A delegation from the Eastern Association present, approved of the proceeding and bespoke the concurrence of the Eastern churches. A fortnight later the Eastern Association in conven- tion at Onslow, adopted the Constitution. The Western Association having held its annual session ju'st previous to the meeting of the Central, the subject cannot now ho presented for its considemtion until the ensuing session of 18ob. So desirable, however, is it, that the organization already effected, should be brought into active operation— nothin"- doubt- ing that the Western Association will unite in hearty co-opem- tion,~the Board decided to proceed to business, and at an crtrly meeting it was resolved to print and publish the Constitution, and circulate it extensively, accompanied with the forecroinff remarks and the following appeal. " / (6) APPEAL To the Baptist Churches in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Uln„.t Dkak Bbetiirev and Frieni)3,— Ilolying upon your co-oporation-your prayers-your sympa- tlnes-your contributions, wo have engaged in this Homo Mis- Bionary entcrprizo. :' f t-^™!;* great things-expect great things." We remember .'onEJ^orr '' '"'' --onavy-and wo desire that nono Nova Scotia and Prince Edward's Island afford a vast field for ja.^ionury operation. IT^eir entire population is at present, pro- bably httle short of four hundred thousand souls. In less than ten years It may reasonably bo expected that this population wiU exceed half a million. What a field for labour • '^"'^» ^^" In order to "possess this land," what we Baptists for a long tim<' mvo seemed to require, was such an organization as would com- l>.no the sympathies and efforts of the entire denomination, and v.'ould deserve and command their confidence. An organization nossossmg concentration, discretion and wisdom at the centre - real, tone, responsibility and vigour, at the circumference- um-in, iiarmony, and charity throughout. All wo can do is to sketch the land«cape-it is for you Brethren and fnonds, by your good works, sanctified through the Grace of -nn. Lord Je«us CI,rist, to fill up the picture,-to make the desert blossom as the rose. (iivo us now your eonfidonco-do more-give us of vour sub- "w; f;";'^°«f ."^' Slvo statedly, give promptly. ' Without inis wo can do nothing. \ V ird Island, to all u'ho ir sympa- tomo Mis- pomembcr that nono t field for iont, pro- less than -tion will ong tima uld com- on, and nization ontre, — rence, — brethren 3irace of le desert ur sub- Vithout Qualification for membership htvs been fixed low— very low, just in order that the greatest po88il)lo number of persons, may enjoy the satisfaction, the luxury of systematically aiding to carry the Word of life to those places that have long sat in dark- noes. A dollar a year— only five ponce a month, but little over u penny a week. Who so straitened among us, that feels for the condition of their fellow men unregenerato, but will cheerfully assume the responsibility of such a membership, promptly dis- charging its duties ? Then, whenever it can be conveniently done— pay in advance. There is thus more pleasure to the giver—there is more advantage to the Society. Again then wo say— and wo ask it in His name, who has guaranteed that, but " a cup of cold water given to a disciple, in the name of a disciple shall not lose its reward"— give us your names, brctlircn and sisters, and friends of Christ and of His cause, as members— and give us your 8u1>scription8 in advance. In the absence of any other agency wo for:vard you this appeal. Perhaps wo are taking too much liberty, wo hope not— but wo ask it of the pastors of our churches, we claim it from the deacons and office-bearers, we urge it upon all who lovo the souls of men, and Him that made them, that they circulate this our Constitution, these remarks and tins our appeal, that they thus take it upon themselves to act as our agents to obtain memberships, furnishing our secretary with a copy of all sub- scribcr's names, and remitting proceeds to our treasurer. The Constitution it will be observed is adapted to, and contem- plates the co-operation of Auxiliaries, and funds may to a lar- nomination were all more or less missionaries. It was missionary effort that planted most of our churches. The modern pastor however, is required constantly among his people,— and therefore we need a system by which weak churches may be aided and new ones planted. Fifty churches within the limits of our throe Associations are reported as being without pastors, some of these retuni a hun- dred members and upwards in their fellowship, and many of them are destitute of any regular stated preaching. «■« bo most ° uccSv rrT "J"" '"■" ''"°' ""O "i" i« of pos«o«;;gCu„l a J ™,r' f !""« °"" 8'""8 P"""' -onto of :iiTg:^ul: • ' ""^ ''"°""° "'» ''^""^ «*•■- often „,„I often t ' ri.>,I; "° «"''* '"''™ "f ""•» "»'-W. nearer to the CrosTofri^irn !
