The copy filmed here has been reproduced thanks
 to the generosity of:

 Entomology Reiearch Library
 Agriculture Canada

The images appearing here are the best quality
possible considering the condition and legibility
of the original copy and in keeping with the
 filming contract specifications.

Original copies in printed paper covers are filmed
bi^ginning with the front cover and ending on
the last page with a printed or illustrated impres-
sion, or the back cover when appropriate. All
other original copies are filmed beginning on the
first page with a printed or illustrated impres-
sion, and ending on the last page with a printed
 or illustrated impression.

The last recorded frame on each microfiche
shall contain the symbol -^ (meaning "CON-
TINUED"), or the symbol V (meaning "END"),
 whichever applies.

Maps, plates, charts, etc., may be filmed at
different reduction ratios. Those too large to be
entirely included in one exposure are filmed
beginning in the upper left han^ corner, left to
right and top to bottom, as many frames as
required. The following diagrams illustrate the
 method:

 L'exemplaire film6 fut reproduit grdce A la
 g6n6rosit6 de:

 Bibliothique de recherche entomologique
 Agriculture Canada

 d'images ndcessaire. Les diagrammes suivants

(^ ^. . ("losely related to V. crerta "Walk., but differs in the face being
quite yellow, with yellow pile, and the dorsum of thorax and pleurae be-
 ing covered with black pile.

Face yellow, yellow pilose, cheeks Idack, shining, bvre. Antennic :
first two joints brownish-black, third joint red, or reddish-brown, arista
darker, black plumose Front in female j'ellow, darker at the vertex,
yellow i)ilose ; frontal triangle {r^) black, or brown with shorter yellow
pile, vertex with tuft of long yellow pile. Tiionix black, shining, the dor-
sum broadly black pilose, in front and behind and on the sides with
longer yellow pile, pleura^ with black pile. Abdomen black, shining,
second segment except the middh^ third or half, and narrow i)osterior
border, light yellow, the narrow jxisterior part of third, the fourth and
fifth segments- conspicuously red pilose, other parts of abdouK-n with
shorter black pile. Legs black, black pilose, basal portion of tibije and
all the tarsi dark red. Wings hyaline, the veins with brown clouds, a
brown spot opposite the small cross-vein. Long. corp. 1-1-15 mm. Thiv.e
 specimens. California.

The posterior part of the abdomen in V. crerta is usually black pilose
without any trace of the red, but rarely in some specimims the abdomen
is markinl precisely like fdrialls, and hence it is quite probable that
s lecimens of the California species may sometimes lack the rufous pile.
The black pile of the thorax will at once distinguish the species or
variety if it should prove to be such, as in a large number of specimens of
eceetib I have never found any with such thoracic pile. However, as
regards its specific distinction, see Eristnlis flavipes mcbinastoninH Lw.

predominating in America, is readily delined, .showing comjiaraf'.ely lit-

The third joint of the antenna' is sub-(iuadrate, tlius .'it (uicc; distinguishing
it from ViiliicfUit i\ut\ T,iiiiinrn',i. The fu'e is never produced, in nearlv
iill of the species with a not very prominent tubercle, Avitii a median stripe
and che(!ks black, bare, and shining. From Milixi<i and Pkn>i>iU<i it mav
readily be distinguished by the absence of distinct y(dlow >pots or stripes
on the dorsum of the tliorax, which is, however, sometimes distinctly fas-
ciate or viltate with dull gray or olivaceous ; from the latter genus also by
the absence of pubescence on the wing, rhough, indeed, this rhar;icter is
only relalive. There is a tendency to dill ■fences of coloration and mark-

to doubt their relationslii).. l^neh diflerences may consist in tlu; ab-
