My most earnest wish is, that it may be useful ; if in the publication of this Illustrated Catalogue of Canadian Coins, my wish be realized, I shall be amply repaid for all my labors. Others, before me, have undertaken the difficult task of describing our Canadian coins, and good descriptions have certainly been given of nearly all the pieces. The un sou collection, however, has hitherto been a stumbling-block to both desoriber and collector. Different parte of the coin have been minutely delineated ; but those minutis far from enlightening the subject, and helping thr collector, have only served to make the classification of the pieces more difficult. For collectors especially, and for the student in general, the description of a coin should be neither too minute nor on the other hand too laconical. In the first edition of my "Catalogue of Canadian Goi::-/' J have perhaps fallen into the latter defect, shortness. In this edition, l' hope to have obtained the desideratum by accompanying each desonijtion with an illustration of the piece described. This is done for all the Canadian coins I know of, and more especially for the " tm aou collection." In order to obtain good impressions of all the pieces I had to seek the aid and counsel of others. This succor was refused me by certain Montreal collectors, by luckily I had most of the coins though not in so good a state of preservation as those contained in the cabinets of those kind friends. The pieces not in my possession were obtained from other favorably disposed persons. I take this opportunity to return special thanks to the Bevd. Abbe Verreau, Principal of the Jacques-Cartier Normal School, and likewise to Thos. Wilson, Esq., of Clarence, Ont., lor the kiudness tendered me. WtOVINCIAL UMARY VICTORIA. B. C 196962 ▼I PBEFAOI. To confer an idea of the value and rarity of the different pieces, 1 1 have adopted the foUoi^ing numbers. 1 common. 2 easily obtained. 3 not easily obtained. 4 obtained with difficulty. 5 rare. 6 very rare. 7 extremely rare. 8 precious. 9 very precious. 10 extremely so ; even unique. The value of 1, 1 cent ; that of 10, from |200 to |250. I have the intention of publishing an Illustrated Supplement, of the pieces that may have been omitted in this edition. Those having in their possession any Canadian coin not illuetrated in this Atlas, will greatly oblige by sending the coin itself for inspection, or in its stead, a good rubbing, so that it may be published in the Supplement. Persons buying the present edition and wishing to obtain the Supplement free, will kiidly send me their address. The remarks prefixed to this edition have been written in French and in English, as I hope thus to be understood b}' i greater number of readers, and thereby to be more useful. Another desire is that this Atlas, facilitating the study of our Canadian coins, will also develop a taste, in our young generation, for collecting those interesting pieces. For this reason I shall always be happy to give information to those desiring it. I have the honor to be, , Tours very truly etc, Jos.
