 I. 
 
 This Association shall be known as the Halifax Club. 
 
 II. 
 
 'I'he Halifax Club siiall consist of not more than two 
 hundred members, exclusive of honorary, supernumerary 
 and ])rivih!<:c.(l members. 
 
 III. 
 
 Politics and reli<rious questions of every description shall 
 b(! excluded from the objects of the Club.

 I\ 
 
 Each cundi<late for admission shall be proposed by one 
 member, and seconded by another, and the candidate's name 
 and usual phu-e of residence, his rank, profession, or other 
 <lescri})tion: iind also the name of the proposer and seconder 
 shall be inserted at the time ot the proposal in the book of 
 Candidates. 
 
 V. 
 
 The ballot for members shall take place on the first 
 "Wednesday in each month, to commence at thi'vc and to

 exclude. A paper dated and signed by the Secretary,

 put up in one of the public rooms of the Club, at least a

 VI. 
 
 On the admission of each new member, the Secretary shall 
 notify the same to him, and furnish him with a printed copy 
 of the rules. He shall also reqiu'st him to remit the amount 
 of his entrance fee and subscription to the Treasurer. 
 
 VII. 
 
 No member shall be a<lmitted to ballot for a candidate, or 
 vote on any occasion whatever, or to enjoy any of tlu' privi- 
 leges of the Club, imtil he shall have paid his admission fee 
 and subscription. 
 
 VIII. 
 
 The entr.ance money, payable on admission to the Club, 
 shall be Twenty Pounds, and the annual subscription Five 
 Pounds. All sul>scriptions shall be payabli' on the first day 
 of January, in each year, after which day no notice of with- 
 drawal shall exempt the retiring member from the payment of 
 the current year's subscription. 
 
 IX. 
 
 Should a new mendier not pay his admission fee and first 
 year's subscription within three months from his admission 
 into the Club, if in America, or within twelve months if 
 abroad, the Secretary shall report the circumstance to the 
 Committee who shall cause his name to be erased from the

 day of February ; and if the subscription be not paid on or 
 before the 31st of March, ensuin<r, the defaulter shall cease to 
 be a member of the Club, and his name shall be erased by 
 the Committee from the books. 
 
 XII. 
 
 Any member leavino- the Province, may, on written a])pli- 
 <*ation to the Committee, become a " Supernninerary Mem- 
 ber," and, durinjj; his absence, be exempt from the amiual 
 snbscription. lie shall be liable, however, to the payment 
 of his animal subscription for the year in which he dejiarts 
 from the Province, siud for that in which he returns to it. 
 and shall be immediately admitted to all the privileges of the 
 Club, on his a<!quainting the Committee with his return. 
 
 XIII. 
 
 Officers in Her Majesty's Army and Navy, and persons 
 holdin<j: Civil and Military appointments under the Imperial 
 Government, who may be stationed in Nova S(!Otia for an 
 indefinite period, and any other persons who shall satisfy the

 noli<'e be given to the Committee one week previous to the 
 •lay on which ho is proposed, and until the cause of the pri- 
 vilege has been sanctioned at a subsequent meeting of the 
 Counnitteo.

 The Committee shall have the power to admit as •'Ilonor- 
 ai'V Members." the Lieutenant Governor of the Province, 
 the General <'omnian<ling the Troops in this garrison, and the

 XVI. 
 
 There shall be five Trustees, in whom the property of the 
 Club shall be vested, and who shall be ex offiru, members of 
 the Committee. The Trustees shall remain in office until 
 death or resignation, or until a General Meetinjr shall think 
 proper to remove any of them, and vaeaneies shall be filled 
 up .it the General Meeting. 
 
 XVIT. 
 
 The general concerns of the Chib shall be managed by a 
 Committee of fifteen members, in addition to the five Trus- 
 tees. The Committee shall be elected by ballot, of wliom 
 one-third shall go out annually by rotation, the vacancies to 
 be filled up at the General Meeting ; but the five retiring 
 members may be re-elected. Whenever there are three 
 vacancies in the Committee in the current year, notice shall 
 be posted in the Club, and such vacancies shall be filled up 
 by ballot on the day for the election of mem])ers next aftei- 
 fourteen days from such notice. 
 
 XVIII. 
 
 The Conunittee shall make from time to time such Kegu- 
 lations (consistent with these general IJules) as they shall 
 think necessary for the well being of the Club. The Com- 
 mittee shall, at its first meeting after each annual election, 
 appoint from its own body as many Snb-Conimittecs as may 
 be required to superiTitend the several d^^partmellts of the 
 Club.

