 the portages of the Temiscouta route, sheltered only by the heavens 
 and the primeval forest ; who added eight other children to her 
 family, trained them up in the fear of God, and litted to discharge

 In tlic city of Boston, in years long since gone l)y, there lived a 
 quaiutolilgcntleinan, wliose recollections reached back tothe Battle 
 of Bunker's Hill. Jlis sterling integrity, sound judgment, generous 
 hospitalitj', and anoverilowingsliareof thcniilkof iiuniaukinduea!', 
 caused him to berankedaniongtliecxcellcnt of theoartli. Fre(iuent 
 visits on business, to the city of the Puritans, brought nic, in c^rly 
 youth, in contact with this kind-hearted old unclo : he was the 
 husband of my mother's eldest sister. Like other old men, he had 
 many crotchets, ^''itli some i)f them I soon became familiar. From 
 him I tirst learned that every thing in America was the lient in tho 
 world ; that Democrats were unworthy of confidence ; that on 
 Fridays a fourp 'under eodtisli was the jjroper dish for dinne»-, with 
 the pudding served up first. He also informed me that my mother's 
 family were of gentle blood ; that her anceftors were English ; had 
 emigrated to Barbadoes, and thence flitted to Boston, Mherc many 
 of their uionuuients were standing and in good preservation ; that 
 several family portraits were in his possession, particularly one of 
 Sir John Alleyne, at one time Speaker of the House of Assembly 
 in Barbadoes. He had expended much pains in tracing out tlieir 
 descent, and had several genealogical table", which it would be wise 
 in nic, as my mothes's e'dcst son, to cojjy. Upon .such occasions I 
 felt that it would have been a miserable return for his uniform kind- 
 ness, not to have treated him to a ride upon his favourite hobby, 
 and htuce was derived the first portion of the Family Becords. My 
 venerable uncle having no children, had adopted a son of one of my 
 mother's sistcra, caLing him after his own name, Jeremiah J'mith 
 Boies ; and the regularity with which that name aj pears in all the 
 families of tho sisters that hiid thildnn — and they were not few — • 
 seems to indicate a latent hope that the worthy and we:dthy old 
 gentleman might be disposed fnither to increase hij family in a 
 similar way, to add to his own comfort and to share in the f i uits of 
 his youthful industry.

 I INTKODHTIOX. 
 
 In the year 182-I, I visited Dublin witli the intention of repairing 
 toEnniskillen, and the places in its vicinity, where resided numbers 
 of my father's relations. A severe attack of ilk iss prevented n\y 
 carrying out my project at that time, and another opportunity did 
 not occur during my sojonrn in England. 
 
 In Dublin I was visited by a brother of my father's, who spent 
 several days with mc. From him I derived much information 
 resijecting the difl'erent branches of his family. He was a tall, 
 handsome, elderly gentleman, strongly resembling my fatlier, and 
 with quite as exalted an opinion of my paternal ancestorsas myBoston 
 uncle entertained for the other side of tlie house. After my return 
 home, and the lapse of many years, a distant relative of my father's 
 settled in Canada. With him I com]iared the infoniation received 
 Miien in Dublin, and, from tlie dilTerent memoranda then in my 
 jjossession, with him constructed a genealogical tree. This tree has 
 since been revised by two other relations of my father's, who at 
 difl'erent times visiteil me at my residence at I'ine iirove, in the 
 township of Vaughan, andafTorded mc theunspeakablegratification 
 of having some of my father's kith and kin under the shelter of my 
 roof. 
 
 As years rolled on, tiie Families' History in my keeping became 
 a frcquentsubject of conversation, upon occasionsof family visiting ; 
 when, finding the desire to obtain a copy, general with the numerous 
 members of ourdifl'ereut brandies, I determined to have the Records 
 printed for distributionamong them, and which I nowprcsent, with 
 the sincere and hearty wisli for their happiness, here and hereafter.

