WITTEMANN, Publisher of American Views ?50 Adams St., Brooklyn, N. Y. The Albertype Co. Brooklyn, N.Y. y-) ^ c I C \ 1 -^"^ TORONTO was founded by Governor Simcoe in 1704 and was given the name of York, by by which title it was known until its incor])oration as a city in ]So4, when it received the Iroquois name it now bears as a capital city of the Province of Ontario. At that date its population numbered less than ten thousand, but the energy and public spirit of her people fostered a phenomenal growth, and the present population is estimated at 17"),< CO. Beautifully situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario, surrounded witli lovely natural scenery, ornamented with charming public parks, with broad shady streets, elegant substantia] buildings, important educational in.stitutions, and hundreds of houses of worship, Toronto is nxore than ordinarily attractive and may duly lay claim to the title of "The Queen City of Canada." The climate, tempered by the breezes of Lake Ontario is salubrious and delightful, and renders 'I'oronto an excellent resort in summer. The bay is protected by the island from heavy currents and has become a great meeting place for all kinds of acjuatic sports. Many steamers and ferryboats ply between the city and the parks and groves in the vicinity, notalily Hanlon's Point, the people's resort. Lome Park is about fourteen miles west of the city, a delightfid piece of woodland. Steamers make frequent trips to it, as also to Lony Branch, Victoria Park, and the Humber River. High Park lies at the western terminus of the Queen Street car line, while Queen's Park, Horticultural Gardens and other breathing spots are found in the heart of the city. As recently as ten years ago Toronto was far more distinguished as a literary and educational centre than for manufactures. Upon the adoption by the Catuidian Government of a policy of protection in 187S. an era of indjiistrial activity set in. which made Toronto an important seat of manufacture. Her shrewd merchants and capiialisls had before this tapped the more recently settled and growing regions northeast and northwest of the citv by narrow gauge railways, which have largely added to the trade, and, together with the trunk lines, have made Toronto one of the great railway centres of the continent. Architecturally the city presents a pleasing contrast when compared to American cities of similar size, and notably in her university and college buildings, also the newly completed Parliament Buildings the visitor will find much to admire.