 Whenever forty members shall have signed a requisition, 
 desiring the expulsion of a member, on the plea of miscon- 
 duct, or being otherwise untit to be a member of the Club, 
 the CnumitttH' may, on receipt of the requisition, (provided 
 such requisition state the specilic grounds of objection to 
 such uuuuber,) transmit a notice of the receipt of such re- 
 quisition, to the member complained against ; aud if such 
 member shall not explain his conduct to the satisfaction of 
 the Committee, and if the grounds in the requisition shall 
 expel the uu'mber so objected to, such exjadsion to be the 
 act of the Committee, at which, howcvi'r. not less than eight 
 members shall b»' ])ri'seiU. and ii majority of two-thirds con- 
 cur therein, their decision to be biuding on all parties, aud 
 not afterwards to be impugned. In the event of there not

 Any nioniber whose dues are all paid shall be at liberty to 
 withdraw from the Club on his written application to that 
 effect, sent in to the Committee.

 Any member who shall withdraw, resign, or be expelled, 
 shall cense to be a member of the Club, and shall forfeit, 
 il>sofavto, all right or claim thereon, or in, or to its property 
 or funds, and any member who shall be expelled shall for 
 ever thereafter be ineligible to be re-admitted a member of 
 the Club. 
 
 XXIV. 
 
 There shall be an Annual Meeting of the Club, held on 
 the first Wednesday in April, for the purpose of electing the 
 Committee for the succeeding year, and receiving from the 
 Committee a report, and abstract of the state of the accounts 
 and general concerns of the Club, for the past year, together 
 with an estimate of the receipts and disbursements for the 
 current year, and also for the purpose of deciding on any 
 proposition which may be properly submitted to such 
 meeting. The chair shall be taken at all Annual Meetin<»-8 
 at 2 o'clock, P. M. The annual Report and Estimate shall 
 he printed for the use of the members, and hung up in the 
 public rooms of the Club at least fourteen days before the 
 General' Meeting. At least fourteen days' notice of any 
 proposition which is intended to be submitted to the General 
 Meeting, shall be hung up in the Club.

 No new rule, or alteration of a general rule, shall be

 thirds of th*' members present at a General Meeting, and 
 forty members at least voting on the occasion, and three

 XXVII. 
 
 The Club shall be oj)en every day for the reception of 
 members, at seven o'clock in the forenoon in the summer, 
 and at eight o'clock in the forenoon in the winter, and shall 
 be closed an<l the lights extinguished at one o'clock, 1*. M.. 
 except on Saturdays, when the house shall be closed at 
 eleven o'«'lo<'k. and no member shall be admitted into the 
 Club House after these hours on any preteiu-e Avhatever, 
 mdess specially authorize<l by the Committee. 
 
 XXVIII.

 Conunittee; the dinner to be charged at rates to be regidated

 resi*ling within the limits of the County of Halifax, shall be 
 tdigible to be introduced as sti-angers, or the guests of mem- 
 bers. 
 
 XXIX. 
 
 All members are to pay their bills for every (expense they 
 incur in the Club before they leave the house, the servants 
 having positive orders not to open accounts with any indivi- 
 dual. 
 
 XXX. 
 
 No member shall give any money or gratuity to any of 
 the servants of the establishment, or permit any stranger to 
 do so. 
 
 XXXI. 
 
 No provisions cooked in the Club House, or wines or 
 other liquors, are to be sent out of the house, on any pre- 
 tence whatever. 
 
 XXXII. 
 
 No member shall take or permit to be taken from tiie 
 Club, on any preteiu'e whatever, or shall injure ov destroy 
 any newspaper, pamphlet, or other arti(de, the property of 
 the Club. 
 
 XXXIII. 
 
 Any defect in a breakfast or «linner bill, complained of on 
 the back of the bill, and signed by thi« member so complain-

 Each member of the Club shall jrive his address, or that

 No member is on any account to brinj; a dog into the Club 
 House. 
 
 XXXVI. 
 
 These Ruh^s and Regulations shall be printed, and a copy 
 of them, together with a list of the Committee, shall be de- 
 li verexl to every member of the Club, or transmitted to his 
 address, and shall thenceforth become binding upon every 
 member of the C'lub ; but no member shall be absolved from 
 the effect of these rules on any allegation of not having re- 
 ceived them.