 ISABELLA ELTZEBETH (GAMBLE, the third daughter 
 of Dr Joseph Clarke and Isabella Elizabeth Alleyne, was 
 liorn at Stratford, in Connecticut— then a colony of Great 
 P'.itain— on the 24th October, 1767. In the year 1776 
 her father, faithful to his allegiance, repaired to the 
 British Army in New York, to which place Ids family 
 followed him. At the peace of 1 783, Dr. Clarke removed 
 with his fiiniily to New Brunswick (then known as the 
 Province of Ac.idia) and took up his residence at Mau- 
 gm'ville. There his daughter — the subjectof thismemoir 
 — then in her 17th year, was married, on the 18th May, 
 1784, to Dr. Joliu Gamble, the eldest son of William 
 Gamble and Leah Tyrer of Dui'oss, near Enniskillen^ 
 Iielaiid. Mr. Gamble was born in 1 755 ; studied physic 
 and surgery atFidinburgl: : emigrated to theBritishColo- 
 nies in 177P, and landed in New York in September of 
 that year. Immediately on his arrival, he entered the 
 King's Service as Assistant Surgeon, General Hospital, 
 sul)se(]uently ho was attached to the " Old Queen's Han- 
 gers," and for some time did duty Avith that Regiment 
 as Surgeon. At the peace of 1783, he, with other Ameri- 
 can Loyalists, went to New Brunswick. After his raar- 
 liage, Dr. (iamble j)ractised his profession at St. John, 
 and resided in New Brunswick until 1793, when, having 
 been appointed Assistant Surgeon to the late Kegimeiit 
 of (t)uoen'sKangers by General Simcoe, then Lieutenant- 
 (Jovenior of Upper Canada, he joined his Keginient at 
 Niagara, where it was then quartered, having left hig 
 wife and five daughters with her father at Maugerville. 
 Mrs. Gamble continued to reside with her father until 
 1798, when lior husband having in the meantime (July, 
 179G: been promoted to the surgency of his Regiment, 
 she, with her five daughters, the eldest then but thirteen

 wards married to the Hon. Samuel Smith), ascended the 
 river St. John in a bark cano*;, crossed the portage by 
 Temiscouata to the Riviere du Loup, came up the St. 
 Lawrence, and joined Dr. Gamble, then with his Kegi- 
 ment in Garrison at York. In 1802, the (Queen's Ran- 
 gers were disbanded, and Mrs. Gamble accompanied her 
 liusband and family to Kingston, where he practised his 
 profession until his death, in the fifty-sixth year of his 
 age, on the 1 st September, 1811. She remained in King- 
 ston until the year 1820, when, with the portion of her 
 lamMy then at home, she removed to Toronto, and there 
 eoutiMued to reside, surrounded by her offspring, until 
 lier death, which took place on the 9tli March, 1859. 
 Mrs. Gamble had thirteen children, nine daughters and 
 four sons ; Isabella, the eldest, married to Robert Charles 
 Home, Esq.. Assistant-Surgeon Glengarry Light Infan- 
 try ; Mary Ann married to Colonel Sinclair, Royal Ar- 
 tillery ; Sarah Hannah Boies, to James Geddes, Es(j., 
 Assistant-Surgeon, Medical Staff; Leah Tyrer, to the 
 Hon. William Allan ; Catherine, who died unmarried ; 
 Jane, married to Benjamin Whitney, Esq. ; Rachel 
 Crookshank to Sir James Buchannan Macaulay ; Mag- 
 dalene, to Thomas William Bir.iudl, Esq. ; and Mary 
 Ann, unmarried ; John William, of Yaughan ; William 
 of Milton, Etobicoke ; Clarke, of Toronto ; and Joseph* 
 who died in infancy. Of these thirteen, seven only sur" 
 vivo ; but Mrs. Gamble's descendants have already 
 reached the large number of two hundred au-i four, and 
 some of her children's children's children j.ie now up- 
 wards of thii ty years of age. The remarkable longevity 
 of a large number of the American loyaljst emigrants, 
 who came to the British Provinces after the American 
 Revolution, has been noticed by the Lord Bishop of New 
 Brunswick, as a sti iking instance of the fulfilment of the
