The Grand Trunk Railway Company ask the Government's assistance in forcing the Canadian Pacific Railway to hand over all its Roi,ds and CoLnections in Ontario. ■'—' To JAMES BEATY, Q C, ROBERT HAY, and JOHN SMALL. Esquires. Members Roresenting Toronto in the Dominion House of Comroons : Gkntlemen,— '1 here is much ()ulcr>and talk about the supposed monopoly of the Canachau I'acific Railway in the North West, but the people of old Canada, and especially of Ontario, seem to hav; j^one to sleep so far as their own Provinces are concerned, and arc in danger of a rude awakei.ing when they find themselves under the -jrasp of the greatest and most grinding monopoly ever put upon A nation. ' | From the day that the Canadian Pacific Railway ceased to be a government work, t le Grand Trunk Railway authorities have been bitterly opposed to the undertaking. They reco^ni/xd the tact that those in control were business men, and would be likely to manage the property oi. busine.ss principles: that, in this view, the Canadian Pacific Railway would, as soon as po.ssible. make connections with tiie business centres of Ontario, as, without such connection.s, the road would lose half its value, being more or less at tiie mercy of the (irand Trunk Rail vay and of American connections, and destined in time to fall into the hands of the Gra.d Trunk Railway. Nor were they wrong in this surmise. One of thr first acts of the Canadian Pacific Railway under its present management was to look about for the best mean.s of securing their Ontario connections, and with this view they opened ncgotiafons with the G-cat Western Railway to build the C^ntario and Quebec, and so to join Toronto and Montreal with the Great Western system. At once the Grand Trunk Ritdway set about killing this project, with the result of the absorption of the Great Western Railway by the ^iiand 'IriiTrR^'TaiUvay. Tlie Grand Trunk Railway were much surprised to find that tlii> move Iiad not worked as they liad anticipated ; that there was yet •the Credit Valley Railway, and that the Ontario and Quebec was to be built even though the Greut Western Railway had been absorbed. They then tried to buy the Credit Valley R.iilway and the Ontario and Quebec. In this they failed. The\ iiave since been working" ni^ht and day to so discredit the C'anadian Paeitic Railway Imancially that it would not be abh- to carry out its undertakings. THii Grand Trunk iiavi-: always hkkn willing and a:u>: now willing, to make TKRMs wiiii I'liK Canadian Pacific Railway, the only condition being that the Canadian Ta'-hk Railway shall hand over The Ontario and Quebec and The Credit \"a!,i,i.v Rah.ways to tiilm, and for these lines thev are prepared ro pay a BI.. I'RICE. Whai. docs this mi:an for Canada as a whole, and for Ontario in particular ? Simply that all the business of Ontario and much of the business of the other Provinces, wouhl ■ be under t!ie absolute control of one Company and that Company the Grand Trunk Railway, a Company that ha&.,alatays been i;njssly mismanaged ; that has a capital representing many times the actual cost of the road ; a Company that unless it can devise some means ol increasing its earnings out of the people of Canada, must ere long make default on >crs are afraid to s[)eak out, for they j^et large patronage from the Grantl Trunk, while the Icadin., snerchants of tiiis place, and the shippers of the Province at large, dread to run the risk of Grand Trunk displeasure. Kor this reason the true statL- of the case has never been placed before the people of Canada, and consequently the)- have not perceived ;he dan"-er they arc \\\ of b/ing placed under a monopoly worse, ten times worse, than the much talked-of monopoly of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the North West. Trusting that >-ou will take every opportunity to prss these considerations upon other members of Parliament representing constituencies in Ontario, I am. gentlemen, Your obedent servant.
