City of Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley. 0i PREFACE. I ^ 'i In introducing the Second Annual Edition of the S. O. E. Directory for this district, I desire to offer my sincere thanks to those who have recogniz- ed its value and have assisted me by advertising- in its cohimns. It will be found that many of these by cause of nationality, etc., are not members of the order, while some who are members, and who advertised in the last edition are amongst the missing-. Others again on account of press of time in getting^ out tlie Register were not interview^ed, to these I offer my sincere apology. Last year's edition was much appreciated by the members, and was found to be a powerful medium in bringing- the brotherhood into notice, and increasing its numbers. The present issue as will be easily realized by comparison, is much more useful, and interesing has other lodges in the Ottawa Valley are added. I feel sure that these additions will be welcomed by many visiting brethren as by reference to its pages, no brother Englishman need feel himself a stranger in any of the towns herein mentioned may visit. The advertisers are all firms of the highest probity and will we feel sure, do their best to give satisfaction to any S. O. E. brethren dealing with them. When visiting such, a mention of this •^ register may be iiiutually satisfactory to l^otli Deal- er and Publisher. In conclusion we hope the present year may be most successful the S. O. E. P). Aid. Samuel J. Davis, the worthy district deputy of the Sons of Enpjland, is the youngest son of the late Wm. Eavis, builder, he was born in the Isle of Wight, 1S49, he was educated at Poplar House Academy, he loft South- ampton for Canada in 1870, and with the exception of several extended trips through the United States and many visits to Old England has resided ever since in Ottawa. Bro. Davis joined Bowood Lodge some five years ago, and has filled many offices in the lodge, including that of Presi- dent, he was delegate to Brantford also St, Catharines. Bro. Davis is an extensive holder of the Capital's real estate, And a larg? builder, some of the best residences of Ottawa are monuments to his skill. Bro. Davis is very popular as a, citizen of Ottawa. He is chairman of the main drainage <;omniittee, he was instrumental in having carried the by- laws to raise $500,000 to thoroughly drain the Capital. Place Names of Lodges^ ^^ DERBY LODGE. DerV)y Lodge, No. 30, was named after Lord Derby, on the suggestion, we believe, of Bro. Croft Hulme, P.S.G.P., of Bel.eville,Ont.,who came to Ottawa some 13 years ago to open the lodge, the members being at a loss what to name the lodge, the suggestion was acted upon and Derby Lodge has proved to be worthy the efforts of the members who have joined the Order under the name of one of England's greatest statesmen. BOWOOD LODGE. Bowood Lodge, No. 44, is called after the county seat ot tlie Marquis of Lansdowne, in Wiltshire England, who was Governor-General of Canada in the Jubilee year of 1887. A large percentage of the charter members of Bo- wood Lodge where from Wiltshire, and at a preliminary meeting held prior to the formation it was suggested that Bowood be the name, it was duly decided that it should be so, in honor of the then Marquis, who was Governor-Gen- eral of Canada at that time. It is gratifying to the mem- bers of Bowood Lodge that the Marquis of Lansdowne is at the present time England's War Minister in Lord Salis- bury's cabinet. On his lordship learning that Bowood Lodge was named after his family seat in Wilts, he sent an invitation — through the then President, R. J. Wick- stCL^d, LL. D. — to the members to attend an "At Home,'* at Rideau Hall, at which a large number of the brethreiv attended. t STANLEY LODGE. Stanley L*odpfe is another name familiar both to Cana- dians and English history. Our lare Governor-General, Lord Stanley, was then ruling in Canada, and it was decided that the lodge should carry his name. Stanley Lodge is doing a good steady work, pushing slowly but surely to the front, impressing all that it has its roots deeply planted and will ever hold and cheiish its representative name. RUSSELL LODGE. Russell Lodge is called after that famous English states- man Lord Russell, it also is holding its own and convincing others that it is planted firmly and growing as heailhy as the old English oak does. The locality is practically a sub- urb of Ottawa, and before the anm-xation, of what was known as New Edinburgh, it was a miniicipality of the County of Russell, a name having the same ret'^^ence to the same noble person as the lodge — Lord Russell. QUEEN'S OWN LODGE. Queen's Own Lodge, No. 233, was opened on Feb. 23rd.,^ 1896. The object in giving the name of Queen's Own was a suggestion by the Chaplain, Rev. H. L Horsey, it being the Jubilee Year he held it would be in keeping with the cele- bration that was about to take place throughout the Em- pire. The idea was acted upon, and the name is destined to be a lasting one among the names in the registry of the Sons of England. TENNYSON LODGE, HULL, P. Q. The above named lodge was established by that well- known Ottavva Valley representative, Bro. Ed. Ackroyd, who it can be said was the foremost of all organizer-s that Ottawa has had. Tennyson— a name familiar to English- men, was well chosen, at the time of opening the lodge the poet laureate was laying on a bed of sickness, which proved fatal, and the sympathy of the English people throughout the world were turned to one who had handed down some ■»w«iBMiw»»«j««-^««s6»:'^*-5*waw>.)iit«»»W^^ 10 of the most stirriner national inspirations which have thrilled the English mind. Lodge Tennyson, Hull, P. Q., is named after England's greatest poet — Lord Tennyson. NELSON LODGE, ALMONTE. Nelson Lodge bears a name familiar to all English speaking people the world over, a name that Englishmen love to revere, one that has made history for England and that has immortalized the character of Englishmen. The members of Nelson lodge have proved to the S.O.E. that they can carry out the order give by England's great admiral that " England expects every man to do his duty." The members