Moncton, it became necessary that a new anil commodious up-to-date building should be erected. That has been done. Moncton to-day h;is one of the best cquipi)ed, largest, antl most commodious school buildings in the Maritime Provinces. It is constructed ofbricU and stone, having a front- age on School street of 129 feet and on liotsford and Alma streets, 90 feel. It is three storeys high, besides an elaborate bnsement. It contains seven- teen classrooms, the average size of which is about ihirly-tive feet square, a large assembly room capable of seating six hundred adults, a library room, officers' room, and two rooms for the teachers. The laljoratory is situated in the liasement, being well lighted and ven- tilated. The halls of the building are a striking feature, being exceedingly wide, admitting (if eight abreast marching through the hill. The stairways are of ample and easy ascent; four abreast can march at ease and up the stairways. The building is so constructed that there are three avenues of descent from each flat, so that in the space of one minute the occupants, nine hundred, can be dismissed from the building in case of emergency. Ample precaution has been taken against fire accident. Through the basement anil three storeys is a standing water pipe, with hose attachment, in each flat. There is also provided in each fiat a chemical fire extinguisher for putting out incipient fires. f mmmmef!. MOyCTON, ^'. /'. The late Secretary, Mr. C. R.
