Tlie Chaudiero is one of the gn^atest water falls on the continent, and worthy of special admiration by a practical generation for its usefulness as well as heauty. Its magnificent falls and r.,arinK cascades do more 'than make a nui»e. Its edges ou e.uh side uro lined wiih many splendid lumber mills and otlier manufact.iries, whoso wheels are turned— as well as the machinery that generates electric power for Ottawa city's lighting and street railway— by the vast volunu'S of rushing waters that ceaselessly thunder over and into the rocky basin. The bridge which pans the Ottawa river to connect the city with the town of Hull, and also to maintain commuui cation between the Provinces of Quebec and Ontario, is so close to the Falls that th^ir spray is blown into the faces of passengers. It is here that the poorer section or the inhaUitauts live, niakinj; their homes in the oM fashioned l.uilding8 which, with their ancient windows and weatherheaten walls, close in the narrow .streets tiirniiiK and twisting with old world eccentricity. It is the sti-eet soeneVy like the hit shown in the ensravinu' which, in spite of such innovations as the electric light in the picture and the elevator near by which now takes the place of the break neck stairs to the hill fop, gives to Quetiec tlie flavor of niediievalisni which makes it unique in this continent of newborn cities. •/".'♦•i'^'a' ■ .'-'-'.. ■ 'ill i'^ i '■ i -^ 4 ■': -i ' ^^^^^ft'/ii rft . :i: - ~ i ~ ^^^^^Mf Fc^LI ' — - :, ;/■ > W^'^.if 1 J ; ^ 1 ? .
