 the best interests of the Univei-sity would not warrant my embarking in a newspaper controversy begun in so 
 uncharitable a s])irit. Moreover, jvs an officer of the Seiiate, I considered my proper course would l)e to luldress 
 myself on tlie first fitting occasion directly to that Ixidy. 
 
 This opportunity occurred at the meeting in (juestion, on the following motion moved by Mr. Houston' 
 seconded by Pif>fess()r Loudon, " That a special committee, consisting of Professor Galbraith, M. A. B. Ayles- 
 " worth, Dr. J. J. Maclaren, Dr. J. H. Cameron, and the mover, be appointed to inquire into and report on the 
 "conveyance of two lots on College Street to the Trustees of the projK)sed Park Hospital, as set forth in the 
 " l^ursar's report, laid l)efore the Senate at its meeting, held on the 20th April ult., and also to report whether 
 '• it is exi)e<lient to take any steps with a view to the restoration of the said lots to the control of the University." 
 
 At this stage T, by leave from the Senate, rejul and delivered to the Senate a written statement, a copy of 
 which is herewith enclosed. 
 
 The Rev. Dr. Burwash, Chancellor of Victoria University, then moved, .seconded by Rev. Father Teefy, 
 Superior of St. Michael's College, the following resolution : — 
 
 " That the Senate has iicard with great satisfaction the explanations made by Mr. Mulock, touching the 
 " estabiisiiment of the Park Hospital, and the addition to the Biological Laboratory, and desires to place on 
 " record its appreciation of iiis action in connection tiierewith, and its continued confidence in him as Vice Chan- 
 cellor of this University."

 I may here state that the reports of Senate meetings are prepared for the Press under the directions of a 
 eomniittee, which decides what shall and what shall not be pul.lished. Professor Loudon and Mr. Houston lieing 
 the members of the committee which had for some time prepai-ed the Press reports. Being desirous that a full 
 and fair rejwrt of the meeting in question should go to the Press, I attended at the Registrars office on the 
 following day wiien the report wius lieing prepared under the directions of these two gentlemen. 
 
 I was greatly surprised tlien to learn that they refused to incorporate my letter to tlie Senate in the re- 
 port for I lie Press, taking tiie gi-ound that technically it was not piu-t of the regular correspindence and there- 
 fore did not form part of the proceedings. ^^

 was only fair that my defence should now witliout delay go to the Press. In view of the action of the majority 
 of the Senate, I felt that it was only fair to those who hiwl supported Dr. Burwash's motion, that the statements 
 which I, in my communications had made to the Senate sliould he published, and T staterl that the Senat«» 
 would, I felt assured, approve of such publication. My appeal, liowever, was unsuccessful, both Professor Tj<iud(in 
 and Mr. Houston refusing to allow the Registrar to include my letter in the report. 
 
 T expressed n<y regret at thoir allowing their action as representatives of the Senate to l)e apparently biased 
 V)y private feeling, and added that in justice to myself and those members of the Senate who ha»l supported me 
 I should try to secure the publication of my letter. 
 
 In this at^'empt I was partially successful, two of our leadiiig journals with a full knowh'dge of the facts 
 having had the courtesy to publisii it along with the other prn?eediiigs of the nieeting. 
 
 Owing, however, to the partial nature of the publication, I learn that my letter has not reached all my 
 fellow graduates, and, therefore, in case you may not have already rei (1 it, I send herewith a copy. 
 
 Feeling that extreme or unworthy language in the discussion of University affairs cannot but injure the 
 University in the eyes of the public, I greatly dei>lore it that some of njy critics have, I venture to suggest., 
 failed to confine their observations within the limits of fair criticism. I trust, therefore, you will not disap- 
 prove of my having endeavoured to avoid a like ernjr. Perhaps had T yielded to personal demands of some of 
 my opponents some of those gentlemen would now be my strong supportei-s, but my duty towai'ds the University 
 was my first consideration. With no personal ends to .serve I have endeavoured to pfOmwie tuo interests of the 
 Uni'.'ersity us a whole, my anxietj for her welfare increasing with her expansion. But for this feeling I would 
 long since have withdrawn from a position that for years has occupied a large part of my thoughts and time, to 
 the great injury to my own personal aifairs. 
 
 Whilst laying no claim to infallibility I trust that my fellow-graduates will recognize in my work an unsel 
 fi.sh desire to promote the best interests of our Alma Mater,