of this lodge are imbued with the spirit that has animated Englishmen everywhere. Nelson is one of the progressive lodges of the order, was established 1887, and is governed by energetic and efficient officers. The City of Ottawa has a District Council presided over by Bro. S. J. Davis, D.D., the secretary is Bro. Richard Patching. The council meets monthly. The Daughters of England is also flourishing. It is composed of wives and daughters of members of the S.O.E. Lodge Ivy is making very substantial progress. Lion Lodge, Ottawa is as prominent and enterprising as any in the Juvenile department, Its name is taken from that king of the forest, the lion, which is emblematic of the strength and ability of England. The lodge possesses a first-class fife and drum band. wmm ^fpym^ mn S. J. DAVIS, THE ^PEOPLE'S BUILDER I 424 Bank Street - - HOMES FOR ALL. McLEAN, Reeve of Hintonbnrgh. The subject of this sketch, Donald HectorMcLecan, B.A., is the son of the late Hector McLean, merchant, he was l)orn in ISO."), educated in the Public Schools Ottawa, and at Woodstock (Ont. ) College and University College, Toronto, giaduated with honors in Modern Languages in 1893 ; stud- ied law ; called to the Bar in 1893, and is now practising his profession successfully, and has offices in Central Chambers, Elgin Street, Ottawa. On seeking nninicipal honor. ,vas elected Reeve in 1897, re-elected in 1898 and in 1899 by ac- clamation, a Liberal in politics. Mr. McLean has seen con- sidei-able c,f th(3 world. In the sunuiiei' of 1890 he crossed the Atlantic, working before the mast over and back and when on the other side tramped and bicyled over cons der- able parts of England, Scotland and France for over tai'ee months : again in the summer and fall of 1894, he was in the Old Land wheeling — this time in France, Switzerland and Northern Italy. His notes of his experiences and adventures on both trips would, if committed to paper Ix^ very entertaining as those of a young Canadian's impres- sions of old world life, and it is to be hoped that som« day they will be. Mr. McLean has been an ardent militiaman for some years -first joining as a private in K Company "Queen's Own," when at the l^niversity. He was given a lieutenants commission on the organization of the 48th Highlanders, and on coining to Ottawa again, in 1893, he transferriHl to The Governor General's Foot (xuards, in which corps he is now a captain. 50 w THE VIIvIvAGE OF HINTONBURC^H. This thriving suburb of the City of Ottcawa lies on ihe bank of the Ottawa River immediately west of the city. The population last year (1898) was 2,850, an increase nf over 60 per cent, upon what it was at the time of incorporation in 1894. The village by reason of its peculiarly a* 't' ill *-,^ . :ou8 position enjoys all the advantages of city life without many of its drawbacks. Street cars, electric lighiing, a complete series of sidewalks and police protection, and by the end of 1899 the waterworks system, now under construction, will have been completed, a (airly satisfactory system for the time being, of drainage will be built at the same time. The new Public School is a commodious eight roomed building built in 1898, according to the most approved ideas, and the principal, Miss Tomkins, is well known throughout the City and County as an unusually successful educalion- alist. The Separate School is a well situated f<^'ur roomed brick building. There are three Protestant churches, Presbyterian Anglican, and Methodist. The Capuchin Monastery and garden with the French Church attached is a picturesque bit of Old Wold life. The English Roinan Catholic Church is in the Township of Nepean just outside the Village limits. The Municipal tax rate for all purposes for each of th'^ las< ivvu years has been ten mills. Tiie Public School late during the same period has been 5h mills on the average while the Assessment is not much over 70 : of the actual value. There are no other rates for local improvements or otherwise, the cost of all such improvements as sidewalk's etc., being met out of the general improvement fund. There is a large water power on the river fronf hitherto undeveloped, arrangements are now under way, however, by which it is calculated there will be 30,00U horse power or over, available for manufacturing purposes before the end of two years. The river bank immediately below the water powei is an ideal site for factories and so lies that the power thus developed can be utilized at practically no further cost. \ny inquiry for further information can be made by letter or personally to W. A. Mcison, Clerk of the Municipal- ity, at his office, Town Hall. ^i^M^^^MM^MHMHM^WMMMiMH^HiM^ asb Coupons ARE HERE TO STAY $3 S 00 i '" ^^^"^^ ^^^' ^^ V&i^ for every book you fill. The scenery all along the route traversed by the Elec- tric Road, till Queen's Park is reached, is one of bewildering beauty. The noble Ottawa river is skirted, the Deschenes lake and rapids are obseived, the pretty nestling Town of Aylmer is passed, you reach the well appointed Hot«l Victoria, almost on the borders of the Park, where you can get olt* and secure all possible modern conveniences. The views of the Park and Lake are particularly charming from the lawn and pizza of the Hotel. If you wish the cars wiU take you to the central part of the Park, where you can at once lay out your plans to enjoy yourself to your heart's content. There is always some sort of amusement provided on the grounds of the Park. The Chute which plunges into the water is a marvellous wonder, a treat no person should miss ; the patronage bestowed upon it by young and old every summer, creates a popularity for a trip to the Park amongst all classes. The Park is an extensive one, cover- ing some 100 acres, with a large lake frontage, and besides a good space cleared for sporting purposes, reaching suflB- ciently back from the water front to make one feel that he is — when in its well wooded dells — quite out in the bush. The car service is perfect, rapid and frictionless, and no unnecessary delays occur, the officials are courteous and the whole arrangement is an embodiment of smoothness which it is a pleasure to enjoy.
