V 880374 PREFACE. , The Primitive Metliodist rhurch is an original Coin- iiiunity, not foimdod in scliisni, nor in ocolcsiastical agita- tion. fts first Members were converted from the world : and on the establishment of hhiolish Camp :Meeting8 by Hugh liourne anti William ('lowes, tlie Ee-'val, by God's provi- dence, took the form of a distinct De...mination. This Body in Britain now takes rank amongst Methodist CoDinmnities next the Wesleyan in numerical strength, Missionary power, and success in tlie salvation of sinners. In 1830 a mission was formed in Torofito, which has been enlarged through a portion of Western Canada. In 1853 the English Conference made the Canadian sta- tions into a separate Conference, for the pur])ose of more effectually carrying on the work of (iod : but the .Knglish and Canadian conferences are still united. The Laws by which the ('onnexion is governed have been in use from the commencement in Canada ; but the Confer- ence of 1860 directed that a Book of Disciplink should be romp/fed, suited to the Church in this country. That Book of Discipline being now out of jirint ; and alterations and new Rules having been made during the hist eleven years, it was found neaessary to consolidate these various regulations, and embody them in a now publication of the Di.scipline. r I AM'HABETICAL INDEX.
