The Stmndudi for foienl qnality as defined by the Act for each of the grades of timothy, red clover, alfalfa and alsike may not be made permanent during the first few years of the operation of the amended Act of 1911. They are deter- mined in the month of November, or as soon as the seed crop for the year is available in bulk quantities, when composite standard samples ai« prepared in bulk to represent the minimum quality for each grade of each of the four kinds of seeds. The grading of samples in the seed laboratories is done by carefully comparing them with the standard samples. Standard samplea are available 'o seed merchants who operate seed cleaning plants. 12. Presh cloyer seed should be well coloured, bright and contain no dark brown shrunken, dull seeds. The seed of Turkestan alfalfa alone is of a dull mealv appearance. An excess of brightness together with the presence of a large per cent of bright brown seeds is sometimes a sign of artificial polishing to give old seed a better appearance. 17. If grain or other seed will germinate, only 60%, nearly double the ordinary quantity should be sown per acre; if 75% sow one-half more than u«uaL Orain that will germinate less than 60%, when placed in good soil in a flower pot or box and kept moist but not wet in a sunny window at about living room temperature for two weeks, should not be used for seeding. 88. To dean fran and elorer leeda. Any good fsnning mill, in which thorough control over tlie air current ia obtained and a series of four or more riddles and sieves may be adjusted at will, may be fitted and operated to do good work. It is most important to have a full equipment of both wire and perforated tine riddles and screens of all sizes made for small seeds. The want of any one of these may entail a waste of good *eeA or other lots many times greater than the total cost of the full equipment of screens. Before fitting the mill for cleaning, trials by hand should be made with the screens arranged in series, one over the other, to determine what screens should be used to produce the best possible results with the least poetibla waste of good seed. It will very often be found practicable and profitable to the farmer to make two grades in preparing his grass or clover seed for market. If, however, the seed has been taken from a weed infested field, it is usually to the ailvantage of the producer to sell it in an uncleaned condition to a wholesale merchant who can clean it with special power cleaners. 88. Sixes of loreeiu. For grass and clover seeds the following tixea of screens are mployed : Wire cloth (sizes given are the number of wires to the inch each way) 32 x33, 30x30. 28x28,26x26, 24x24, 22x22, S0x20, 4x80, 4zS8, 4x26 4x24, 4x22, 4x20, 3x18, 3x16 and 3x14. Perforated zinc (sizes given are the diameter of the perforation in paria of an inch) 1/15, 1/16, 1/18, 1/20, 1/22 and 1/86. Sbptbmber, 1912.
