Tlio cars and trucks are to be made exactly to the diinensiuns an I conditions given in the specification, according to tlie dra\vii!g.s. and exactly similar and ef|nal in all respects to the sam- ples and models supjtlied. Each variety of timber used is to bo of first quality of its kind, dry, sound, free from large knots, shakes, or any signs of decay, well and fully seasoned, and accu- rately fitted and jointed together. Tiic wrought iron is to be of '• Best Staffordshire " or of o(|ual and approved quality; all welds and joints to be carefully made, the forgings to bo sound, and neatly finished. The ordinary castings to bo made from tough grey pig iron, they are to be sound, smooth, free from sand lioles, blow holes, or scoria, and perfect in shape, size and every other respect. All the bolts and nuts used are to be of full diameter, screwed to " Wliitworths standard thread;" all the threads to bo clean and full, so that the nuts will not shake; all bolt holes to bo fair, opposite and perfectl}* circular, the bolts to be a tight driving tit through all timber,and, wherever possible, boltheads are to boon outside and (jn top of the material through which they pass. The contractor is to find, provide, fix and perform with the bu-t materials of their si-verai kinds all and every part of the works lierein specified, or represented on the drawings, or that may not be indicated but is generally implied and under.-^tood in the full equipment of Railway box-cars and trucks, and tliej' are to be fitted and finished in the most complete manner, to tiic entire satisfaction of the Company's Mechanical Superintendent, or his appointed Agent or Inspector, all of whom hhall be allowed to inspect the work during ordinary working houi-s, and shall have the power to reject the whole or any jwrt found to be defective in quality of material or workmanship, or not in accordance with the specification, the drawings, and the samples or models supplied. The ends of each half of tru.s.s at centre of car liavc to connect them a double-ended nut or turn- buckle at least 9 in. long, and at alternate ends screwed with right and left hand thread. In the course of rods from the centre toward ends of car, they pass under east-iron shoes on underside of transoms, then over shoes on toj) of packing- ])ieces on top of bolster (so as to be close to floor) and then through the head stock, which is provided with 4h in. square cast-iron washers | in. thick, having inclined faces to give ])ro]ier bearing to face of trus.snuts. All shoes foi- rod are secured in place by the paps or pins cast on them being lightly driven into shallow holes drilled in timber. TRUCKS FOR CHANGE-GAUGE BODIES. If trucks are to be built complete ami independent .mj that car-body will exchange with trucks of Foreign Railroads, the brake bean\s and shoes will then be inside or between the two wheels on one of the trucks. Tlie beam is formed b}- a piece of hard wood i ft. 1 in. long x 5 in. x 2 in., having bolted to it at top and bottom by tive bolts ^ in. diameter x [V^ in. long two wronght-iron plates 5 ft. 2^ in. x '2\ in. x t in. Between these plates at each end is a cast-iroi\ blct'k with slide at outer end on angle. Each of these block's and with it the brake-shoe is secured to the j)lates l>y two bolts J in. diameter x G^ in. long with double nuts. These end slides on angle arc supported b^- splayed and double-footed brackets that clip the stirrup ))acking-piece, and are bolted to low(>r bar of side- frame each i)y two bolts '('in. diameter x 2j^ in. long. The guides or channels on the top of this bracket to allow ot the movement of the slide-blocks are inclined at sucli an angle that when brake-lever is released from pressure the be.'nn> ami shoes will by their gravil\' fall aivay from ami thus •cK'ar" the wheel tread. As a ])recaution of safely in ca.-e of the bracket nv slide lieing broken, the spring-board carries on its upjjei- surface two wrought-iron plates 18 in. .\ 2\ in. x h in., bolted each by two bolts I in. diameter x 4f in. long, that will prevent the lireak-bcam lidling down on to the ti-ack. The lever is o( the standard pattern, but the short rod from lever to beam is n in. diameter as it is in com|iression when the brakt' is ajiplied. The details of washers and their l)olts. and fur iever and short-rtxi, are shown on tletail drawing, and must bo similar to those shown or to the specimens supjilied so as to be interchangeable. These trucks have a second set of friction chairs similar to those at end of bolster, and at toji flush with them, but they are spaced only ;-i feet centres apart, that is, 18 in. on each side ot centre of king-pin.
