Historical Sketch

UK ONTARIO SCHOOL OF ART was the
first Art School in the Province, and was
founded by the Ontario Society of Artists
in 1876, with Government aid. The staff
was composed of T. Mower Martin, R.f.A.,
principal, and teacher of drawing,'; Mrs.
Schreiber, teacher of paintinjj ; J. T. Rolph,
A.R.C.X., teacher of enj,'ravin}4-; and J.is. Smith, R.C.A., teacher of
 architecture. Subsequently L. R. O'Brien, R.C.A., Henry IVrre,
 R.C.A-. John A. Kraser, R.C.A., Richard Baijfent, M. Matthews,
 R.C.A.. W. Revell. A.R.C.A., and R. Harris. President R.C.A.,
 became members of the staff.

The School occupied rooms, until 1883, at 14 Kinj,'^ Street
West, jointly with the Ontario Society of .Artists, when it was
removed to the Normal School. After some further chanj,'es it
was remove to Queen Street West, near N'on^'e, where it was
continued for a time under the name of the Toronto .Art School.
Owinjj to lack of public interest the Board of Directors were unable
to fulfil the requirements of the Educational Department, the
recoj,'nition of which was then jfiven to the present orj,'anization,
which was incorporated in i8<jo under the name of The Central
Ontario School of Art and Desi^jn. Since that time its prof,'ress
has been steady, and the promise for the future is bri},fht.

The influence of the School has been most marked, many of
those who have attended it beinj; now amonjj^ the leaders of the
various art activities in our own countrv and abroad.
