CONSTITUTION. -O- Art I. The Society shall be called the "Society Name, for Historical Studies". Art 2. The objects of the Society shall be the Objects, investigation of Canadian history and the public ation of works connected therewith. Art 3. The Society shall consist of resident, ghip'^^''' corresponding, honorary and life members. Art 4. Resident and corresponding members ^^^^f^^^^^^^ ^l shall be proposed in writing by a member and ^"J^^^^^J;. having been nominated by the Council, shall be elected by ballot at any stated meeting by a ma- jority of the votes cast. Art 5. Honorary members shall be elected by Hon*^"/", an unaminous vote of the Council. Election ot m. Art 6. Every person elected a member of the Conditions J t' of member- Society shall become such by signifying his accept- ship. ance to the Secretary, in writing ; and any member Libraries may withdraw from it at any time, by certifying his intention of so doing to the Secretary, in writ- ing and paying all dues to the Treasurer. Art 7. Libraries and other institutions may hold membership and be represented by an author- ised agent. Ladies. Art 8. Ladies are eligible for membership. Annual foo. Art 9. Art 13. The affairs of the Society shall be managed by a Council consisting, of the officers and two resident members. Meetings. Art 1 4. The Society shall meet in the City of Montreal for the transaction of business, on the first Wednesday of every month, except the months of July and August and except when such Wednes- day is a legal holiday, and at such other times as the Society or the council shall appoint. Resident and life members only shall be entitled to vote. Art 15. No alteration shall be made in this Ameud- constitution except at a January meeting of the Society, at the written recommendation of at least live members then presented, and by a vote of three fourths of the members present and voting ; notice of the proposed alteration having been entered on the minutes at least one month pre- vious to time of voting. It shall be the duty of the President to call the Council together, whenever it may Ije ne- cessary tor the transaction of business and to pre- side at its meetings and at the meetings of the Society. No. 2. It shall be the duty of the Vice President to act in the absence of the President and he shall be the curator of the Society. No. 3. The Secretary-Treasurer in his capacity of Secretary shall take correct minutes of the pro- ceedings of the Society ; preserve all documents belonging thereto ; notify all members of tht;ir elec- tion as Avell as all committees of their appointment and keep a correct list of the members of the So- ciety, and as Treasurer he shall receive and take charge of the funds of the Society, and attend to the collection and payment of moneys ; but no payment shall be made unless authorised by the Council. He shall present a statement of all receipts and expenditures at the annual meeting in January. No. 4. It shall be the duty of the Council to superintend and conduct the prudential and ex- ecutive business of the Society ; to authorise all expenditures of money ; to receive and act upon all resignations and forfeitures of membership ; and to see that the constitution and by laws are duly complied with. No. K. The order of i^roceedings at monthly Order of ^ 1 & / proceedings meetings of the Society shall be as follows : — 1. Reading of minutes. 2. Election of members. 3. Discussion of previous papers. 4. Reading of papers and essays. 5. Reports. 6. Transaction of unfinished and other business. The meetings of the Society shall be held at 8 p.m. No. 6. It being one of the objects of the Society Library, to procure access to books treating ot Canadian subjects, for the information of members of the Society ; each member shall furnish the Secretary- Treasurer, with a list of such books, in his or her possession and members desiring to consult the same, at any time, shall have the right to do so on the recommendation of the Curator, who shall apply to the owner and have the book placed in the Fraser Institute, for a period of <^en days, where it may be consulted, but «• ch books shall under no circumstances be removed from the Institute, ■wHBBHk.
