PUBLISHED BY E. WHITEFIELD, AND SOLD BY DAWSON ft BROS., GREAT ST. JAMES STREET. BSRALD BTBAM PBXBB. 1864. smi s't. EXPLAKATOBT. .:^,' This Iftile work is got up especially for the benefit of strangers ; and to them and the business men of Montreal it is offered in the hope that it will be found both interesting and useful. With this book the greatest stranger can find his way to any business house without asking questions of anyone. The design is an entirely original one, and is probably not yet fully devel- oped. It has been the result of much thought and labor ; and although no pains have been spared to make it perfectly accurate, it may be that errors have crept in ; yet I fiatter myself these will be found neithemumerous nor important. A few words of explanation will perhaps be necessary. Only the principal htsinesa streets are represented, and in some cases the whole street is not shown, as for instance St. Paul is commenced at No. 100, and Notre Dame at 109. The eastern portions of these streets, beyond these numbers, contain few and scattered stores, doing a small retail trade. Each street commences at the bottom of the page and proceeds up. The direction in which the street runs is marked East, West, &c., — of course owing to the method of laying out the streets of Montreal these terms (North, &c.) are only an approximation to the truth. The Jlgures on the sides of each street correspond with those that are to be found on the buildings. In many cases they are omitted because many of the houses are not numbered. It is to be especially remembered that the size of the lots is not intended to give any idea as to their relative proportions. Where no name appears the lot or building is unoccupied. By referring to page 52 the reader will perceive that it differs from other pages, containing as it does information in reference to the number of stories each ouilding is high, and also designating whether it is of wood, brick or sfone. In future editions this feature will be more fully developed. Jnglish, Scotch, Jrish, . . . Canadia Do. Other C Total P< Building Banking PRO] Wheat, Corn, . . Peas, . . . Oats, . . . Barley, .
