 g,„ _Xhe prei)aration known as Beef, Iron and Wine is not defined in either the 
 British or the United States Pharmacopoias, nor does it occur in the Canadian Formu- 
 lary. The United States National Formulary of unofficial preparations contains the 
 following definition : — 
 
 U-5. Vinum Carnis el Ferri. Wiiie of Bei-f and Iron. Beef, Wine and Iron. 
 
 Extract of Beef, thirty-five grammes. ;'>"> Rrm. 
 
 Tincture of Citro-Chloride of Iron, 35 c.c 3r) c.c. 
 
 Hot water, sixty cubic centimetio^ .' 60 c.c. 
 
 Sherry Wine, a sufficient quantity to make one thousand 
 
 cubic centimetres 1,000 c.c. 
 
 Pour the hot water upon the Extract of Beef contained in a mortar or 
 other suitable vessel, and triturate until a smooth mixture results. 
 Then gradually aild, while stirring, eight hundred (800) cubic centi- 
 metres of Sherry Wine. Next add the tincture and enough Sherry 
 Wine to make one thousand (1,000) cubic centimetres. Transfer the 
 mixture to a bottle, set this aside for a few days in a cold place, if 
 convenient, filter, and pass enough Sheriy Wine through the filter 
 to restore the original value. 
 
 Each fluid drachm represents 2 grains of Extract of Beef, and 2 nunims 
 of Tincture of Citro-Chloride of Iron. 
 
 The Tincture of Citro Chloride of Iron, named in the alxjve formula, is itself an 
 unofficial tincture, practically identical in content of iron with the official Tinctura 
 Ferri Chloridi, U.S.P., which is somewhat weaker in iron than the Tinctura Ferri Per- 
 chloridi of the B.P. (Iron ratio : U.S.P., 4-7 ; B.P., 5-6. , „ , „„ 
 
 The iron content of Vinum Carnis et Ferri would therefore be 01 88 per cent, 
 expressed as Ferric Oxide.
