T> /"A "D T* ' '"' '• '"'■' '*^'"- Never since the Church was first planted in this Pro- ice, has any crisis occurred like that which marks its )8itiou at the present time. The step, so lone spoken of ithe part of the yenerable Society for the Jnropagation f the Gospel, has been taken. With a large reduction on its annual grant, it has left this Society to deal with B gross amount, without the least hope or further assis- ace— with a certain prospect of increased redaction. bowever hard the case may be felt on the part of the % missionaries, with reference to their relation to the oerable Society, the Church must acknowledge that the ent annual grant of £2,860 sterling, to this Diocese, is Imost generous gift. [The Diocesan Church Society, however, has been obliged assume a heavy responsibility in accepting the terms ;reed upon. The General Committee last vear required 1 appropriation of a large sum beyond its mrmor annual. [penditnre, in order to maintain the present Missions in le Diocese. The support of other objects of the Society I abandoned. The already very limited stipends of the isionarietJ could not be reduced. Without increased the onward progress of the Society must be stopped [With all these increased claims for the sympathy and pport of its members, it cannot bnt bn deplored that there m\i have been an (ictttaZ diminution in the income of Society during the year 1865. The increase of the ntributions from some of the smaller parishes was out- jne by the falling off in other quarters. ■When all the circumstances of the case are fully known id understood by the members of the Church, it surely ly reasonably be hoped that the dangers which threaten f missions may be avoided. For two the congregation enjoyed one service on every Sunday. I am more and more convinced that if the Church of England wishes to her own in Douglas, your Missionary must have the assistance of a candi- for Holy Orders, or a lay reader. We dare not hope for a Curate. A few will show the reasonableness of these statements. First, there is always lar congregation, including 16 communicants, at Tay Creek. To abandon any one of tho smallest and most rcmotj of our missions, would be a grievous wrong. It is surelj bad enough to turn a deaf ear to tho cry for help Iron those increasing settlements and parishes which are wliolljl devoid of the means of grace.
