S. Harry. Jios/iiii, \'C)?,. High praise, bnt by no means undeserved, as the niere.st glance down the " bead roll of fame," as imperfectly tran- scribed in this work, will convince the most sceptical. The Genea- logy of the Gushing Family forms of itself almost a synopsis of the colonizing and early settlement of the New England States and a j)ortion at lea^t of the Provinc..' of Quebac, and by that Ijest and purest of its stock, the Puritans. lien; we read, as i.: a history, the mode of setllemejit ; the organization of locjil anl general offices for the proper and regular administration, civil and military, of the affairs of tlie colonies ; the origin of the causes which led to the memorable struggle for Independence of the British Colonies in America; the ditliculiies to be contended with in the re-organizatioii of the affairs of the young nation, iti laws and government. In the halls of the Legislature, in tiie adniini.-- tration of the laws, in the arena of commerce and in all tiie reli- gious controversies of tiie times in wliicli tliey lived, tlie memljer.~ of this remarkable family ajjpear almost [ue -eminent. The scrupulous accuracy with which the Pilgrim Fathers record- ed the births and marriages of the colonists, makes it a matter of no great difficulty in tracing the descendantsof the early settlers down to at least the middle of the eighteenth century ; and from the ex- ceptionally prominent part taken in all public matters by raemljers Mr^- ■^^^^ 0. !-'^: PREFACE. of tliia family, their descent can be traced by nearly if not all of the name to the present day. The work now sent forth i-i, for auglit the author knows, the first iasued with any preti'nsions to a general genealogical record. It is necessarily incomplete in many of its details, and many jirccious fragments remain in his hands, for lack of the necessary links to connect them with the rest of the chain. Some explanation is due for the appearance of this woik in such small type and the unnecessary crowding of some of tlie families together. The original intention of the compiler iiad l»een .^imijly to print in order, for his own [)ersoual convenience, a voluminous mass of manuscript memoranda, the result of several years desul- tory collection. Tae work assumed such proportions, that he was induced to expend considerable extra ellbrts to ensure sucii com- pleteness as might be possible, without attempting to have any alteration of the type originally selected, and iu^which the greater portion had already been set up. Of the many who have rendered valiuible assistance, special mention must be nuule of Daniel Cushing, Esq., of Lowell, Mass. ; Chas. W. Cushing, Esq., of South llingham (who kindly furnished copies of the Hingham and Scituate Records) and lion. TheophilusH. Cushing, of Winterport, .Me. The " Willis collection " of the Portland, Me., Public Library, and the invaluable Library of " Tlie New England Historical and Genealogical Society," of Boston, have furnished much valuable information, and a list of the principal works to which reference was thus had is appended. An ordi- mince or proclamation was issued during the reign of lienry V. iuliibiting or forbidding the bearing of arms by any not duly autho- rized so to do, but, in total disregard of this royal ordinance, a mul- tiplicity of abuses, irregularities and di'^orders were found to have crept into all matters api)ertaining to descent and arms, in conse- quence whereof commissions were iasued under the Great Seal to the two Provincial Kings of Arms, authorizing and commanding each by himself or his deputy to visit the whole of his ])roviuce as often as he should deem it necessary ; to convene before him all those who bore, or assumed to bear arms and wore styled esquires ami gentlemen, and to cause them to produce and show by what authority and right they challenged ami claimed the said use of arms. In pursuance of this royal commission, the circints of the Kings of Arms, called Visitations, commenced about the beginning of the sixteenth century. The Visitati(>ns occurred once about every thirty years. The Heralds' Visitations are preserved as a book of record, and those who are enabled to .leduce descent from an ancestor whose arirorial ensigns have been acknowledged in any of the Visitations are entitled to carry those arms by right of inheritance. Bl'kke's " General Armory" The Shield is distinguished by certain armorial colors called TixcTUKES, separated by division lines and chari/ml with a variety of animals, which themselves bear the designation of c.httrges.
