Dear Doctor, — I have had forwarded to me by a highly respected physician, residing in one of the towns in the Buhurst and Rideau Division, a circular issued by Dr. Oanston during the election of 1880 in this Division. I insert a copy, and it makes very interesting reading at the present lime, when the Doctor is endeavoring to remain our Representative in the Council for fivs years longer. Therein you will notice he emphatically declares no one should hold this position longer than one term, or five years, whereas he has already occupied it two terms, or nine years, and seeks to be allowed tiie honour for foutleen years continuously. " Dear Sik, — " By this time you will have, seen that Dr. Mostyn is also a candidate for the representation of the Rideau and Baihurst Division on the Medical Council. " The position, which is an honourable and highly impor- tant one, should be held sticcessively by the members of the Divi- sion, except in cases where potent reasons to the contrary can be urged. " Now, whilst I have not the slightest desire to under- value Dr. Mostyn's qualifications, I hold there are dozens in the Division equally able and qualified to represent us in the Medical Council, who should enjoy that privilege as soon as circumstances may permit. Holding this opinion, in which I feel certain you concur, I am not backward in stating that the Doctor is showins; a selfish avd avaricious disposition in asking the position a SECOND TIME, until the other qualified members who may desfW it have their turn. If the office is to be monopoKzed from term to temt by one or two, then there is an end to any laudable rivalry to develop the essen- tial qualifications for filling such a position. "On these grounds, on which I trust you hold similar viev/s, my claims to the support of my confreres are stronger and better founded than those of my opponent * * " I am, yours very truly, "J. G. CRANSTON. " P.S. — Please let me hear from you at as early a date as possible. "Arpprior, 11th May, 1880." I ask in all justice and fair play should Dr. Cranston have been a candidate in this election ? He made the limit himself when he first sought the position, he has been allowed to remain in oftice not om but two te\ms, or nine years, and now he is moving heaven and earth almost to be elected again, and if the late Dr. Mostyn showed "a selfish and avaririous disposition " when he asked for the positon a second term, pray how shall we cliaracterize Dr. Cranston's disposition in thus seeking it for a third term? In view of the ex()osure this circular makes, if Dr. Cranston has the slightest particle ot honour and self esteem he will retire and \\q\. force an election on the Division at the present time. If he does not, can any member in the Division consistently vote for him ? I seek your support for the reasons already given, and I shall be very much pleased to hear from you in connection with this election at as early a date as you conveniently can In case Dr. Cranston does not retire I shall answer his last circular fully, and while the reply must necessarily be lengthy, I trust you will patiently bear with me and read it carefully. I am, yours very truly, A. F. ROGERS, M.D.
